Ohio State's black stripe tradition is as strong as ever in 2025.
Implemented by Urban Meyer when he first took over as the Buckeyes' head coach in 2012, any new Ohio State players are given a black stripe to wear overtop the typically scarlet one on their helmets. This includes incoming freshmen, transfers and walk-ons.
The black stripe is not removed until that player proves he is willing to put in the work it takes to contribute to one of the nation's top programs and elevated himself enough in practice that coaches take notice. By the tradition, a player is not “officially” a Buckeye until his black stripe is removed.
After redshirt freshmen Miles Lockhart, Dominic Kirks, Simon Lorentz and Eric Mensah, transfers Max Klare and Ethan Onianwa and freshman Quincy Porter got their black stripes removed in the spring, we're here to track all of the Buckeyes who shed theirs this fall.

Black Stripe Removals

Nov. 5, 2025

Glorien Gough

The first Buckeye of November to have his black stripe removed was walk-on cornerback Glorien Gough.
A former member of Ohio State’s club football team, Gough is in his second year with the Buckeyes. The Mater Dei alumnus made the first game appearance of his career on kickoff coverage in Ohio State’s 70-0 win over Grambling State in Week 2, and could now be a candidate to push for more playing time on special teams.

Here’s a good one. Call the dealership to get my car in for service. Tell them what’s going on.

“Would you like to get that in for service”

"No. I thought this was a car owners therapy hotline. I just wanted to tell you about it. I'm going to have it fixed at the other place but I feel a lot better after talking it through with you. Thanks"

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but, is anyone else feeling a bit...bored? It's like we're sleepwalking through this season just waiting on The Game ad the Playoff after. I've never felt this way but it's, kind of awesome.
These games really do feel like scrimmages where we're working out issues with the run game

A gigantic human being.

I almost ran into him, literally walking and nearly took a moving brick wall to the face as it happens lol, walking to class one day.
This was my experience walking towards a freshman Chase Young on campus

I get it….CJ is also known for pass protection so I honestly think they thought they could get a “free” 5-6 yards but as we’ve seen, nothing is “free” in this run game.

I truly think the thought process there, is we get at least 5 on 1st we’re getting aggressive on 2nd and 3rd and looking for a TD (at a minimum they go tempo to push pace).

1st down goes poorly we’re working game clock, and at most looking for a FG. They’d have worked the clock close to a minute left and still had 2nd and 3rd down. The fumble obviously wrecked that plan.
I like this except it doesn't account for my personal hatred of those assholes, and I don't know why Ryan Day hasn't made it clear to the entire coaching staff that BuckeyeNation27 wants 199-0.

Also, the game intelligence and processing speed to maximize the athletic talent. He’s a poster child for the Developed Here motto. Bringing him along relatively slowly and then getting him real minutes last year is making him a top ten, at least, pick in his first year as a starter. He clearly bought in and was willing to put in the work. Just outstanding, but it sucks that we’ll only have him for one year as a starter.
