I think the problem is pretty clear: just a plain lack of talent/depth in the back 7, especially at the S position. Injuries, poor recruiting by the previous regime and the high number of transfers have all combined to make for a pretty disastrous situation. I am not the biggest fan of LF, but it's hard to fault the scheme/coaching when the two-deep is this bad and the first two UFM recruiting classes are still getting acclimated to the college game. Is this a championship defense right now? No way. Do I believe it will be in a year or two when some of the new guys develop? Absolutely.

In the meantime, we are just going to have to hope the offense continues to operate like a buzzsaw.

I was severely disappointed by the defensive performance yesterday precisely because I expected Stanford to lose and Baylor to win big. In my opinion, Alabama will not make it through the season undefeated. Free Shoes and Baylor probably will. Ohio State might, although a game against MSU looks like much more of a challenge than I once thought.

I'd prefer to have Alabama over either of the others, in part because of the SEC team myth, but more because I like the matchup with our defense better.

Thing is, I really don't think that things will work out for a NC game run after that defensive performance yesterday. Here's why.

My guess is that Ohio State will fall on the computers, which include metrics related to that poor defensive showing and discount late touchdowns from leading teams. What is not clear to me is how much the Stanford loss will hurt teams that they have played or what happens if Auburn beats Alabama. Oregon's loss to Stanford looks worse. Miami's loss yesterday also provides further evidence of their being vastly over-rated (with apologies to ESPiN facial merkin model Mark May). Wisconsin's systematic desctruction of Indiana yesterday and the crap-fest between TSUN and NW also will not help their power ratings for our remaining games. It would seem to hang on a B1G championship game against Michigan State, who would not have allowed those long rushing TD's yesterday.

So, to me, Ohio State's defense really needs to pull together and play lights out for four more games, if Ohio State is going to have any chance of being National Champions.

If the team that played yesterday shows up in any of the remaining games, then I really don't think it matters at all. I would be very surprised if they don't show up again.

It's very apparent that we need Bosa's pass rush is desperately needed, but the LBer play was not very good outside of shazier. Braxton's struggles in the passing game throu the wind didn't allow us to put the game out of hand. Michigan state gave up only 3 points to the Illinois offense. We won't be tested until MSU but that leaky performance against Illinois isn't very encouraging in our bid to try and reach the title game.

I'm not really worried about the MSU offense. I feel their defense will give us a nice test, which I am looking forward to see how our offense performs against a great defense. But we'd really have to shit the bed for MSUs offense to rack up 35 on us. As bad as our defense is, I don't think it's Husker bad.

Personally, I would rather see us win the rose bowl than lose another national title. It is a pretty big step up to go from Oregon to Bama.

FFS it is not. Bama is not the gold pumpkin standard man. Sure they would probably beat Oregon but anyone who plays a certain style of football can do that. Bama deserves credit for what they've done, but acting like it would be any harder to beat them this year than any other top team is just silly.

I don't think they are as good as people make them out to be, but they are a big step up from Oregon. I feel great matching up against Oregon, provided our LB corps can continue to improve and are healthy. They played poorly yesterday, but they also weren't our starters. Perry has made some good improvements. Oregon won't be able to stop our offense, they haven't seen anything like it. They don't have the size to stop Hyde, which opens up our passing game. Bama on the other hand could slow down our inside running game and force us to throw.

After watching Bama last night I am now down to FSU as the only team that I think Ohio State would have a really tough time competing with. I'm not saying that Ohio State would beat Alabama, but they didn't look like a powerhouse last night. I do worry about the Ohio State defense lapsing against a team like Oregon. Indiana should (if they show up) give us a poor man's preview of what matching up against Oregon would look like.

In other words, the defense really needs to get their shit together. The offense, with Mr. Hyde, can play with anyone.

Baylor will probably jump us today. But it's the VOTERS that really matter, and beating MSU would, IMO, get OSU back over them. I also think that OK ST will beat Baylor just because teams that haven't been there before generally pucker up at some point.

I can't judge Bama for their 'bad game' just like I can't judge us all that much for last night. The guys played uninspired. In a national title, both coaches will have their team pumped and playing their best. Therefore we would get from Bama what we saw against LSU. They would get our performance against Wisconsin or Penn State. Where the team was pumped up. That's why I feel good against Oregon. Their performance against Stanford was giving it their all, and it isn't enough against a physical line.

I still think if you line up 1-10 in each conference the Big Ten is better than the Big 12, worst case it's a draw. But I cant argue about giving Baylor winning out the nod over us, because of their round-robin schedule. They play everyone in the conference, and we miss a couple of the 'better' teams, like Minnesota and Nebraska. Though we do play one more game. I will like it when we add 1 more conference game next year, and go back to having the one marquee game. Losing the marquee game the last few years has hurt, and they need to do a better job of ensuring that it isn't a team that could drop off so much. Cal was kind of risky. Teams like Oklahoma, USC, Texas have highs and lows, but are much safer. Even Oregon is risky, they could very quickly fall off to nothing.
