Not sure how many ways it can be phrased... but I'll try another:

Before this season (as SD & I are referencing), Dungy was 5-8 in the postseason, losing every "big game" in the playoffs.

Maybe Marty was quicker at choking in the playoffs, but Dungy was not very different in that regard.
What are you asking? So Dungy had just as many wins and 5 less losses? Right or wrong Manning was the one that usually took the blame for Indy's failure not Dungy. Did you hear Tony finally got his ring? No, you heard Manning finally won the big one. Would you like to address how four 12+ win teams all find a way to lose their 1st play-off game? Team changed, players changed, one thing remained constant. Martyball. Not sure how else to phrase his postseason failure...

They should have given him another year. Having Rivers, a first-year quarterback, doesn't mix well with wanting to win it all. Give him one or two more years and then you have a different story...

Don't tell that to the "win now" crowd. Apparently, Phillip Rivers should have been able to go all the way in what was essentially his rookie year.

And think about this....

Now Rivers, a developing QB but a seemingly one with the talent to be a good one, will have to adapt to a coaching change and a coaching philosophy change.

Good luck San Diego, you've got LT so you're good for at least 10 wins I think, but Rivers, being young and inexperienced, is going to take some time to get back up to speed.

I think that age had as big a reason as anything else in this whole situation. The playoff loss was just a reason to move on and find a long-term answer. Marty's what, 63? I'm sure they see a window that is probably about two more years before LT starts to decline and their current crop of stars start getting plucked in free agency. Now they are able to go out and get a young, enthusiastic coach (ala Sean Payton) that can get them there while that window is still open. Just my take on it...

I can see both sides of this one. Marty's teams in Cleveland were right there, and got hit with some bad luck and with John Elway, one of the best ever. On the flip side, his teams in KC just flat out choked in the playoffs...and choked huge, considering KC is supposed to be one of (if not the) best home fields in the playoffs, and they lost those games at home. SD, well, that could be interpreted either way. In any event, in additon to his age, you hear a lot these days about the "window of opportunity" in the league, due to injuries and free agency...the management of the Chargers obviously felt that they should be contending for a SB with LDT and their defense over the next 3 years, and they don't think Marty is the guy to get them to the Super Bowl, so they made a change. Time will tell if that was the right move or not. Maybe they have a candidate in mind who they think is ripe for the picking, who knows? Marty won a lot of games in San Diego, but he clashed with the front office and couldn't win a playoff game this year or the last time they were in either. Was it a great move? I doubt it, nor do I think it was a terrible one either.

Piss on Marty, and to hell with the Chargers. Any team with a player that people insist on referring to as "LT" can fuck off.

And for NFBuck, whats with the sig? "Thank You Seniors, Gonzo, Ted, Antonio"? What exactly was Gonzo this year? A 4th year Junior? Don't think so.

Huh? Unless my memory has completely failed me, Gonzo had a year of eligibilty left on the football field....

Hrm.... Well this does not bode well for the Chargers to be honest. The period in between Bobby Ross and Marty wasn't a nice experience. The thing that bothers me the most is why wait? Why wait til there's no one available and both of your coordinators are gone?

Do I think Rivers days are numbered? Remember, Marty wanted Brees and AJ Smith wanted Philip Rivers, not the other way around. So I think Rivers is fine, I just don't think the Chargers as a team are going to be in a good spot next year.

Go from 14-2, the odds on favorite to win it all next year to firing your coach.

Bleh, this sucks.

As you can probably guess, I have been all over this story today. So as best I can guess the idea that A.J. Smith had was "we have all the parts in place, let's see if we can make another run at this." However, with Cam and Wade leaving that left large holes in the puzzle, pieces that Marty would have to fill. However, if Marty is more than likely gone next year, do we want him filling those positions?

Here's the statement from Dean Spanos:

Today I made an extremely difficult decision: Marty Schottenheimer is no longer the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.

This decision was so hard because Marty has been both a friend and valued coach of our team. But my first obligation is always to do what is in the best interest of our fans and the entire Charger organization. I must take whatever steps are necessary to deliver a Super Bowl trophy to San Diego. Events of the last month have now convinced me that it is not possible for our organization to function at a championship level under the current structure. On the contrary, and in the plainest possible language, we have a dysfunctional situation here. Today I am resolving that situation once and for all.

My decision means that our organization will be obligated to pay the last year of Marty Schottenheimer?s contract and will begin an intense search for a new head coach at this relatively late date, but these are sacrifices that I believe are necessary to give the Chargers the best possible chance to win on the field this season.

Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month. When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007.

It's a bit of a shocker to be honest, I was sick all weekend and found all of this out this morning. Now there's so many questions and I feel the timing couldn't be worse. With College coaches all finalizing their recruiting classes and most big name NFL coaches having either been picked up or retired all together, how desirable does this job become? A better question, with the team in turmoil, what can we expect next season?

This job strangely went from potentially best job in the NFL to "dealing with an overbearing GM" in a matter of 24 hours.

Man, he's saying thank you to the seniors as well as the players who left early, i.e. Gonzo, Ted Ginn, and Antonio Pittman.

Don't expect many big names in Chargers' search

As we saw in the Miami and Dallas coaching searches, don't expect many big names. Dolphins coach Wayne Huizenga tried to make a splash when he visited USC coach Pete Carroll while he was on vacation in Costa Rica, but that didn't amount to anything more than just an interesting job interview. Expect the Chargers to hire an NFL assistant, preferably with some head coaching experience.

Continued...
Sigh, AJ Smith better have a sure thing in mind... (Why do I get this feeling that next year is going to be a bad one? :()
