WR Michael "Cantguardmike" Thomas (B1G Champion, National Champion, Pro Bowl, All-Pro, 2019 OPOY)

I expect a few WRs will earn their starting spot after spring ball. I expect the rest to rotate in and out the first half of the season next year. We didn't see very much rotation this year because depth was still an issue and we were heavily committed to the run game. This all changes next year. Apparently Mike is confident in his ability to earn significant playing time. I am glad to hear that.
Not sure why our commitment to the run would change next year. We replace four OL which does not favor pass protection. We will still have a strong running game with more experienced Elliot and Wilson, along with Smith, Dunn, et al. We longer have a seasoned QB off the bench who can be relied upon in the passing game and our starting QB has yet to demonstrate that he can be trusted to put the ball in the middle of the field. But the kid can flat run.

IMO our strength will still be the read option.

I just hope it isn't Brax with the "predetermine option"

Of course we run next year but with Carlos, the OL we had this year, and the lack of depth/talent at WR you would have to think the staff was sold early on to run much more. I expect the WR core to be very good next year. C Smith will come in and remind everyone what a real WR looks like IMO. With a rebuilt OL and lots of weapons at WR I simply expect more production throwing it next year.

i would posit that osu will work hard to call plays to get the ball out of braxton's hands in quick fashion to help protect him until they gain more confidence in the OL. i think in a perfect world, osu would like to see something akin to troy smith 2006, with a slightly more dynamic qb running component. the problem is that osu has yet to see anything from the wr core that would be able to facilitate that.

You would expect that, but I fail to see anything from Braxton to provide hope that the receivers will get the ball when they come open. Braxton is not a solid passer. He throws the ball well, but he does not throw it on time. It is almost always late. That tells me he does not see the field well or have the knack to see when a receiver is coming open. He always seems to see it too late. Awesome talent, but he often lacks the heady play. Perhaps earlier this year when Urban said we are starting to see his ceiling, he may have realized Brax is just not the solid passer Urban had hoped he would develop into.

The only way we can expect more production from the passing game, is if Braxton can progress more as a passer, make better short-intermediate throws, and work on his touch. Which all can be done. Im for rotating in and out all of the WRs, until we find someone consistent. There's really no one now that has set himself apart that's returning as a starter. The young guys better be ready to be called upon early and often or we will see a repeat of this season in the passing game

Cbus-buck, you practically said similar points to me while I was writing. I totally agree

Yeah, it's over the top, but I have to say that our receiving group hasn't been overly impressive. Not dynamic. Some of that is on Braxton, but much of that is simply the receivers.
It's borderline bashing imo. No one is claiming they're world beaters, but they're real. I'm certain they exist. It would seem that their backups aren't any better or they'd be playing. That, or Urban lied when he said "if you don't play as a freshman here, it's because you're not good enough, not because we're holding you back", or close enough to that.

Yeah, I am not sure what or who the answer is here. But I hope one way or another we find more explosiveness in next years receivers.

Timing is clearly an issue but consider option number 3, he doesn't trust the receivers routes. If (and there are many better than I that could determine) the receivers are running bad routes consistently how could a QB throw the ball before a break, it would be interception central.

I'd take the Braxton we've seen the last few years over 90% of the other qb's out there and that's considering the others only in their prime year(s).

We will just agree to disagree on this. Philly did a good job of getting open all year and often times didn't get the ball thrown to him or got it thrown late. Also I see a QB that doesn't make the hot read when there is a blitz on.

Alas we are hi-jacking a thread about Michael Thomas for this discussion so I digress.

Watkins and Bryant's play should've had all is Osu fans drooling because we have just as much talent in our WR corps as well, but just need to find the right combination

None of the current WRs are anywhere close to Sammy Watkins or Martavis Bryant, IMO. You can come up with any 'combination' you want with our current WRs & I'd still take Watkins & Bryant.

He can say what he wants so long as he can back it up on the field.
It's not like he was talking smack about how he'd steamroll another team, such as FSU or Alabama. Or about no-fly zones.
From an analytical POV, he's hit the nail on the head.
If the 2 returning starters are offended by his comments more than by their own performance [shrugs]
