Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

Oh they were very clearly playing for a FG at the buzzer Saturday night. I don't think it's a confidence issue in Fielding per se.

I really do think the corner kicks were intentional, especially the first one. Kinda like golf - you try to hit a lay up and miss it. Well dammit, I'm trying again and miss it. Since it's a beautiful sunny day and no one is behind you, well, try it again sort of thing.

In the Marshall game, it was clear Marshall wasn't going to win, so working on something like that makes sense at a certain level. not sure I try it 3 times myself but it is what it is.....
I think they were probably playing for a FG too, but just not doing obvious things required to get there. That's my real beef at the end of the game.

On the kickoffs, completely agree that's what was happening and I like the analogy. But if that's true, then Day needed to own up to some of that. My main point that wasn't stated very clearly is that I think fans might look at kickoffs and think field goals as the same thing when they're not. To use your analogy, just because you can't drive the ball well doesn't mean you can't have solid iron play

But the vast majority of that last drive at the end was pretty horrendous even considering all the mitigating factors already brought up in the thread. I don't think we can explain away Day in the waning moments of big games (not saying you did, but some seem to be). Not writing him off and I freaking love the guy, but winners find a way to win more of these games. If you want to step into CEO mode, you gotta be the CEO and close, or know even if other factors are involved the buck stops with you. He has openly admitted that but he's got a big hump to get over this season for road to meet the rubber. The hump is a little smaller with the new playoff system, but it's still a big hump at Ohio State.

We'll see how the rest of the season plays out, just feel like I'm a broken record in saying that is all. Go Bucks and let's regroup on this bye week.

2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

My dad and I were debating that very topic, or at least discussing. I agree there are no Bosa or Young types of talent this year. But collectively as a unit last year we were dominant and most of those guys are back, which leads me to think scheme is more to blame even if play has dropped off.

Another thing is maybe losing Hall, Eich and Chambers hurt more than we expected. I just figured the talent was there to replace them with everyone coming back. Which again leads me to believe scheme is a major problem because you have Simon who I thought was pretty proven and same with Styles, Hicks and Powers in the wings at LB. Still have Tyleik and Hamilton inside. Without the benefit of reviewing the film, I can't definitely say what all is to blame but it sure seems like scheme and coaching is the big culprit.

Burke has been getting torched in man coverage, but the rest of the DBs altogether shouldn't be allowing receivers to be running wild with huge gaps in coverage. Some of the missed tackles are just so bad that I'm wondering what's going on with coaching. I'll be watching that issue more closely in future games, that's for sure.
Come on, man. You are better than that. Until Oregon you didn’t even hear his name because teams wouldn’t throw his way.

2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

I thought this as well, but midseason I'm looking at the defense and not seeing a lot of first rounders. Sawyer, JT, and Hamilton look like solid 3rd rounders and Tyliek is a late 1st, early 2nd. Don't see any of the LBs going higher than late rounds. Maybe Sonny due to athletic profile. Igbinosun is good, but not sure he's going before the 3rd round. Hancock 2nd, late 1st round and Burke, who knows at this point. Thought he was a mid-first, but he's had an average year and an atrocious game against top competition. Ransom seems like a mid rounder who is great at some things, but not good enough in coverage. EDIT: Forgot Downs. He's an obvious elite player and 1st rounder.

Maybe it's a one game overreaction, we'll see, but not as many of them have dominated or consistently flashed like I thought they would. I thought Sawyer and JT would make a jump and Burke would be the reliable shutdown corner. They're good, not great, and you can certainly win with them, but seniors who are multi-year starters need to be a lot more consistent and reliable against same level competition.

HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

We're gonna win it all this year. Ryan Day will join a very very small list of active coaches who have won a title. All this talk will die. And in a few years when we're celebrating a dynasty, you won't be able to find someone who ever thought he should be fired.
Bitch, please.

If you take exception to that.... Then we aren't as good of buddies as Thump and I or BKB.

Because he is costing the team games with his incompetence?

Dude you're so off base in this entire conversation it shouldn't even be possible. Who is criticizing the players right now? Seriously...who?

And regardless of that answer, why are you moving the goalposts? This is a discussion about Ryan Day, in the Ryan Day thread. This weak ass sarcastic comment about criticizing players (which I nor literally anybody is doing) is somehow even worse than talking about Vegas odds and rankings.

Stans gonna Stan I guess, I'll leave yall to it. In the meantime hopefully Ryan Day actually learns a lesson and applies it correctly next time, for the first time. So far in these situations he's 0-3 with 3 whiffs. Pretty soon he'll be hoping to be at the mendoza line.
If that's what you took from what I've been saying, you need to examine who is off base here

Serious question: Why should I be uncomfortable with this?
Because he is costing the team games with his incompetence?

Because....you're not a "real fan" if you don't demand instant gratification and total perfection on the field from a group of 18-22 year olds dammit!

That’s funny because I don’t see at the least a lack of CFB experience. There isn’t a position I can think on the team next year that doesn’t have a player that could start that hasn’t been in the program for at least 2yrs, outside of QB and RB. And the possible starter already looks like a stud, and the possible future QB starter has probably the livest arm currently in the room, and has received nothing but rave reviews from coaches and insiders. OSU can easily be right back in the NC and conference championship hunt next season
We are real thin at most of the non skill positions. Being on the team does not equal experience. Check out the snap counts. We haven’t built the proper depth in the trenches whatsoever. They will have to hit the portal pretty hard for the heavy lifters next year.

Needs to beat both PSU and tCun to keep the fanbase. If he loses to either, I can't see him recovering. This is his year to get it done. Next year, I expect a significant drop-off in talent/experience.
