Just like Tony Dungy, huh?
:slappy: horrible comparison. How many teams has Marty taken to the play-offs and failed? How many consecutive play-off games have Marty-led teams lost? How many times has a Marty-led team had the best record in the NFL entering the play-offs and flopped? I suppose all that is just a big coincidence........

I might get flamed for this, but I do not see how a coach can win big games during the regular season, then all of the sudden coach terribly in the playoffs. I believe if you lead a team to a 14-3 season in the AFC you are a good coach.

when you change your strategy that was winning games to a new more conservative strategy in the play-offs causing your team to lose that is not smart. I think Marty is a fine coach, but I wouldn't want him on my sideline during the "big game". He has lost too many of them in a row for it to be considered a fluke.

This is understandable, and if this is true so be it, I just don't understand why he would do that. It is just a hard topic to prove due to all the other variables involved.

Did the strategy kill them? Or their team constantly helping NE out with mistakes? (First down via INT fumble... 3rd down out of FG range before headbutt... not the catching punt, then not falling on it).

here is my proof, 5-13. That is his play-off record. Winning % around what %28ish.

not kicking the FG before halftime? I'm not basing this off just one year, it is consistent w/ Marty. Is anyone that unlucky every single year? I say no.

Marty isn't a world beater, but I still find it quite stupid that they would fire him.

As for Dungy being a terrible comparison, here are Dungy's postseason wins (per year) from 97-05:

1, 0*, 1, 0, 0, 0, 2, 1, 0 (* - missed playoffs)

Bullshit. It's a fair comparison. NEWSFLASH Coach Halas: Winning a championship isn't easy. Ask Don Shula. Ask Bill Cowher. Ask ... yes.... Tony Dungy. How many people though Dungy and Manning couldn't win a title?

The Chargers have been getting very good, practically elite over the last couple of years. They've fallen short in the playoffs despite high expectations. Sound the Colts to me...

There are 30 teams in the NFL. Only one of them can win it. I think Marty's done a damn fine job of leading a team into the hunt. Apparently, he outdid himself by making his team the favorite.

they can't be elite, they haven't won a play-off game since Marty has been in S.D. I guess that would be considered falling short......

Unless you're the Patriots, you don't just waltz into the playoffs and start winning titles. For the most part, there's a hump to get over. Until this past year, should the Steelers have fired Cowher? Or the Colts Dungy?

They are the same situation.

Cowher was 12-9 in the playoffs, Dungy is 9-8, Marty is 5-13. If Marty is still trying to get over the hump there is a problem. It isn't just winning SB's but he doesn't win play-off games period. The last 4 teams Marty took to the play-offs were all teams that won at least 12 games in the regular season. Guess how many of those 12+ win teams won their first play-off game? If you guessed none you would be correct. Actually he has lost his last 5 post season games, he is actually regressing as far as the play-offs are concerned.

Not sure how many ways it can be phrased... but I'll try another:

Before this season (as SD & I are referencing), Dungy was 5-8 in the postseason, losing every "big game" in the playoffs.

Maybe Marty was quicker at choking in the playoffs, but Dungy was not very different in that regard.

I really like Marty as a coach, but I think at this point its impossible to argue that he is a bomb in the playoffs. I think he's a role-coach. As in, he's great at building a solid football team but he's not very good at taking the team to the next level after that.
Anyway, I'd take him back in Cleveland in a heartbeat ... right now it's a project organization, and I think Marty is the kind of guy that can build a program out of crap. But of course the chances of that happening aren't very good at all. So I'll just say good luck to Marty wherever he may find himself.
