WR Ray Small (official thread)

Code:
http://mb15.scout.com/fohiostatefrm2.showMessage?topicID=19712.topic

Poster claims Ray did not pass the SAT.

He didn't and this has been known for a few weeks so that is not new information. But he is supposedly in class already. Sounds like OSU is just a little bit pregnant with Ray.

As I said before, clear as mud...

Above all, I hope that it all works out for RS. I hope he stays with tOSU. Always root for the kid.

Partially correct...

Anyways, just talked to someone pretty close to the situation. Things between admissions and JT/Small are not too smooth right now, and from what I hear JT is quite upset over the whole matter. Things are still up in the air...and conversations on the matter are ongoing.

WTF is it with admissions?

I thought I would add (so that nobody thought Ray is all but done in terms of OSU) that I think Ray ends up a Buckeye in the end. Just a feeling, so lets keep our fingers crossed.

They can't rubber stamp every bluechip prospect.
APR is the Athletic Department's benchmark. This does not demand that every athelte graduate. Though that is a noble goal, it is realsitic to state that less than 100% graduation is accepted, nay codified by the NCAA.

As for admissions, they can in fact "rubber-stamp" anyone they so choose, and block anyone they so choose. Anyone.

If their concern is academics there are plenty of examples of NCAA qualified athletes who would presently face difficulty as incoming recruits, yet did finish their degrees. Someone called Troy was not exactly lighting up the GPA scorecards with 4.0's - but look what he has done with his chance.

All JT (I think and hope) and (I think) the majority of this board are saying is give Small a ray of hope.

But then..."The final question mark for Small appears to be an ACT score that he is still waiting on, but he said he will be a Buckeye regardless of the score."

This brings up an ACT score, not an SAT score. which one did he take?
and if Ray said it didn't matter what the score was going to be, then I would think he must have been told that by Admissions. Who else's word would he have taken on something like that? And who else would have known whether or not it mattered, but Admissions?

Again why would he be asked to retake a test that didn't matter??? My guess is that he bombed it pretty bad. It sounds like the communication paths between the coaches and admissions were not in sync with him. That is unfortunate, but since I have no idea what the full story is I will reserve judgement.

If for whatever reasons he did not meet admissions he should be not be admitted.

If he was told he was cleared then found out later that he wasn't then there might need to be some special consideration. I would hate to see a kid get screwed because the coaches and admissions can not get on the same page.

In the end I hope the admissions/coaches get in sync... this problem has been ongoing for several years now. FIX IT!!! I also hope Ray realized how important academics are and succeeds in the class room wherever he ends up.

Thread on the Iowa boards saying RS is going to be a Hawkeye. I am sure that people are just leaving their options open, it is the smart thing to do.

I have said it before and I will say it again, this has ugly written all over it.

If he's already enrolled at OSU like some have said, then it becomes an in-conference transfer if he goes to Iowa, and he becomes another John Kerr, i.e., can't be on scholarship. That would suck.
