Heismans are fine, in the sense that they picked the criteria and stuck with it, and that there is a small number...though I'm not sure it warrants retirement, really. Chic, of course, is in a class by himself, given his era. After that though, it gets real dicey, if we are going to have any numbers left to give to people. Hicks would be before Pace, and there are still people who say Jim Parker was the greatest college player they ever saw. Besides, kids want to wear their number when they get to college...the more famous ones you retire, the less likely that will be.
Personally, given the number of players on a team, I think they should have a "Ring of Honor" type thing around the stadium, without actually retiring the numbers.
