The US is staging the men's World Cup for the second time, having previously done so in 1994

The United States could consider making a bid to host the men's 2038 World Cup, says the executive director of the White House's World Cup task force.

The US are co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico, with the tournament having been expanded from 32 teams to 48.

Fifa is considering expanding the format even further to 64 teams as early as 2030.

"When you think that this World Cup may at some point expand out to 64 teams, I think the United States can handle it," said Andrew Giuliani.

"Let me make sure we get through this World Cup on 19 July before we make our pitch for 2038 or other ones."

Am I reading this correctly? This year is 2026, and they're asking the USA to 'consider' an event 12 years in the future? Granted don't know what this takes, certainly one or two soccer stadia, plus plenty of hotel/dorms/other housing for the multitudes of people expected to come here? Is this the type of money pit that the Olympics has become? One-time infra-structures for places that sit empty after the event? Granted, am not a big fan of soccer (any sport that doesn't use hands is a tad strange to me), so help me clear away the fog.

I don't think it's as bad here as it is in, say, Qatar, with a nothing domestic league and the need to build a bunch of stadiums. We have plenty of both soccer-only stadiums and NFL/giant stadiums to host games already, to the extent we don't need to build infrastructure really. Even in places like Italy, after the WC you have cavernous stadiums in places like Bari where second division teams play and they are lucky to draw 5,000 for a game. Here we have enough MLS teams that as long as they are willing to stage group games at places that hold like 25,000, we have more than enough stadiums to cover it. We also have cathedrals for pro and college football that can seat up to 100K or more for bigger games in the KO stages. All that said, there are a lot of politics involved, so I can't imagine we'll get it back anywhere near that quickly, but from an infrastructure standpoint (stadiums, hotels, airports, etc.) I think we're probably one of the top choices.

Yeah, see your point, which is a good one. Probably be held back East, where travel times between big cities with dedicated soccer pitches are shorter. Am not educated in WC, but do they start matches at 8:00am, and run them every two hours, ending at say 9:00pm? Taking C'bus as example, there's what, two soccer stadia, and the Horseshoe, that could be outfitted to be soccer field? So could conceivably get a bunch of games spread over the three venues.
