Not really sure where I compared us to Alabama or even made reference to them. Didn't call us non-elite either. I was just saying that it appears that the Buckeye fan base has gone from "THE SKY IS FALLING" to "EVERYTHING IS FIXED SO LOOK OUT WORLD" with regards to our defense. I'm still in the "show me more" camp because throwing two freshmen QB's to the curb isn't enough for me.

You didn't have to bring up Alabama, I did to prove a point. We played 2 teams that most see as average, as did Alabama, yet their defense is seen as great all year and ours isn't. I see both as very good, and Osu's is playing at a very high level at the best part of the year.

Who sees Purdue as average?
I'm with Yertle (awww - crap!). Show me that Ohio State can hold Indiana to 20. I'll be happy with 30.
I'll admit that I was in the "EVERYBODY SUCKS" camp. But then, at halftime of the Iowa game, something clicked on. I consider Iowa's offense "average", though, at best. Penn State - average, at best. Purdue - no flipping way. I hope that the defense really has kicked in, and we hold Indiana to 10 points, or something, shut out Michigan, and hold Michigan State to about 7. But I think that's more optimism than I like to have.

True, but at least the defense took a weak offense and didn't allow them to get close to scoring. That does say something. They stopped giving up the big plays so much. Tackling has improved. But can the backs cover good recievers now, that is the big question. Will Joshua Perry improve on his performance from last game? These are the questions that need answered.

Did you just call Purdue "average"???? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the laugh.

Well semantics aside, his point stands. Replace "average" with "[Mark May]ty".

I respectfully disagree that it's a valid point. Alabama has given up 95 points in 9 games, and 42 of them are in one game. And that team is one of the top offenses in the nation with the reigning hiesman winner. Ohio State has given up 153 points in 9 games, which includes 34 points to a ONE WIN CAL TEAM and 30 points to a winless NW team in the conference. To suggest that we are on par with Alabama's defense after beating PSU and Purdue (hell, even Cal could beat Purdue) is just showing off our level of homerness.

Still don't believe me? Ask yourself honestly "how many points would PSU score against Bama"? The answer is zero, and you know it.

Bottom line, the sky wasn't falling earlier in the year, and we're not as awesome as we think we are now. The truth is someplace in between. At least that's my current take. Now, if the Bucks shut down Indiana, I'll eat my helping of crow and admit we are awesome. I'd be happy to.

I didn't mean that Purdue was avergae,my point is that they were as bad as UK and that's a sec team that alabama played. We're not the best defense in the country, but were very good at this point in the season and that matters more than gow we started. But IU will be a barometer of how far we've come

I think they'd score about the same as they did against our first team.
You have a point, but PSU isn't really making it for you... should have stuck with Cal. Though honestly, Cal's been able to pass the ball on everyone -- what's killed them is turnovers. If anything I think the point could be even better made with Ole Miss. I don't think our defense could shut Ole Miss out.

Depends, do we get to use an ole miss defector to steal their plays?

According to Ole Miss' own staff in July, they changed everything after he left. So while I'm sure he was able to provide a lot of helpful insight (see Stoops quote below), it would appear he wasn't stealing signals.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/19/s...e-tempo-saban-remains-a-step-ahead.html?_r=1&

“Everything will be changed with the offense. You have to change things when you lose somebody like that.”

....

“Those guys are so darned creative and sophisticated it is very hard to pick up those hand signals and steal those, especially at the tempo they are going with,” Stoops said. “But the operation of the offense, the tendencies and the substitution pattern, you can learn a lot from somebody who has been on the staff.

“You watch an up-tempo team, and they run certain plays toward their bench so they can substitute much faster. There are certain areas of the field where they can do things to their advantage. If you know that, it helps.”

Bo Wallace, the Mississippi quarterback, was on spring break when he learned Siskey was leaving for Alabama. Wallace said that there was no traditional playbook for the Rebels’ no-huddle offense but that they “wouldn’t have let him get out of the office with it if there was.”

Wallace added, “We’re still working on changing things.”

....

“You look at it as just another challenge,” Freeze said. “Certainly it’s not something we wanted to happen, but we’ve got to move on, and we can’t use that as a woe-is-me type mentality. We have to make adjustments and move on. That’s what coaching is about anyway.

“I needed to change things anyway. It pushed me to go ahead and do it.”

Those quotes are from July... stating that they've changed everything.
The likelihood of him stealing signals is very close to 0. I don't doubt he was able to assist Alabama; I just don't see how he could have read their plays.

well i was gonna go show some stats to argue that the score on that game is an abberation and it is for Ole Miss, but I didnt actually realize how bad Bama's schedule is. they havent played an offense with a pulse outside of aggie and to a lesser degree LSU. I stand by my belief. you dont have him up in that box with binocular unless you think you can steal something worth stealing.

As Stoops pointed out, there's ways he can assist 'Bama w/o stealing their playcalls. Recognizing their tendencies with substitution patterns, knowing what plays they run when they want to change personnel, etc.
I think there's no debate that he helped Alabama to a significant degree in preparation and during gametime, I just don't buy that help came in the form of stealing signals when the Coach and Quarterback are quoted as saying they changed it months beforehand.
