If our defense keeps up its stellar play, the rest of the schedule doesn't have a chance(not like it had much of one before). Both sides of the ball playing lights out.

Not to be a debbie-downer, but from what I was watching the Purdue receivers were often still wide open. Luckily, Spence, Bennett, Washington and Bosa got enough pressure on Etling to prevent him from hitting them.

The problem I have, is that when we're playing Bama or Stanford or anyone else with a competent OL, we can only expect to get penetration every handful of snaps or so. Leaving receivers wide open and relying on the opposing QB to mess up is NOT going to cut it against another Top 5 opponent.

The tOSU rush defense looked horrible today in comparison to the MSU defense. That's what's wrong with the tOSU defense. Turrible!!!!!!!!!!

Michigan was sacked seven times and finished with minus-48 yards rushing, the worst output in the Ann Arbor program's lengthy history.

Purdue had +27 yards rushing, by my calculations.

What's wrong with this defense? It has not been holding up its share of the bargain. It has been slacking.

The bullets are now 9th in the country in total defense, whereas the offense is now 8th in the country in total offense. Better balance is needed please.

Illinois might help balance it out, but there is a stiff test coming with Indiana.

The defense has improved but I really think the change in philosophy has enabled the improvement. They look less worried to make mistakes and are being much more aggressive. I also noted the open receiver this week and against PSU that Etling/Hackenburg just missed, but I think some of the misthrows were caused by our constant pressure. Get a QB out of their rhythm and they make mistakes...the games before PSU, the QBs were comfortable and hitting the open man. Even against a really sorry opponent, this is the type of performance we need from our defense.

It looks like a "pattern" . Last year we were playing soft. Urban told the defensive coaches to "get aggressive" and when we did we got better. Same thing this year. And the LBers are learning and getting better in pass coverage.

I think a change in philosophy has helped a lot, but it still seems to be a compound issue to me. The scheme was perhaps over-compensating for lack of top-end talent, and deciding that we'll play to our strengths and "deal with" our limitations as they occur has yielded better results. However, it would seem those limitations still exist.
We also put a blank up against FAMU. Purdue in their current state isn't a better measuring stick.
I do like what the coaches have done with the scheme and things seem to be progressing.
I guess I'm waiting for Indiana before declaring the issue resolved.

The defense was playing without confidence or swagger if you will. I think the past two tune ups have helped them get a little bit of that back. The defensive line is playing really good football. Imagine if AW was completely healthy.

And they'll have another bye and two more tune ups to prepare for the offensive juggernauts of Michigan and (probably) Michigan St.

Sorry. Tried typing that with a straight face and couldn't do it.
