Deciding When to Retire

It’s really not about being the smartest person in the room or the company.

It’s about dealing with distraction. People don’t listen, don’t pay attention, and people certainly don’t read.

It’s about dealing with organizations hiring us to modernize their systems, but are driven by not rocking the boat of the current processes.

It’s about having to develop to the lowest common denominator. Again, because attention spans are short.
While I don't have direct experience teaching, it sounds a lot like being a public school teacher ...

i also don't like extending it much beyond even 10 or 12 because it makes the regular season less meaningful.

but... there's no way the ratings can drop. mathematically it would not go in that direction. more teams = more games = more money. it does somehow "devalue" the regular season, but it doesn't seem to get in the way with mlb, nba, nfl, nhl.

and with nil there's not going to be angst about letting college athletes endure more wear and tear.

so, as long as you don't drop more than something like 3 games in the regular season, and your roster isn't totally depleted, you're going to be in and able to make a run and earn more $$$.

and the more you let in the more it promotes the narrative of "make a run".

This current first round exposure of the non elite teams is no bueno for ratings in the long run. Now they will be able to get idiots like Herbie spewing 'Cinderella!!!" when one mediocre team beats 2-3 mediocre teams before they face a big boy.

Reflexivity of a sort.

Yeah this was inevitable once the playoffs started. I think FCS also has 24 teams.

I prefer 12 or 16 max, but nothing we can do about it. They’ll fuck around and if ratings drop they’ll go back to 12/16. Just have to let it run its course.

I'd place a fair wager they move to 16 in 2026. It doesn't matter what any of us think they should or shouldn't do. What do you think they will do?

A) stand pat/likely make the same amount of money
B) expand/likely make more money

I'm going to take what's behind door B any day of the week.

Everyone likes to support the idea that "we need change", until they're faced with the reality that that includes them changing as well, and not everybody else.

If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room.
The same might work putting "business" in place of "room". If you're the smartest person in your company, maybe you need a new company.

Deciding When to Retire

True story - I was on the road almost every other week for 35 years. When I first started seriously talking about retiring my wife didn't want me to. She said she wasn't sure she wanted me around that much. It would disturb all of her routines. A couple years later Covid hit and I wasn't allowed to travel most of the year. She found out it wasn't that bad having me at home. I retired early '21 and haven't regretted a day of it. It must be ok with my wife since she hasn't yet changed the locks. If I can make it until September it will be 50 years without her changing the locks.
