Ohio State vs. #2 ttun, Sunday Feb. 8, 1pm EST, CBS

Without a significant increase in available NIL you’re not bringing in a high tier coach and without a high tier coach you’re not getting a significant increase in available NIL. Is that where we’re at?
That's what they're claiming, that another coach would command greater NIL, but that's a sketchy claim. I don't think the NIL-oriented coaches who were floated as possibilities like May and Calipari ever were seriously considering OSU because they couldn't get the spending commitment that they wanted. Another coaching search now changes nothing other than getting the "whipping boy" Diebler out.

Should semipro/college players be paid, or allowed to sell their stuff? (NIL and Revenue Sharing)

In the “dumbest use of money” section:

In the survey of Power Four general managers and staffers, On3 asked if there were any players significantly overpaid in the cycle. Seven responses came back with Texas Tech five-star offensive tackle commit Felix Ojo. Sources have told On3 that Ojo’s three-year deal is expectedto pay an average of $775,000 annually.

“Felix Ojo,” an SEC general manager said. “Texas Tech paid for measurables over tape. Every year, we get hit on high-ranked guys who aren’t good. If Jackson Cantwell actually got $5 million over three years, that’s a big risk

Another SEC general manager told On3, “Ojo is overrated. When I arrived here, we were recruiting him. I put on his tape and immediately took us off him. He stinks.”
Per BH poster:
Yeah I’ve even seen Texas Tech fans on their board admit he’s unlikely playable until year three. Which means you have a two year investment worth probably around $5 million in hopes he‘s ready to play in three years. It’s also banking on you having the right OL coach that can get him there. Not close to worth it.

This is why giving such big money to highly ranked HS lineman is so precarious. The positions that are the hardest to predict and getting some of the most money yet most are complete unknowns for several years. Hence the preference on transfers now

Fuck Diebler. Half-assed coach

If Diebler were showing he was a good coach but struggling cause of severe lack of talent it would be one thing but that is not the case

To this point he's only shown he is way in over his head as a head coach at a major program. The team constantly looks under prepared and like they have no clue what their identity is or what they are supposed to be doing. There is zero direction anywhere it always turns into a every man for himself game. The softness and lack of constantly hustle and effort is also a reflection of the coach. This team doesn't have national contender level talent but that doesn't excuse the piss poor coaching job by Diebler.

I'm so apathetic towards the program that I didn't even know they played scUM until I saw the score online.

The AD doesn't want to put effort into the program, why should I care?

Some people want to blame NIL alone but the NIL problem is absolutely created by the lack of care in non football sports by the Athletic Department. A serious hoops program doesn't just hand the keys to the assistant of the former failed coach.

I'm not expecting annual national title runs. But I think multiple year tournament droughts are not acceptable. We should be able to at least make the tournament more often than not. The fact that people are ok with potentially 4 tournamentless years before even considering firing Diebler speaks to the low this program has hit.

Hate to say it but Cupps should be playing more in my opinion. He can shoot, just chooses not to. Wouldn’t be surprised to see White, Cupps, and even Chatman transfer. These kids don’t like riding the pine when the ones on the floor are stinking up the joint. I don’t blame them either. This damn team is nothing but a bunch of dribblers. Yes, that includes Bruce! I see better ball movement in high school.
Maybe I haven't watched enough games, but from what I've seen, Cupps doesn't belong in the top 8 of any BIG roster.

To the Diebler defenders how much time is "enough time"? Are you still ok with him if he misses the tournament again next year?

What about the conclusion of this year? They could realistically lose every remaining game. If the only win down the stretch is against Ped State are you ok with that?
As not exactly a defender but as someone who supported the hire in a why not take a chance on it working out given where Holtmann had left things and his initially putting some energy into the team, I'd can him if we're not dancing next year, assuming of course that we're out this year, which is probably a pretty safe assumption. We're solidly above the trash of the BIG and solidly below the top and second tier quality of the BIG, and that's not good enough for me. While I agree with others that the administration isn't doing Diebler any favors, they still don't have to be mostly soft and play stupidly for large stretches of games.

Disagree. Right now fans aren't going to support OSU hoops NIL in a manner that moved their station nationally regardless of who's the coach.

Well we will have to disagree....I have little doubt that if a Dusty May or Pat Kelsey was at Ohio State that NIL would not be in a much better situation.

I think those go a bit hand in hand....enthusiasm in Diebler and the program are at what feels like all-time lows, so to expect significant NIL support is unreasonable. A hiring that brought back energy would see at least some uptick into NIL.

Would you take a job if you were told "here are bottom-half of Big Ten resources at a school that fans expect to contend for B1G championships, and oh by the way, many fans will lobby for you to be fired if you aren't making the NCAA tournament within 2 years"? If you see things from that perspective, it's not hard to see how we ended up with Jake Diebler as the head coach.

Maybe a head coach hire that actually inspired even just some enthusiasm would get some more NIL rolling into the program. I'd argue the athletic department has created the poor conditions for everything but football.

I think Diebler was cheap and he was right there so they didn't have to actually have a coaching search they didn't really want to put the effort into. That's how we ended up with Diebler.

So we should just expect mediocrity. Ok.

I didn't say 16 wins is meeting expectations. He's in Year 2 and NIL is not helping, it's actively hurting him.

2025-2026 Ohio State Men's Basketball

OSU's next game is vs USC on 2/11. I'd say that is as much of a must-win as you can have with tourney hopes hanging on by a thread at this point. But it's a tricky game, though, as USC obviously has some very talented players, and has invested in building depth on their roster (something that OSU has not done at a comparable level).
