Heismans are fine, in the sense that they picked the criteria and stuck with it, and that there is a small number...though I'm not sure it warrants retirement, really. Chic, of course, is in a class by himself, given his era. After that though, it gets real dicey, if we are going to have any numbers left to give to people. Hicks would be before Pace, and there are still people who say Jim Parker was the greatest college player they ever saw. Besides, kids want to wear their number when they get to college...the more famous ones you retire, the less likely that will be.

Personally, given the number of players on a team, I think they should have a "Ring of Honor" type thing around the stadium, without actually retiring the numbers.

I agree that they need to do something with the ring on C-Deck, that way the Woody sign they have there doesn't look nearly as awkward there by itself. Either use it as space to list team accomplishments, or distinguished past Buckeye greats.

Not to get too far off subject but it would also be nice to see a more elaborate dedication done to Woody. He really needs a bronze statue or something placed in the Buckeye Grove, perhaps even a mini memorial placed near Lane avenue infront of the Jesse Owen memorial.

I read or saw somewhere that when interviewed, a man who had seen Red grange, Chic harley and some guy from U. of Chicago all play. Said whoever from Chicago was first closey followed by Harley, and Grange couldn't hold Harley jockstrap.

Heisman Winners only. There are just too many greats at tOSU. If you retire spielman you have to retire Cousineau. If you retire Pace, than you have to give Hicks a sign too. I think Pace is the only Heisman winner that could be done, he was that good. Started everygame, having the pancake stat invented because of him, rose bowl win, #1 pick in the NFL draft (has since become a pro-bowler), and a heisman finalist.

However, only hesimans should be retired to save numbers. There are a shit load of 2 time all-americans too so maybe retire 3-time all americans...

i cant believe Hawk is better than Cousineau, i know you cant compare era's per say but take a look at some of his numbers, unreal. I think he had like 5 or 6 20 tackle games and he holds the tackle record by a HUGE margin

no need to make a case, as mili said, it's a guarantee if you win a heisman.

santonio holmes is 5x the WR that rambo was. One of the greats at LB cannot be 5x better than another great at LB.

i understand where your coming from however i think your statement held true until cooper let Kat where 45. Cooper should of not let that happen.. but when you think about it what coach would tell their biggest recruit no to a number that wasnt retired. If chris wells wanted to wear 45 and it wasnt retired tressel wouldnt say no.

Thats where winning a Heisman should give a player the recognition of never having another buckeye wear your number, not to mention having your name hung next to that number never to be wore again in the shoe.

I agree with this one. Maybe continue retiring the number of any Heisman winners, but institute the "Ring of Honor" to pay tribute to all the greats who've worn the scarlet & gray.

Not enough numbers and stadium not big enough

Let's face it, the available numbers would never do justice nor would the size of the stadium to the number of great players at all of the different positions over the many years of tOSU football. This is really a somewhat ridiculous argument. Names are being thrown around like baseballs at an extra-inning MLB game. There are too many...Speilman, Cousineau, Gradishar, Hawk etc. at linebacker alone. Secondary guys like Tatum, Doss, Fox etc. then lineman and throw in the obvious skill position guys...arguments could go on all day. What would you do with a guy like Art Schlicter? How about Cornelius Greene? Guys who don't have phenomenal stats but played huge roles for more than one year are far too numerous and would only cause greater problems and heartache for former players wondering why there number or name has not been honored.:oh: :io: :oh: :io:
