tOSU Recruiting Discussion

If Juju is ok playing safety and that is where he projects then I want him more than Thomas. I love D Line guys but I want to see some more studs at safety.

The best coaches, especially throughout the sec, win in the trenches and more specifically on the d line with a great pass rush. Urban destroyed in 2006 with a great pass rush from DEs, and that's one of the biggest reasons the sec has been so dominant winning NCs. I'd prefer Thomas, but in my greed want both. Starting S of vonn bell and juju in the future would be phenonmenal. But a d line of Thomas, bosa, Michael hill , and jalyn Holmes would be tremendous.

We aren't going to be having these Thomas vs. JuJu dilemmas. They are both guys that will be in if they want in. Spots are open and the staff is being selective with "offers" but not with "OFFERS." We are obviously going full bore on both and will take both. Now if we are envisioning a hypothetical wish list, I would rate JuJu higher...as big of a stickler as I am on DL, I think we are pretty set there and Thomas is just gravy (elite gravy). But we need an elite safety in this class that can be ready to contribute.

There is no guarantee that Thompson comes back healthy as the player he came in as, Bell appears to have some development to do (not so worried on him though), and it could be that Apple, Burrows, and Conley are all corners or nickel players. There is obviously potential in both Worley and Lee, but either could outgrow the position into a LB. Of course this is all hypothetical and if these aforementioned freshmen are as good as billed, there will not be much to worry about. However, I think JuJu is a true playmaking safety that can contribute right away if need be. On the other hand, we know Bosa is legit, Hill showed promise, Diesel (if healthy) and Spence are fantastic, Schutt is a solid DT, Bennett should be back along with Hale, Marcus is a terror off the edge, and Farris looks good out there. Plus there is always the possibility Carter breaks through. I just see more of an immediate need at safety. However, I think we get Thomas and we will battle it out for JuJu and hopefully come out on top.

Immediate impact is almost too cliche too use on incoming frosh. Last I remember, vonn bell was also a ready to contribute 5star S as well. S is a difficult position to just come in an play, as they all are. But you mentioned a number of young d linemen that have seen immediate success. IMO, Thomas adding depth and then moving into a starter position would be awesome. And an elite pass rush, IMO can always trump S coverage. Look at how much better our defense is playing now that our d line is attacking, it has forced QBs into turnovers by pressure. And Thomas could provide that. No knock on juju, because I love his game too, but I think thAt Powell, bell, Worley, tanner, and even thompson(if we believe that Kyle Berger can come back from his injury, I feel the same about thompson). Not to mention we also have incoming depth of Malik hooker and possibly Lonnie Johnson. Neither has the talent of juju, but I think all 3 would be mostly special teams players in their first year and play spot up duty. Juju is very good, but IMO not better than vonn bell in HS, and vonn has had to fight for PT.

Curious if someone could tell me which 2014 commits are enrolling early? I believe Raekwon and Mavety are both planning on enrolling early. If we landed them it would be absolutely huge to get them in right away considering how important it is to develop depth at those positions. Which, btw is certainly a selling point to both.

I know QB Collier is also planning on enrolling early.

RB and I are thinking the same. I absolutely LOVE an elite D Line. Love it, love it, love it. But we just have more proven depth there right now and we have seen first hand with Bosa (I know he is a freak though) that guys can come in and make an impact on the D Line quicker whereas safety requires more time in a program in my opinion. There just seems to me that there is more to learn with that position. I think Bosa was far more ready to play physically and mentally than Bell so this skews my point somewhat but with a longer learning curve and less depth at safety I just would rather have an elite safety in this class than another elite D Lineman. Look at our weakness this year, it's in the secondary not the D Line and to further my point everyone is coming back on the D Line where we are losing impact guys in the secondary.

I know the staff with fit in both but numbers are going to be tight. I think we close out recruiting with absolute studs. I'll put it this way, if we are solid with Raekwon, Smith and Lattimore and we only have 6 total spots left give me Mavety/Prince, Holley and Juju/Blanding flip/suprise like Jamal Adams (OL,DT,S) and if we can fit 7 in the class I'd prefer another OL (Mavety or Prince) and if we can't land that 6th on the OLine then I would want Solomon Thomas. I wouldn't pass on Thomas for any other OL prospect just to fill a body as my 6th OL prospect but I would for Mavety/Prince and I definetly would for an elite safety. That's why I wasn't totally disapointed in missing out on Gesecki. Creates the opportunity to land an elite guy in the trenches, either ST or a 6th OL like described and makes it easier to land another safety to go along with Smith. Obviously this is completely spoiled talk anyway as our class is already sick but it's Urban's fault. He is the one that makes these dream scenarios plausible.

I think it's personally fun that we can even have these discussions about having a realistic shot at such elite players. How we end this class is becoming more and more exciting as the days pass and the season continues. As we keep winning, I see more recruits from all over the country taking looks at us. Not only is this class filling holes on the o line, LB, etc were also getting some great depth at WR, d line and cb. My previous posts may seem like I want Thomas more, but I'd greatly want juju. Kid is just a stud. I don't want to stir anything, but.... We should pay attention to the lonnie Johnson situation....

With the Holley info coming out it made me realize I was short sided in saying I wanted Holley in my group of 6. Not sure what I was thinking. I will be more than happy to have a better D Lineman in his place if that is what :urban2::vrabel:are up to

I would love to see Peppers flip, just for the meltdown.

Agreed 1, 000%!
But peppers seems like a kid who'd use this year as motivation. Pure hoke guy who probably thinks he can make things diffrrent. Don't see us flipping him. But would like mcdowell. Also would like to flip drake harris. ScUM can have the rest
