2026 tOSU Offense Discussion

WHAT DO YA GOT?! Christian made another interesting comment on Wednesday — I told you! He’s quotable! This one was about Ohio State’s offense under new coordinator Arthur Smith.

“I think there’s just plays off plays off plays,” Christian said. “We’ll set you up one way and then come back. It looks the same, but it’s a different play.”

I attended Ohio State’s first three practices and can concur: There’s a lot of misdirection (I understand the offense has evolved from practice three to practice 13). There’s also a lot of motion. Jeremiah Smith starts as an H-back, then motions to the slot. Bo Jackson starts out wide and motions into the backfield. Nate Roberts is in a two-point stance, then steps forward and puts his hand in the dirt.

There’s enough happening to keep a defense on its heels before, during and after the snap — even for a unit led by Matt Patricia.

“I was talking to Payton (Pierce) about it. I was like, ‘Hey, man, what do you see in the middle? Is this confusing?’ He was like, ‘Man, I don’t know how defenses are gonna stop this,’” Christian said.

Christian Alliegro said something similar on Thursday.

“I don’t want to say he’s schemin’ us up in practice, but it feels like he is,” Alliegro said of Smith’s offense. “He’s got a lot of good plays under his belt. He’s super smart. And when you have a quarterback like Julian Sayin, you can really do whatever with that offense. And obviously, all the talent we have outside and inside with our running backs, receivers and O-line. It’s really good.”

I mean, sheesh.

That reminds me of how Patricia operated last season. Even in the season opener against Texas, Patricia made it look like the Buckeyes were throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Heisman frontrunner Arch Manning, only to run basic sets that relied on athletes like Arvell Reese, Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs and Kayden McDonald to make plays.

If we see something similar from Arthur Smith — with him disguising the offense’s intentions and leaning on Julian Sayin, Jackson, Jeremiah Smith and Ohio State’s many playmakers — then ooooooh wee, the Buckeyes’ offense could provide plenty of fireworks this fall. Count me in.

He played for a team that competes in that league but only made the squad/participated in 2 games - when they were playing in the much smaller Europe Cup (B squad basically).

He had 14 pts, 12 reb in one game. Then 4 pts, 2 reb the other vs some low level teams.

His most prominent playing time is 49 games in the Argentinian League (2024/25) where he averaged 7 and 3.

Seems like the Buckeye beat is hyping this up but it’s just another body to me.

  • Spent three years training with the Argentinian National Team and competed in the 2026 AmeriCup and World Cup Qualifiers for his home country
  • At the club level, he played with UCAM Murcia in Spain, playing in the Liga ACB, one of Europe’s top leagues
  • In 2025-26, he played on UCAM’s top team and averaged 18.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game and shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor
  • He played the 2024-25 season with Argentina’s most successful club team, Atenas de Córdoba, he helped lead the team to an appearance in the final four of the South American Basketball Champions League while averaging 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game.
  • At the U19 World Cup in 2023, he averaged 17.1 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting over 56 percent from the floor in seven games for Argentina

Hate to see that. Hoping he can gut out a roster spot. Dude throws a really pretty ball and has flashed some surprising pocket acumen tonight.

Dude has it all. The only knock I see with him is he takes a lot of direct hits and a ton of gang tackles. He fights like crazy every play but it’ll be interesting to see how that works out in college.

He was taking some major blows in that game highlight and that’s vs kids in Tennessee. Also tends to dance a good bit too.

But when he gets downhill he’s really impressive.

We’ll see where this goes if Tennessee flunks out this year.

The only thing I’ll add that’s sour grapes is that if he really requested number 0 but we told him we couldn’t do that due to the tradition. Then good for OSU for sticking to it because we shouldn’t break these traditions for no player.

Friedl and Hayes get back-to-back hits, and you'd think that would be the entire statement. But it's not. Elly then hits... into a double play to end the inning.

Elly seems to be hitting the same wall that he did last season when he wouldn't take the day off. Hits are way down and the errors up the past several weeks. Can't remember the last time he got a hit from the left side of the plate.

"Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university."

Pickett was wearing the No. 5 jersey when the Tigers opened preseason practice last week, leading to questions about why first-year LSU coach Lane Kiffin had allowed the jersey swap to happen.

"Jayden made it clear that he did not want his number given to another player, and he believed his wishes would be respected," the statement said. "His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history. To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU."

Kiffin told reporters on Aug. 5 that Pickett had been promised he could wear No. 5 when he signed with the Tigers in December 2024. Pickett had worn that number as a high school star in Zephyrhills, Florida, where he was the No. 2 cornerback in the Class of 2025 by ESPN Recruiting.

However, LSU's current policy regarding jerseys being retired, which is published on its athletic department website, states that any number retired after Jan. 1, 2007, "does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach."

Yeah I have to admit I think the concerns are overblown too. We gave up 5 sacks all year until the final 2 games.

We struggled vs the movement of IU and the ran into 2 first round DEs vs Miami. Those just weren’t the best DLs we played but they were 2 of the best.

Throw in a first year OC, a true freshman RB and a QB that went unchallenged all year? It’s no surprise the offense struggled
