Jim Knowles (DC Penn St.)

I am still marveling at the speed run completed by PSU to INTENSE rival of Ohio State.

1). PSU joins the B1G in 1990
2). In a curious scheduling twist, they don't play Ohio State until 1993
3). In 31 years, they have won 8 times.

Now apparently you guys are a legacy rival.
Some of this was "probably" predictable. PSU doesn't really have a home conference. It dicked around as an independent for years and then in the Big East football conference.

Side note - what the hell happened in 1994?
1. and 2. PSU was announced to be joining the Big Ten in about 1990. But 1993 was the first season they played in the conference for football.
3. Hm... Sounds about right. I want to say 1994, either 1996 or 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2016. Yep - 8 times. And they've played every year since 1993. Next year (2026) will be the first year they don't play.
The 1990's were close. Ohio State won at Happy Valley in 1995, I think. The next time the visiting team won was 2003, when Ohio State (top 5 team) needed Penn State to miss a 60-yard field goal attempt (that didn't miss by much) to win. The next time the visiting team won was 2007 (again, Ohio State over Penn State). Penn State won at Ohio State in 2008 and then again in 2011. The series really started to take off for Ohio State in 2002, but it went into a new gear in 2012. 13 games, with 1 win for Penn State. And, if you haven't seen the game, go back to that game in 2016 and tell me who the better team was.

1994 - First, Penn State was better, and it wasn't close. Second, Ohio State's best player was Eddie George, and he got dinged early in the game. He probably could have come back, but when you're already down about 35-0, is that the best idea? Third, the players are human, and get discouraged, just like anyone else. When the players lose hope, they start to quit. I don't think Penn State was 49 points better than Ohio State that year. Fourth, when Ohio State quit, Penn State pushed the gas pedal down. I don't fault them for it, as they were trying to hold their #1 ranking, and it isn't Penn State's job to stop Penn State from scoring. But anyone who thinks Paterno didn't run up the score ever didn't watch that game.

Denver Nuggets (official thread)

OKC is the better team overall, but the Nuggets are a tough matchup for them (when the Nuggets aren't being loose with the ball) because they can pound them on the boards and get transition buckets. Gordon seems to have finally gotten back to full speed, after a season of recurring nagging injuries, over the last week to ten days, and they're playing much stronger defense than they did for most of the season. I still expect OKC to win the series (my pre-series prediction was 6 games), but it's a tough matchup.
Having a star, who has already won it all, like Jokic is a real x-factor. Also having Murray and Gordon who have made a title run with him really help.

Should be a great series.

2025 scUM Shenanigans, Arguments - NCAA: no wins taken away, no postseason ban

So Shannon thinks this is going to go away if he self-imposes a three-game suspension of games he - not the NCAA - picks to be suspended.

I almost soiled my armor.
Correction .... 2 games not 3. Let's not get carried away with these punishments for doing absolutely nothing. It's a witch hunt or whatever you want to call it ....

The Nugs did not just steal that game from OKC like that! OKC clearly the superior team, but somehow game 1 goes to the Nuggies.

Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

For so many years, they did whatever they wanted. Schedule who they want, when they want, where they want. Pick their own refs. Nobody told them what to do. They had the privilege of setting themselves up for success with every decision JoePa made. When they were no longer able to make their own rules, any decision that went against them felt like an attack because they had never never experienced not getting what they want. It's like raising a kid and never telling them "no" -- that kid is going to turn out terribly. Even 30+ years after joining the Big Ten, that mindset has been passed down from generation to generation of PSU fans. TCUN fans have inherited arrogance. ND fans have inherited self-righteousness. PSU fans have inherited victimhood. Fuck them.

Buckeye Nation

That’s a fine Rushmore, and better than 98% of other teams

For me though, I see three guys there that each have 1 NC

Paul Brown matches that, and brought innovation to the game that few in all of football can match. IMHO I would have Mr Brown on my Rushmore. I do have someone in mind for removal to make room for him, but… off-season or no, I’d prefer not to get into that pissing contest

Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I absolutely believe they're a cult. But I didn't know why them and no one else. You have good points, but they could also be said about Notre Dame. Maybe they don't have one coach for a million years, and not quite as shielded. Maybe they're also a cult.
So how many years will it take the Big Ten to un-cult them? Will that ever happen?
I don't think it will. It's been handed down that they belong at the big boy table from grand parent to parent to child. They BELONG. They DESERVE. Why isn't everybody talking about Penn State's pair of titles the way they talk about Alabama's 37? IT'S NOT FAIR!
