OHIO STATE'S ATTENTION TO RELOADING ITS DEFENSIVE LINE APPARENT IN 2018 RECRUITING

83095_h.jpg,qitok=kLbLStVX.pagespeed.ce.XchiNnnX6A.jpg

Ohio State signed three defensive linemen in its most recent recruiting class. It already has that many committed for its next one.

The Buckeyes inked 5-star end Chase Young and 4-star tackles Haskell Garrett and Jerron Cage in February. The three of them arrived on campus three weeks ago with the rest of the members of the 2017 class that didn't enroll early.

The number of big bodies Larry Johnson and Ohio State sign in eight months could at the very least double the output of the past cycle, purely out of necessity. And the Buckeyes know it, as evidenced by their actions on the recruiting trail.

A quick peek at the current roster and scholarship grid reveals four seniors on Ohio State's defensive line entering the 2017 football season. Reigning Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes are at end while Tracy Sprinkle and Mike Hill play tackle. The names that could be gone by this time next year don't stop there, however.

Redshirt junior Sam Hubbard is a prime candidate to leave school after this season and enter the NFL Draft. Hubbard, who is in line to start opposite of Lewis at end and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten last year, is on track to graduate this fall. As long as he stays healthy and remains productive under Johnson's eye, there won't be much left for him to do in college provided Ohio State is in the College Football Playoff discussion as expected.

Two other redshirt juniors — tackle Dylan Thompson and end Darius Slade — might also find themselves on the outside looking in after the 2017 season. Injuries have halted their progress, and with such a deep backload of defensive line talent to work with, the chance Johnson taps them for snaps in key moments this coming season do not look too high.

Add it all up and there is four names for sure gone, another (Hubbard) likely gone, and two other wild cards that could end up moving on after the season. With that in mind, it might concern fans that Johnson "only" has three defensive linemen — tackle Taron Vincent and ends Brenton Cox and Andrew Chatfield — as June nears its end. Those fans shouldn't panic. There is still a long way to go, and Johnson has plenty of irons in the fire with recruits.

Scholarship offer for a nine-year-old? Nevada says sure, why not

OK, this might be getting a little bit ridiculous. Check that — this is getting ridiculous.

Earlier this year, Lane Kiffin, long the king of way-too-early offers, further buttressed that reputation earlier this month when, just weeks after offering the seventh-grade son of Tee Martin, the Florida Atlantic head coach offered a scholarship to a quarterback who had just completed the sixth grade. Earlier this month, Hawaii one-upped Kiffin by offering an 11-year-old who just completed the fifth grade.

At the time, we wrote, “Surely there’s not an offer to a kid still in elementary school in the offing.”

Nevada football: Hold my beer…

Recruiting discussion: I'm saying it is just a publicity stunt; however, below what age is it just plain ridiculous to offer a football scholarship to a kid?

This was somehow missed as well, probably because Illinois is hot garbage

Offering kids this young is an absolute joke. The NCAA should certainly step in and do something about this. Especially since this offers mean next to nothing, the last thing you want to do is get a kids hopes up, and then when he starts to decline in HS, pull the rug out from under him. Kind of like the kid that was offered by USC in 8th grade a while back.

OSU is having an amazing recruiting class, and I don't see them letting up for a while. But for those who want to see more Ohioans, don't hold your breath...
But on the bright side, it's encouraging to see that a number of the local players that may not get OSU offers, due to the national approach, seem to be VERY interesting in playing for Fickell at UC

BREAKING DOWN OHIO STATE'S EARLY DEFENSIVE HAUL IN ITS 2018 RECRUITING CLASS

83291_h.jpg,qitok=_i-cPALZ.pagespeed.ce.adE7tBk1NJ.jpg

It’s only the first week of July and Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class is already shaping up to be one of the best in program history. The Buckeyes have 14 verbal commitments and the nation’s No. 1-ranked class.

But a closer look at Ohio State’s haul shows us this class — right now — is a little bit defensive heavy. And the Buckeyes could be on the verge of building a monster on the defensive side of the ball with its 2018 group.

Eight of the Buckeyes’ 14 commits are on defense and they’ve hit every position group already. More potential defensive stars will come, too, as Ohio State is not even close to done adding top-flight talent to this group.

What follows is a position-by-position breakdown on defense highlighting who is already in the fold and who the Buckeyes are still targeting to add in the 2018 class.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Committed: Taron Vincent, Brenton Cox, Andrew Chatfield

Still targeting: Tyreke Smith, Micah Parsons, Jayson Oweh, Nesta Silvera, others

Breakdown: Ohio State is prepared to take a large defensive line haul in 2018 with the departures it will have from Larry Johnson's meeting room following this season. The Buckeyes are already off to a great start in replacing that talent with three commitments up front — two of which are five-star prospects.

Taron Vincent is a five-star defensive tackle and Brenton Cox is a five-star at defensive end and both have the potential to be cornerstones for Ohio State when they arrive on campus. Andrew Chatfield is a four-star hybrid end who seems to have a high ceiling.

The Buckeyes aren't done, though. They are widely considered the leader for four-star defensive end Tyreke Smith and they're also heavily involved with five-star end Micah Parsons and four stars Jayson Oweh and Nesta Silvera.

Expect Ohio State to take at least five defensive linemen in this class and there's still a chance that number could jump to six if it's the right player.

HEAT CHECK: BUCKEYES' 2018 RECRUITING CLASS POISED FOR YET ANOTHER BIG MONTH FOLLOWING JUNE'S COMMITMENT BARRAGE

83284_h.jpg,qitok=yS2XCy-S.pagespeed.ce.hILA-um_W5.jpg

Recruiting is all about momentum. Sometimes you're gaining it, sometimes you're losing it. What prospects are trending up with Ohio State? Let's take a look.

Happy Independence Day, ladies and gents. Hopefully your day has been filled with sunshine, family, brisket, and all things Merica.

Ohio State's 2018 recruiting class produced some early fireworks in June as four new commitments helped to temporarily push the Buckeyes ahead of the Hurricanes for the top spot in the team rankings. The battle for the top spot will wage on into July, and don't be surprised if Ohio State takes the lead again despite Miami already having a whopping 19 pledges.

Urban Meyer's class is up to 14 commitments and is expected to end up somewhere in the ballpark of 23-25 signees. The 2018 haul has a chance to not only put an end to Alabama's reign atop the team rankings, but it could potentially go down as the highest-rated class of all time.

July brings with it Friday Night Lights, which is always one of the premier recruiting events of the year. There are still a number of prospects on commitment watch, and July is shaping up to be yet another huge month for Urban Meyer and Co.

Andrew Chatfield, Teradja Mitchell, Master Teague, and Matthew Jones all made their intentions know in June. Four new commitments – and a whole lot of activity around the country – brings some big changes to our 2018 recruiting board.

Odds are that the Buckeyes will miss out on at least one of the above targets, and a de-commitment or two is always possible. On the other hand, the Buckeyes are also in the running for several other top prospects whom I did not include above (CB Tyson Campbell; OT Nicholas Petit-Frere; LB Solomon Tuliaupupu; DB Houston Griffith; DT Nesta Silvera; and LB Michael Harris to name a few).

If the Buckeyes signed the 25-man class above, it would have a class ranking of 323.35, which would just miss being the best of all time (Florida's Class of 2010 had a ranking of 323.66).

The average star ranking would be: 4.16

The average player ranking would be: .9511

Not too bad :biggrin2:
Drop both Brown's and an unfortunate decommit from a DB/CB and replace w/ CB Tyson Campbell; OT Nicholas Petit-Frere; DT Nesta Silvera

Why is there so much confidence with Petit Frere and Silvera?
I think Campbell is the only realistic option out of the 3 you mentioned. And replace Cameron Brown with Ruckert
