OL Kirk Barton (Don't tase me Bro!)

Is it more likely they want to hurt people or did he think he could just make it home?

They always think they can make it home. Yes, he made the biggest mistake of his life but he didn’t set out to kill someone. He set out to get home in his own car. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve blame but I am saying that no doubt Alcohol severely impacts your decision making. Blame it on the booze? It’s a shared blame. He shouldn’t have got hammer and driven at likely 100mph. However he wouldn’t have been going 100mph the wrong way without the booze.

He deserves his time and hopefully he accepts responsibility.

As for his kids being better off? Maybe but I doubt it. Hopefully Kirk can learn from this and help his kids learn this lesson when he gets out.
His excessive rate of speed through a town isn’t just “trying to get home.”

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

2026 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Great topic. Which comes first, the NIL or the recruit? Easy to understand, coming off a Natty, how tOSU is increasing their war chest. but am struggling to understand, how the under-performing USC does it. Certainly understand fanatics, but more of the fanbase are in a wait-and-see mode. Sooo, does USC promise a 4* LB, $2.2 mil over two years (?), and then ask folk to pony up NIL bucks? Or? Is the money there, saying 'we trust you to spend this to become competitive (and soon)'. Dunno, help me clear away the fog please. Happily, do not need to understand this side of the problem.

What kind of car do you drive?

Wish had seen this thread couple of years ago. Just got back from C'bus visiting daughter. Noticed her car was dingy, with lots of strange streaks. Well, turns out that when visited in Nov/Dec of couple of years, did the Daddy thing, and washed (soapy wand place), and then waxed in her garage. Also turns out that did a sub-standard job in the cold, and the wax built up and left residue when tried to rub off. Clearly a polisher would have helped. Anyway, a gearhead friend suggested one of those spray-on waxes (Meguires, or Griots). Did so, and rubbed all that built up wax and dirt right off. Apparently the spray-on wax emulsified the build-up/dirt, but left me with two very tired arms. Anyway, her car gleams now, and got a 'thanks Dad', so guess was all worth it...

You ask, we answer. Sometimes we ask, others answer. And then other times, we ask, we answer.

Throughout the year, we will be asking and answering questions about various
Ohio State teams, the players, and anything else on our collective minds of varying degrees of importance. If you have a question that you would like to ask, you can tweet us @LandGrant33, or if you need more than 280 characters, send an email HERE.

As we wrap up Biggest Concern Week, we are taking a look back at this week’s fan survey in which we asked Buckeye Nation to chime in on which position groups and games they were most concerned about heading into the season.

You can check out the results — and my thoughts about the results — down below, and if you have any thoughts about what you read, feel free to throw in your two cents in the comments at the bottom of the page.

Question 1: Which position group are you most concerned about heading into the season?

While this is anything but nice, I certainly understand where Buckeye Nation is coming from with this one. All four of OSU’s starting defensive linemen from last year’s national championship team are now in the NFL, and every other position on the team — save quarterback — has at least one guy who was a starter last year (even if it wasn’t with the Buckeyes in the case of C.J. Donaldson).

Replacing all of the talent and experience along the defensive front will be incredibly important for the Buckeyes, especially as they transition to Matt Patricia’s defense. This is the option that I would have gone with as well, so glad we are on the same wavelength, Buckeye fans.

Question 2: Which game are you most concerned about heading into the season?

If we are just talking about what game we think OSU has the best chance of losing, I might agree with the slim plurality here. However, since the Big Noon meeting with the Longhorns happens in August, I’m not terribly concerned. The Buckeyes have proven that losing early in the season (or even losing late) is not a disqualifying factor in earning a College Football Playoff berth.

So, while I obviously don’t want them to lose and will be concerned if they do, I would go with one of the top two Big Ten options as my pick. I think Penn State has a legitimate shot at being much improved this season, but they’ve still got the same albatross weighing them down that they have for the past decade, their head coach. So, until James Franklin proves that he can get his team up to expectations, I am less concerned than I otherwise would be.

And, of course, that means that all roads lead back to Michigan — as they often do for Buckeye fans. Ryan Day won the national title last season, so obviously that earned him an immense amount of goodwill and forgiveness for his four straight losses to his rival. Honestly, I was personally tired of having to write about whether Day could get out of his own way, whether or not he was maximizing his team’s potential, and if he should be fired or not, so I am genuinely ecstatic that we get to go into a season without that garbage hanging over our heads.

However, can you imagine the uproar around Columbus if the Buckeyes lose to TTUN for a fifth straight year? I don’t even want to think about it. Even if they go on to make the CFP again following another regular-season ending defeat, there will undoubtedly be a bunch of angry fans ready to pull their pitchforks out of storage and re-light their torches.

There is so much more to this game than just the win or loss; it is about pride, reputation, and legacy, and for nearly half a decade, Ohio State has been on the wrong side of that equation. So, until the Scarlet and Gray vanquish the victors valiant, I will remain inordinately concerned about The Game.

Throughout the year, we ask questions of the most plugged-in Ohio State fans and fans across the country.

Where was the last place you went on vacation?

Have a time share that counts Cancun as one location. Two different places, one, near Cancun, with all the tall hotel/resorts. Close to ferry that goes to Isla de Mujeres, which is fun/nice, and very turtley (turtle sanctuary). The other is down in the 'Cancun Riviera', which is very nice laid out resorts, all the way down to Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. Only been to one, but it had seven wonderful restaurants, all different themed, and this resort is laid out with the plan of keeping you and your dollars there. Very nice golf course (with clubs to rent better than what I play with). One tip, if you sign up for a 'sales pitch', make sure you design (and get in writing), what you get for your 90 minute sales pitch. One of the things I got was a free round of golf, plus free clubs, plus spa day for wife and daughter. The waters are warm and blue. We rented auto, and drove down to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and walked the streets. At Blue Lobster, one picks out their dinner, so had lobster instead of turkey for Thanksgiving. Anyway, don't think you can go wrong, but depends on what you're looking for. PS, booked a guide that took us zip-lining, swimming in a cenote, and had lunch in a tree house, and snorkeled in a river that had upper level sea water, and lower level freshwater, with different species of fish. It was all good. Final note: those people doing the sales pitches are very persistent at their jobs. Be strong, or have money to spare. We upgraded our timeshare, and came away thinking, 'now why did we do that'....

Alcohol is an inanimate object. It’s no more responsible for this than his car — if Kirk didn’t have a truck that could go 100 MPH, this wouldn’t have happened, so Ford shares some blame, too! Hell, if the road wasn’t there, he wouldn’t have been driving in that place, so it’s the pavement’s fault. It’s bullshit. He may not have gone out that night intending to kill someone but he did and it is a direct result of his actions alone.

Kirk chose to drive. Kirk chose to drink. He chose to keep drinking. He has a history with alcohol and knows the effect it has on him and his decision-making and yet he continues to choose to do it. He wasn’t drunk when he started drinking. Getting drunk isn’t something that happened TO him. It is something he chose to do to himself.

I dunno. Maybe the kids are better off growing up without this guy in their lives? Exactly what kind of example has he been setting for them? Maybe him not being around will help show them that there is a better way to be so that they don’t grow up thinking that his behavior is remotely normal. Some kids are better off without a dad around when their dad is a piece of shit.

And I vehemently disagree that he didn’t do something “on purpose”. Oh, “it’s not his fault, he was drunk” is an absolute cop out. Isn’t this the third time he’s been caught OVI? How many other times has he done this and not been caught. He’s had years and years to get his shit together and recognize he has a problem with booze and he hasn't done shit. How many OVI’s do you have to get before you make a change? Regardless, he wasn’t drunk when he made the decision to go to a bar and start drinking, he wasn’t drunk when he order his second drink or his third drink or his fourth drink. He made a whole lot of sober choices before he ever made a drunk choice. The alcohol is not to blame for this, he is. The lack of accountability for shit people do when they’ve been drinking is a joke. Alcohol doesn’t make you a different person, it just shows who you really are. And he apparently really is a piece of shit,

How the trial goes will be telling. Is he going to plead out or are we going to get a sob story about the alcohol’s interactions with medication, or it was too dark out, or it was too light out, or it’s the bar’s fault for overserving him? He’s entitled to the best defense he can get, but that doesn’t mean he has to use it.

You’d think someone working in the Columbus sports community might be even more aware of the dangers of drunk driving after Johnny and Matty Gaudreau’s deaths less than a year ago, but here we fucking are again and another person minding their own business is dead because some dumb cunt got behind the wheel drunk.

Fuck this guy.
Two lives ended when Barton decided to drive drunk.

Oh and Criminal negligence, which is what this is by Barton, is not a "mistake". This isn't his first rodeo being a drunk driver.

I’m not. He should do time and a lot of it.

Of course it’s most sad that someone died. That was someone’s son and probably someone’s husband or boyfriend. However I also think many forget that now Barton’s kids will grow up without a father and a family is broken up. Lots of victims everywhere.

Many of us have made most of their biggest errors when they’re drunk (I know basically ALL of my embarrassment and regretful moments are because of alcohol). Whether it’s cursing someone out here on BP after the Oregon loss, saying something you regret to a loved one, or worse driving drunk. I admit I’ve driven when I shouldn’t have before. So I can’t imagine the grief he’s going to feel when he sobers up and realizes he’s going to lose the best years of his life.

So yes the young man dying is the worst thing of this but Barton’s life is effectively over too. I don’t wish that on anyone.

I personally think this is sad all the way around. Barton made a mistake, a grave one, but this is different than doing something on purpose.

He’s going to rightfully pay the price for that but I hope Barton can get out of prison. Not for him but for his Kids. Kids without a father figure is about one of the more destructive things today in America.

This is going to play out for a few years because our legal system is slow. But hopefully, he accepts his responsibility and serves a few (5-8 minimum) years. Gets his shit together and rejoins society.

And honestly, if he wasn't a former player or had a podcast, would we mention him first over the victim?

Ethan Perry, RIP. And condolences to the family and friends.

Stop it. He needs to go away for a while but it was obviously a mistake. Literally the biggest mistake someone can make that leads to taking a life.

Barton always needed to get sober that was always the thing with him. I’d imagine 10-15 years is likely in order which should sober him up.

I can’t imagine what any of these people involved are dealing with right now. Someone lost a loved one and the other family loses a husband and father for a very long time.

This isn’t a life in jail kind of mistake though. This was stupidity and it cost someone their life.
