tOSU is tied for 18th in total team sacks, tops in B1G:
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/466

Eventually, teams might realize that Shazier has been blitzing and handle it better.

26.0 tOSU total sacks

6.0 noah spence
4.0 ryan shazier
3.0 michael bennett
3.0 steve miller
2.0 joey bosa
2.0 curtis grant
2.0 jamal marcus
1.5 chase farris
1.5 adolphus washington
1.0 chris carter

Interestingly.. Joshua Perry has no sacks. I thought he would be better than he is. He just hasn't developed into the player the Bucks need him to be. I had high hopes for Josh since he is the only player from my old High School Olentangy to receive a scholarship to the tOSU football program.
He is just a Soph so he still has time.

The tOSU rush defense looked horrible today in comparison to the MSU defense. That's what's wrong with the tOSU defense. Turrible!!!!!!!!!!

Michigan was sacked seven times and finished with minus-48 yards rushing, the worst output in the Ann Arbor program's lengthy history.

Purdue had +27 yards rushing, by my calculations.

I realize the convo has moved on, but the Spartans gave up twice as many yards to Purdue athome a few weeks ago, winning only 14-0 thanks to a fourth quarter score.

I don't think the results at Purdue say anything other than that Ohio State had an inferior opponent on their hands and the defense dominated them - which otherwise wouldn't be worth noting except for the fact that they gave up points and yards to inferior teams earlier in the year - so definite improvement in that sense. Penn State was more impressive in the sense that Hackenburg had passed on a lot of people. On the whole, I need to see more.

It would have been real interesting to be in on the defensive coaches' discussion prior to the Penn State game. We know that Vrabel called them out for being soft, but these are basically the same guys that have been out there all year. There has definitely been a more aggressive approach with more pressure and tighter coverage. Did these guys finally progress to the point where the coaches could increase pressure with tight coverage, or did the coaches just decide to do it? Regardless, they look like the unit we expected to see. We need to see them do it consistently against good offenses, but I'm not sure the schedule affords us that opportunity.

To Steve's point: I think we will kill MSU if that is who is in Indy. I acknowledge their defense. It is very, very good. It can limit Ohio State, but I do not think it can stop them. OSU has too many weapons: Brax, Hyde, Wilson, recievers, TE's. They can't take away all of it - which is the beauty of what Urban/Herman are doing. I doubt Sparty's offense could score 10 points on us. They would need defensive and special teams scores to help them - and we would need to turn the ball over to them a ton. I'm sure they will want to knock Brax out of the game, but that would bring KG on the scene. In other words, Sparty would need a whole lot to go just right to beat Ohio State - unless our defense reverts back to a mediocre state, but even then, we have to remember that Jim Bollman is involved in their offensive game planning. Ohio State's defensive game plan: stop Dave. :chest:

Exactly why Urban likes Mike Vrabel, because Vrabes likes the more aggressive Silver Bullet defense. Urban wants an attacking aggressive defense and Vrabel is of the same mindset.

Who is this Shazier you speak of?

Indiana is no powerhouse, but they are proficient at passing - and that's been the thorn in our side. I'm looking to that game, more than ttun or a prospective MSU, to see if everything has truly been fixed.
Even so, I'm happy that they're playing more aggressive. While it was a weak opponent, it looked like Perry was taking better coverage positions in general. Before he seemed to either be way too close to the line (jumping the run), or out in no-mans land. I hope he gets healthy soon!
Agreed on MSU - their mediocre offense will make our defense look great. We've shut down a lot better backs than Langford, and I just can't see Cook effectively slinging it 30 times against us. I can't see them getting more than a handful of first downs unless they go away from Dave. As awesome as their defense is, I think Brax & company would still get ~30 points.

SIAP. Advanced stats:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/11/4/5064170/ohio-state-football-2013-braxton-miller

For the season (not including the Purdue game), Ohio State ranked just 36th in Def. F/+; the Buckeyes have stopped the run pretty well (19th in Rushing S&P+) but have struggled against the pass (63rd in Passing S&P+, 49th in Passing Downs S&P+). Teeing off on Penn State and Purdue doesn't tell us everything we need to know, but the fact is, Ohio State did tee off on Penn State's Christian Hackenberg and Purdue's poor Danny Etling. They brought these two quarterbacks down 10 times in 62 pass attempts, and when Hackenberg or Etling actually completed a pass, they averaged just eight yards per completion. This was complete and total devastation. The options for Penn State and Purdue were either a) run for six to eight yards on first and second down before failing on third down or b) just go ahead and fail on first down.

Again, Penn State and Purdue aren't exactly UCLA and Stanford (Oregon's last and next opponents). But Ohio State has known all along that it is doomed to terrible computer rankings because of an awful schedule. While the Buckeyes wait to see if a couple of the fantastic teams above them lose, all they can do is look the part. And for the first time since Meyer moved to Columbus, they truly are.

Good enough is fine; after all, it's good enough. But Ohio State has begun to look great. Can they keep it up over the next month? And does it even matter?

I am a little confused but what is new. Saturday evening while watching a Buckeye post game show Matt Finkes said that the reason that the defense has improved is because they had become more aggressive and he contributed that to Withers and Fickell. He said that both of them approached Urban and told him that they want to be more aggressive. I always thought that Urban told both of them to become more aggressive. I do not know and that is why I am confused. It would seem like Finkes would have some insight into the football program but I do not know that for sure either.

I think Finkes is a little dislexic. I catch him bungling quotes and such often on that show.. it's like he is a deer in the headlights eveytime he is on. Not sure what you can take from his comments, but I do know that it was printed in the Dispatch weeks ago that Urban wanted an agressive attacking defense and felt our defense was not getting the job done in that way. I saw that in the paper in written form.
