tOSU Recruiting Discussion

The coaches whiffed on Wimbush, Nunez and Gibson in '15 after whiffing on DeShaun Watson, Kyle Allen and Brandon Harris in '14.

I also realize now that I should have put the QB thing in the 2016 discussion thread.
Agreed. I'm not saying I dislike any of our qb commits the last few years, but we have whiffed on all of the most elite hs quarterbacks. Haven't pulled in a Braxton miller type guy since Braxton. And Braxton (though I love the guys character and love watching him play) hasn't become a truly elite college quarterback. I think we need truly great quarterback play before we get that elite recruit. Then watching tebow bomb in the nfl didn't help Urbans case. Until we get a qb that performs elite we will get 3 and 4 star qbs with great character that need a little work. Hey, it hasn't hurt Bama or lsu.

Regardless of rankings, I look to see who the staff went after first and not so much the "elite" guys per the rankings. In 2013, J.T. Barrett was at/near the top of the board. Braxton in 2011 was obviously the top choice. Taylor Graham was near the top of our board in 2010 and of course TP was tops in 2008. The other recent years with Burrows, Collier, Cardale, and Guiton were all backups after we whiffed on other guys (no indictment on any of them, look how KG turned out and I've already said how much I like Burrows). Seems every other year roughly we get our top guy, so not too shabby. But I think in 2016 there is no doubt we are going to get a guy at the top of our initial board.

I'm not saying I dislike Collier or Burrow either. I think they both fit the system, are natural leaders, and have the potential to be great QBs at Ohio State.

However, that doesn't change the fact that the coaches clearly missed their top targets at QB the past two recruiting cycles.

Henry and Pass both list OSU as their leader right now, but the coaches were in a similar position with Wimbush and Nunez at a similar time last year.

We will see what happens. I think OSU gets one of their top choices at QB in '16 between the players currently being discussed but they will halt a two year streak if/when they do that.

Another factor in play is that the '16 QB class seems significantly stronger than the past two years and there are more "top" options that have emerged early.

A possible D line haul of Jones, Cornell, Sweat, Gallimore and DeBerry to go with a LB class of Conner, Hilliard and Baker. YES, Please! Hard for anyone to have predicted a haul like that, and would cement our front 7 for some years, first with great depth then some becoming superstars in their own right. This defensive class is certainly coming around.

I'm going to go ahead and update my prediction for the 2015 class with the recent scuttlebutt (and yes, this will be another top 5 class...this is assuming we have 23 spots):

QB: Joe Burrows
RB: LJ Scott (MSU is going to give us all we can handle here though, not as confident as I was before)
RB: Damien Harris (personally I think it would be a miracle if anyone pulled him from us, especially after Cornell and Hilliard pull the trigger)
WR: Van Jefferson (pulls the trigger for us before the season)
WR: Christian Kirk (A&M will be tough but I think we win out...really tight with our hopefully prospective commits)
Pivot:
Eric Glover-Williams (I like him on offense, too explosive to play D)
TE: Nobody (I would not mind having Josh Moore at all but I'm not sure where we stand...always possible for Clark to come back in the final hour...I also really like DeAndre McNeal)
OL:
Grant Schmidt
OL: Kevin Feder
OL: Matthew Burrell (think we are trending well here and might need to warm up the nanners soon)
OL: James Daniels (just a hunch but I think he wants to stay in Ohio...if not, maybe Jurkovich)
OL: Drew Richmond (least confident of anyone on the list here...we were high up but I have not heard much here lately...I also think this spot could easily go to Pat Allen, Connor Dyer, Andre James, or Isaiah Prince)
DE/DT:
Dre'Mont Jones
DE/DT: Jashon Cornell (might as well shade his name with light red)
DE: Josh Sweat (this is more of a wish since he is playing it tight to the vest but with UFM/LJ Sr. putting on full court press, I love our odds)
DT: Neville Gallimore (I know we are in the thick of it but this again is more of a wish than a well informed prediction...really hoping we get him, absolute beast...if not, maybe Wilkins)
LB:
Nick Conner
LB: Justin Hilliard (again, light red...he will be the ringleader in this class)
LB:
Jerome Baker (will announce soon and it is no secret where he is going...big time potential at LB)
DB:
Jamel Dean
DB: Tyler Green
DB: Denzel Ward
DB: Rashad Roundtree (my darkhorse pick but I think we get him in the last hour ala Vonn Bell...you make room for Roundtree regardless)
ATH: Nyheim Hines
LS:
Liam McCullough

Uhhh, love where RB07's going with this, and would be extremely happy with the recruits named. Not particularly concerned whether they're 3, 4, 5 or 6* recruits. However, not sure where the 24 or so recruits fit into a 15 limit class. Maybe I'm missing something, or a couple of juniors (like Spence ) are going early, but 9 more than spots we have? Not sure I'm buying it. Any thoughts on this? Please help me clear the fog away. Go Bucks!

The only juniors I see leaving at all are Spence and Washington, which would give us 17 available schollies for the 2015 class. We usually have a transfer or two, which could up the number to 18-19. Unless UFM doesn't renew a current player's scholarship, we'll be lucky to get 20.

With that said, I think we end up at 20-21. I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 2 more of our juniors have a hell of a season and leave, putting us at 18, and 2-3 transfers. I'm guessing we'll see 20-21 in the class.
