Well, maybe Ohio State wouldn't find itself in this situation if a few more people and businesses stopped acting like a bunch of jock-sniffing hicks and started acting like people in the big cities to whom Columbus is always trying to compare itself.
Bullshit. This has nothing to do with Columbus per se, and everything to do with people trying to get close to star athletes.

This happens everywhere.

Rece Davis had an excellent quote at the end of his piece: "If you can't control women's tennis, what can you control?"

In my opinion, this story is becoming more about the problem of boosters and hangers-on taking advantage of star collegians, and less about Ohio State per se. As it should be.

On planet Betterthanewe, the jocks they sniff are their own.

Speaking of fruitless searches, looks like there still isn't any real evidence of improper car deals, at least not yet. Hopefully that bodes well for the program.

It's about fucking time. This still doesn't take away from the way ESPN has dragged OSU and it's credibility through the mud now for the last 8-10 months.

Ray Small has established himself as a somewhat oversensitive athlete who never quite lived up to expectations - his own, his dad's, the fans'. That doesn't mean he's not credible, and certainly Mark Titus can't be accused of being not credible.

Football players at Ohio State in some cases received "impermissible benefits." I don't see how that can legitimately be argued otherwise. Even if this also happens at every school from USC to West Virginia Institute of Technology, we'll be excoriated for it, and we may become the scapegoat for NCAA violating practices that occur pretty much everywhere.

Leaders accept responsibility even when others go unpunished. I think we've done so, and I think we'll continue to do so. I hope Jim Tressel is not called upon to sacrifice his job for transgressions that occur in all D1 programs, but if he is I'll accept it.

But I'll accept it knowing that Paul Fucking Finebaum and his legion of mouth-breathing Crimson Fucking Tide faithful will continue to spread their false scripture of SEC supremacy, both athletic and moral. It may gall me now, but I'll live to see the smirks wiped permanently off of their smug, witless faces. Fuck Paul Finebaum, fuck the SEC, and frankly fuck the NCAA.

Agreed for the most part.

I do take exception with Titus. There are over a hundred football players compared to fifteen? hoopsters. A segment that large of the general population would produce many able to afford a nice ride, so I'm not so sure he would be accurate. I also didn't care for the "the basketball players got their shit legit, but the football players are assumed dirty" shit. I like titus, but that was poor form, in my imo.

Also, not saying Ray is lying, but if many are assuming the worst about JT, then I think Small has earned at least a little distrust of his word.

Look, I've heard stories about impermissible benefits received by football players at Duke in the late 1990s through 2000's.

These incompetents couldn't beat anyone. As a salesman friend of mine once said, "they couldn't sell snatch in a logging camp." But they got car deals, low rental rates on apartments, etc.

There's little doubt that, regardless of whether Small was one of the privileged, gridiron heroes at Ohio State have received "impermissible benefits" since Chic Harley roamed Ohio Stadium - and likely before that. No different from USC. No different from Alabama. No different from Michigan, Penn State, New Mexico, Cal State Santa Barbara, Mount Union, and Bemidgi State.

Having said all that, Titus was clearly intending to deflect attention from the basketball team, since they're his boys. He knows the football team is likely well and truly fucked, and would like Matta's crew to avoid the same scrutiny and punishment. Hard to blame him for that.

i agree with what Titus said for the most part...like i said right around the time the car dealership accusations broke i posted that i wasnt surprised in the least...i lived on campus and off it for 5 years from 2000-2005 and ive seen countless football players driving around in cars that they could no doubt not afford to be driving unless they had wealthy parents...james lauranitis comes to mind...but there were other players that i saw and wondered how the fuck they got the money to buy that car, along with the rims and system that came in it...im talking red shirt freshmen so spare me with the scholarship money talk...2 players in particular i know of who i read in interviews talking about their financial hardships in their upbringings had better cars then people who make 80K a year...so if i know of this shit going on i have to blame some of the coaches or whoevers job it is to of been monitoring this...unless these players never drove these cars to the woody hayes and kept them hidden from the coaches, OK...im not going to say it was all players and im not going to say there was a bigger percentage of those who had nice cars vs those who didnt....i didnt see every player beside their car at a Quaker Steak and Lube Car Show on a Friday...like i said before in this thread, i lived next door to shane olivea for 2 years and he had the biggest peice of shit blue buick century that i have ever seen...and he didnt even get a nice truck until he got drafted...but the fact of the matter is obviously this shit is going on...im not trying to say JT should ask every player for a financial history of their parents and interrogate them on how they got the finances for their car but if he has a general background of a kid who comes from a poor upbringing and sees them driving around in a pimped out 2010 Camaro then maybe someone should say something to that kid...its a shit situation and its something that has been going on for awhile...and i like many just turned the other cheek and paid no mind to the situation

1. Ray said "everyone". That's a flat out lie, whether an exageration or not.
2. I can blame Titus for that, and it's not hard. Though the football team aren't his "boys", he still didn't need to throw fuel on the fire. He didn't have to come out and defend them or lie to protect them, but to assume the worst about the football players while defending the bball team is a shitty move, that's all. I don't dislike the dude, I just thought it was a shitty thing to do.
3. I don't doubt for a second that athletes are and have been getting hooked up. That doesn't mean people that directly benefitted from the revenue football team provided (facilities..the Schott...just to name a couple) need or should be piling on at this time. Just let it be. It's not that hard to do.

That I agree with. He was, it seems clear, trying to excuse his own transgression by claiming "everyone" was doing it, when it was undoubtedly only a fraction. Whether the fraction was more like 10% or 40% is open to question - I'd bet closer to 10%, because I generally think the best of people.

I can tell you it's almost certainly less than 40%. Not that that is much of an encouragement.

There is no car scandle..........The only scandle right now is tress violated 10.1 by not coming forth when he was told three of his players were dealing with the Tatoo guy (which is no small issue).... The BMV came out and said Jack Maxton made money on those fucking car sales....everyone acts like there is some proven pay for play scheme going on and that has not at this point been part of the story...if anyone thinks the coaches are shady and setting up deals I think they watch to much 30 for 30. Players selling shit for chump change is one thing If Tress knew about former players selling shit (more so than the e mails) then there is more of an issue. Titus unknowingly fanned the flames by saying what he did with no facts or in his words "no inside info" but he did it and it rubbed people the wrong way beause it seemed like piling on from one of our own.

If some real shit comes out like Tress is arrainging this stuff....it will be so ridiculous that I will laugh in utter shock and be the first to say we need reemed.........I havnt seen anything that suggests this is the case.
