Sigh, AJ Smith better have a sure thing in mind... (Why do I get this feeling that next year is going to be a bad one? :()
barring injuries there is no reason to think S.D. will have a bad year. If you go 9-7 and win a play-off game, the new coach already accomplished more than Marty did while there....:wink2:

I wouldn't have fired him, but I would have made sure that the new coordinators were guys who could be good head coach candidates 1-2 years down the road. The time to fire him was right away before Dallas hired Wade Phillips away, because Phillips would be the natural successor. Now is kind of a bad time to be in the market for a HC because the best candidates have been picked over by other teams.

I apologize to NFBuck for being a dickhead last night, but the bottom line is that Gonzo is a graduating "Senior." He isn't graduating early, he's simply a senior who had one year of eligibility left if he chose to exercise it. Again, I apologize for the offensive nature in which I presented my point.

No biggie. The reason I included him seperately was because he was a "junior" on the football field.

Chargers receive permission to interview 4 candidates

SAN DIEGO -- The Chargers received permission Tuesday to
interview four candidates to replace fired head coach Marty
Schottenheimer, including one-time San Diego offensive coordinator
Norv Turner.

Norv Turner - I liked him when he was in SD, even if we had better days when he left. He did put together a nice defense, even when we were a serious loser he managed to at least keep the games in reach.

Mike Singletary - Hrm, I don't know what my thoughts are on him, however, if he's the assistant in S.F. that doesn't say a lot of good things for him :(

Ron Rivera - To me this looks like one of the better picks, no one can really say anything negative about the Bears Defense, the offense may have sucked but the Defense played hard and they all seemed to get along.

Rex Ryan - Another decent pick in my opinion.

I see the Chargers are trying to build more around their defense and I guess that's cool, however that was the path they followed when Junior Seau was there and that didn't work out well for them.

I just hope whoever comes in realizes the weapons he has on both sides of the field, this year Cam seemed to forget that Gates was there for a good portion of the season and it frustrated me, even though we were winning it's not a good thing to have the best Tight End in the NFL going entire games without catching a ball.

When his name pops up on coaching searches, I often hear/read that he's well respected around the league. So don't hold SF against him (Turner did a nice job grooming Smith up there).

I would say Singletary wouldn't let guys like Merriman stray to far from the path in the future either. The guy knows defense and SD has a lot of that. I could see Mike down there. He would definitely have to bring in a good up and coming OC to make a huge difference imo.

Just give the ball to Tomlinson as many times as you can and play great defense. Sounds like a playoff strategy to me. Now that I think about it, where do I apply at?

If we had done that in the playoffs we might have a ring right now :smash:

There's a reason for my paranoia, I posted this in another thread but it pertains to the discussion so I will re-post it here.

Well, historically, teams have not improved once Marty has left, below are the winning percentages.

Browns 4 years with Schottenheimer: 40-23 (.634)
Browns 4 years after Schottenheimer: 25-38-1 (.390)

Chiefs 9 years with Schottenheimer: 101-58 (.635)
Chiefs 7 years after Schottenheimer: 60-52 (.535)

Redskins 1 year with Schottenheimer: 8-8 (.500)
Redskins 1 year after Schottenheimer: 7-9 (.437)

Chargers 5 years with Schottenheimer: 47-33 (.587)

As you can see, Marty's curse seems to go beyond the playoffs, he haunts teams after they finally axe him it would seem :(

Also, if you look at the numbers between Bobby Ross and Marty it's not very impressive, remember that Ross took the Chargers to the Superbowl so the team was a good team, nothing spectacular, but a qualtiy team, yet in the period between they were 23-57, and hadn't broken the .500 record since the year after they went to the Superbowl, in fact these numbers are generous if you consider that in that time they hadn't been able to win a game were they trailed at the half :( One last note, the last time San Diego won a playoff game (1994) they went to the Superbowl, that's a pretty long drought.

As noted again and again, even if they land a solid HC they are still short to coordinators. While it may seem like there are many options (promoting from within or hiring someone) I don't think there are that many valuable coaches out there who can step in and continue the success. Sure LT helps but Rivers is far from being a franchise QB and he will need some solid grooming to improve.

They obviously have the talent but IMO the GM made a big mistake by firing Marty this late in the game because of personality issues. Especially given his success.
