For sure, they’re tied by $. But if it was purely a $ decision, Miami gets left out.
Personally, I was very surprised by the decision.
Bama is part of their company. Miami and ND are not so the immediate tv eyeballs isn't really where you "follow the money" (imo).
If it was me, there was an understanding that my portfolio company (the SEC) would get a certain amount of slots (within limits of keeping up the appearance of relevancy) so my other portfolio company's (ESPN) televised tournament could give me, and my shareholders, two bites of the apple.
I'm not a tv rights/marketing guy though so not sure of the exact economics of it.
At the end of the day Disney owns ESPN. ESPN has a direct financial stake in the SEC. Disney is obligated to increase shareholder value. It is not obligated to meet some public threshold of "fair" (which it never implicitly promised). It's implied to be fair.
At it's original heart/core DNA Disney is in the business of selling fantasies to people (PG version). They are storytellers. Now, in business terms, it's a publicly owned media conglomerate but that's what they do. Their "why" is entertainment.
I can't believe people still get outraged about this tuff personally. It's being pissed off at a squirrel for climbing a tree.

They lost their 2 toughest games and beat garbage cans except for a decent USC team. Were people crying this bad about teams ranked 10-15 with multiple losses during the BCS or 4-playoff team era? No, because they didn't deserve a shot. We no longer have deserving 0- and 1- loss teams getting left out. Everyone controls their destiny. Give me a break with this crusade against the committee for leaving out a 10-2 Notre Dame with 1 decent win
