UCLA research suggests playing pro football can increase risk of developing ALS

The study looked at close to 20,000 professional football players who had participated in at least one game between 1960 and 2019. The data showed that professional football players were four times more likely than the general population to develop and die from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a neurodegenerative disease.

Because the study covers 59 years, the researchers were also able to make an important connection between the length of a player’s football career and their risk of developing ALS. Specifically, the longer someone played football, the greater their likelihood of developing ALS became. Those players who developed ALS played more than 50% longer than those who did not.

2026 World Cup (Official Thread)

Am I reading this correctly? This year is 2026, and they're asking the USA to 'consider' an event 12 years in the future? Granted don't know what this takes, certainly one or two soccer stadia, plus plenty of hotel/dorms/other housing for the multitudes of people expected to come here? Is this the type of money pit that the Olympics has become? One-time infra-structures for places that sit empty after the event? Granted, am not a big fan of soccer (any sport that doesn't use hands is a tad strange to me), so help me clear away the fog.
I don't think it's as bad here as it is in, say, Qatar, with a nothing domestic league and the need to build a bunch of stadiums. We have plenty of both soccer-only stadiums and NFL/giant stadiums to host games already, to the extent we don't need to build infrastructure really. Even in places like Italy, after the WC you have cavernous stadiums in places like Bari where second division teams play and they are lucky to draw 5,000 for a game. Here we have enough MLS teams that as long as they are willing to stage group games at places that hold like 25,000, we have more than enough stadiums to cover it. We also have cathedrals for pro and college football that can seat up to 100K or more for bigger games in the KO stages. All that said, there are a lot of politics involved, so I can't imagine we'll get it back anywhere near that quickly, but from an infrastructure standpoint (stadiums, hotels, airports, etc.) I think we're probably one of the top choices.

Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Harden declines $42.3 million player option with Cavs; working on long-term deal

James Harden has declined his $42.3 million player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers, per ESPN, but the former MVP is not expected to spend much time on the free-agent market.

Harden made it clear after the Cavs' loss in the Eastern Conference Finals that he wanted to be back in Cleveland long-term, and the two sides are reportedly working on a new multi-year deal. Harden averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game on 46.6/43.5/84.0 shooting splits in the regular season after arriving in Cleveland at the trade deadline.

His averages dipped a touch in the postseason -- 19.2 points, 5.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds on 41.0/41.0/83.1 splits -- and the question with Harden has long been his ability to reach his top level in the playoffs. Even so, after flipping Darius Garland for Harden, the Cavs don't have much choice regarding the veteran guard if they want to remain near the top of the Eastern Conference. They will hope a full season with Harden and Donovan Mitchell allows them to be the fourth straight Eastern Conference team to go from Conference Finals losers to the Finals, joining the Celtics, Pacers and Knicks.

A new long-term deal for Harden will likely come in at a lower annual number than the $42.3 million option he declined, which will help keep Cleveland below the dreaded second apron. Creating real financial flexibility would require a far more dramatic shakeup from the Cavs. So far, they've signaled little interest in such a move and instead seem to be planning another summer of largely running it back, keeping Kenny Atkinson as coach and now working to re-sign Harden.
So, after crashing and burning in the playoffs, they are going to stand pat and spend even more years and money on the guy they brought in who didn't help. Makes total sense for Cleveland sports.

This is God-awful. ALS is a terrible disease and he seems like a good dude with a nice family. He was a great player, but that doesn't even matter. I hope he is able to get as much out of life as he possibly can.

HS Swim Team - any experience?

When you have 10 heats (8 swimmers per heat) for the 50 freestyle, then you know you're in summer swim. Yeah, per gender. Easiest stroke, so everyone teaches it, or simply does it. The longer events, and the more complex strokes shrink the field(s) proportionally. If your kid is able, have them do the IM (individual medley), as the ability to swim all four strokes is very difficult. Hardest event is the 500 butterfly, as the butter takes more out of you than you think possible. In the IM, daughter would usually lead or be second in first stroke (back), and power her way to first after the fly, and third leg, the breaststroke would kick her back to 4-5, and then she'd regain to 2-3 with free. Kept working on the breast until she injured shoulder, so no butterfly, and thus, no IM.
My son is 200IM focused, hell bent on making it to state this year in that event. he only swam it 2 times last season, but fell in love with it because of how hard it is. summer swim doesn't have it, so he's been rotating between the different strokes to start fine tuning things. really proud of his hard work

2028 CA DB Gaige Weddle (Verbal Offer)

I’m a little worried about that scum up north for Weddle. Gut feeling, dad played for Whittingham, and he could easily play as a freshman there due to their room likely being weaker than ours and UGA

Michigan wasn’t named as a factor per Adam Gorney. Ohio State and Georgia battle with Oklahoma behind them. Utah, UCLA, Cal and Oregon were named as other schools of interest.

2028 GA DB Casey Barner (Verbal Offer)

Georgia fans are already conceding that they will lose Casey Barner to us, they know they can’t compete with Ohio State NIL wise.

I could see us landing Barner and Weddle going to Georgia, it’s been shown that NFL legacies don’t put as much emphasis on NIL as other recruits do.

2027 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Just got Lindy's Annual on the Big Ten. About month or so later than the overall College Football. Anyway, look at projected top players in nation, and top players in the B10. Kinda surprising, am used to see several/many players listed among the elites. Nary a Buckeye mentioned in either mag. Probably the penalty of losing so many players to NFL. Last year, zero mention of any LB other than Sonny, but we all know how that turned out. Anyway, seems like the pundits are downplaying the Buckeyes individually, but has the team in top 5. Kinda contradictory, so seems like the writers are counting on the Buckeye coaches to build/meld or otherwise cobble together these players into top flight competition. Hopefully our coaches are using these prognostications to instill fire in their loins to go out and conquer. Go Bucks!

So what's the over/under on how many sign up for S&G? Betting we get two. Have my own preferences, but any of the two will fill holes/add depth to the Buckeyes.

Fakatou - 90% postive hes a Buckeye
Torbert - 25%
May - 50%
DGG - 75%

Golden State Warriors (6x NBA Champions)

Draymond Green declines Warriors' option, becomes free agent

Draymond Green is heading to free agency. The Warriors veteran has declined a $27.7 million player option for the 2026-27 season and will be a free agent tomorrow evening. Green has only played for the Warriors during his 14-year NBA career and has won four championships with the squad. The Warriors could bring Green back at a smaller average annual value and help make more moves possible.

The Warriors are said to be chasing both LeBron James in free agency and Anthony Davis on the trade market. Those moves would reunite LeBron and AD and pair them with Stephen Curry as Curry and James chase a fifth title.
