Deciding When to Retire

It’s really not about being the smartest person in the room or the company.

It’s about dealing with distraction. People don’t listen, don’t pay attention, and people certainly don’t read.

It’s about dealing with organizations hiring us to modernize their systems, but are driven by not rocking the boat of the current processes.

It’s about having to develop to the lowest common denominator. Again, because attention spans are short.
Everyone likes to support the idea that "we need change", until they're faced with the reality that that includes them changing as well, and not everybody else.

Deciding When to Retire

If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room.
The same might work putting "business" in place of "room". If you're the smartest person in your company, maybe you need a new company.

Deciding When to Retire

True story - I was on the road almost every other week for 35 years. When I first started seriously talking about retiring my wife didn't want me to. She said she wasn't sure she wanted me around that much. It would disturb all of her routines. A couple years later Covid hit and I wasn't allowed to travel most of the year. She found out it wasn't that bad having me at home. I retired early '21 and haven't regretted a day of it. It must be ok with my wife since she hasn't yet changed the locks. If I can make it until September it will be 50 years without her changing the locks.

Deciding When to Retire

This last week continued to convince me that I either need to do something different for the next few years if I go to full retirement or to go next year. I spent most of the week thinking I just can’t deal with this stupidity anymore.

College Football Playoffs Expansion Discussion

TLDR:
Remember that one time in high school when that jerk-ass ass-ass punched you from behind? And when you turned around he was already hiding behind a teacher? Let's speculate about what might have happened if the teacher hadn't been there.
Or that time in grade school when someone bumped you at the drinking fountain and you got water down your pants, and people thought you peed your pants? Let's speculate about what might have happened if you weren't bumped.
Or that time you were too chicken to put the moves on that cute girl you liked? And then some other nerd swooped in at the party and you caught them smooching in the corner? Here's what might have happened if you made your move.
And some other things that might have happened, and if you weren't too busy living in the past you might enjoy some recent accomplishments.

Neal Shipley (PGA Golf Pro)

Only $36k so far this year, playing golf. We should all be so miserable
In golf though, that’s indicative of his play and placement. It’s also very minimal winnings with his costs. I’m sure he has sponsors but that can dry up if he doesn’t start playing more weekends and getting higher on the board.

Earnings also play into getting into the no cut tournaments. This is why you see Koepka playing so much, to raise his status.

Neal Shipley (PGA Golf Pro)

So far this year, Shipley has only made the cut 2 times (finishing T68 and T38) out of 11 tournaments and winning just $36,472. However, he did do pretty well yesterday in the opening round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson Tournament. He shot a 66 which ties him at 16th place.

The 66 is his best PGA round so far this year:

Is this thing going to be televised, maybe the B10 channel? What with all the baseball games going on, might be overlooked? Looks like the first four ladies are pretty stout scoringwise. Will take a solid five players to win this puppy. Go bucks!
