Again, I don't recall the need for police protection for the OSU alum and fan who turned in Troy. The Dispatch didn't see a need to hide the attorney's name in that situation. IMO it's an excuse that doesn't hold water especially when the identity of the concerned party is already known if the allegations are true.
yeah.....I replied before I got to page 21 of this thread. for some reason it seems to have gathered a little bit of attention.

Would be great if one of the BP insiders calms us down or gets us prepared for more.
I don't think anybody has much info. This appears to have come out of nowhere and I suspect the athletic department is being pretty guarded right now, so can't imagine much is getting out...

Another plausible scenario:

Jim Tressel is informed. He passes the information to Compliance. Complaince approaches the players and they lie. Compliance tries to dig further to corroborate the players or refute, and the feds say, "Stop. We're in the middle of our own investigation. You can do your thing when we tell you we're finished."

This is the best case scenario right here. If this actually happened it will make Yahoo and the "source" look like jackasses. It will also call for apologies. This my friend is the best case scenario. Any other way will just continue to make OSU look bad justifiably or not.

"Mike and Mike in the Morning" just responded to this story revolving Coach Tressel and the Bucks.

Greenburg read the story as written off of the site verbatim. He was VERY respectful enough to emphasize the word "may" citing that "the source comes from a single undisclosed person." He made this point clearly a couple times over. Goldberg was quite respectful as well.

They also bashed the "selling" rule and both said they hope this story isn't true.

Or C) you heard a vague rumor about something before 12/8/10 but didn't put much credence to it until you got more information, later on, from a more credible source.

The number of people who seem willing to assume the worst about Coach Tressel disappoints me. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but we've certainly become a cynical bunch.

If you didn't do anything at all you usually don't need to roll out the "it depends on what the definition if 'is' is" defense.

about what I'd expect from M&M.

Just an example. Right now we're all just guessing. Either this story has merit or it doesn't.

Tressel's history says it doesn't. Yahoo's history says it does.

If the story is accurate, then Tressel knows the identity of the "concerned person" because they supposedly had a conversation about the trinket sales. If the concerned person believed he was being stonewalled, why didn't that person or the source use the EthicsPoint Reporting System to involve compliance in conjunction with an outside auditor? And please spare me the "he/she may not have known of this reporting vehicle" because fans from other schools have been using this since it was originally established. Too many loose ends here, but one thing is certain - the facts will come out.

This is the first time I have seen it. If this person felt they were being stonewalled why would they go anywhere that has an OSU logo attached to it? The person might think this reporting line will get them nowhere as well.

I think it says something about the state of investigative journalism when outlets like ABC/ESPN, CBS, FOX, SI, The Sporting News, &c are all getting scooped by Yahoo! every four months for the next big CFB story.

I think Yahoo's story is probably right, I think the question is to what extent and the circumstances. Whether or not Tressel aknowledged and reported it to the compliance office or it was some email that ended up in his SPAM folder. It could be a hundred different things. I would hope those things would have come out in december in the NCAAs orginal investigation and the NCAA has already been through this and not found wrong doing. Thus much ado about nothing.

Esp(I)n local down here reported as gospel (btw one of the co-host grew up in NE Ohio). then UT mouth piece Chip Brown went on to say ( don't remember the exact quote but this is pretty close) "If you thought this stuff (referring to paying players etc) all started at Auburn and Oregon, think again it because it happened at Ohio State first (referring to the Mo Clarrett deal) and nothing happened to them." Went on to accuse us of paying Mo being dirty in general, also referring to the pay scandal at YSU while Tressel was there. The guy from Ohio said "Tressel's from the Youngstown area so you know he's got a layer of grease in there". I miss the days before the 24 hour news cycle, when journalist were journalist and not out for a quick buck or a headline.

Suppose the source came to Tressel and named a couple of players. Suppose the allegations were painted on with a broad brush such as Herby did when he named a guy(s) on National TV that had nothing to do with the issue (ala Mike Brewster). Suppose JT went to one of the guys like Brewster and he tells JT there is obsolutely nothing going on here with me. JT at that point drops the issue figuring somebody got their information wrong. If that is the case then he did investigate and found nothing. I would hope he would go to more than one guy and perhaps he did but in the long run all we have at this point is speculation.....
I read all the time that we need to "Trust the coaches".....
This is one of those times......although it does trouble me that we don't have a statement from OSU yet at this point regarding the allegations....

How many e-mails does Jim Tressel get a day? 500-1500...I bet its ridiculous. They want to hang him because someone e-mailed him? GMAFB.

If the source is a former player or big time Alumn then maybe theres some validity...but if the source is Joe Schmoe with the smoking gun then they are on crack.

They are asking for phone records and e-mails so that means they don't have the evidence just a source.
