I think it depends on the situation. If a player has made a SUSTAINED contribution to the program, then I say yes. On the flipside, if he is a one year wonder (which is rare, but not impossible for a Heisman winner) or doesn't necessarily have SUSTAINED success, then I say no. I think you also have to look at the success of the program during his tenure (which is usually, but not always taken care of in the Heisman voting). If Troy were to continue to build on his current record (2 wins over scUM), the team makes a nice run next year, and he wins the Heisman (which I think is a long shot, as much as I love the guy) then I would say yes, retire the #10 at some point. Just my opinion.
im not trying to bring up bad blood or anything but this too is my opinion on your opinion.
If Ginn were to win the heisman, that i say yes retire his number. he has contributed to the success of our program and won us games.
The same could be said about Smith, but according to what you said earlier, you stated "sustained contribution to the program" by taking money from the booster, he did not sustain his contribution to the program, but rather hurt it and its image. smith is a great player and i hope him all the success in the world. since the little incident, he has dedicated himself to the program and the university. when you think of what all the other players to have their numbers retired have done, would it really be fair to put troy up there with them?
In all seriousness, do you guys agree?
Me, I personaly think they should retire Nugent's #85. I know the retiring of a kicker's number never happens(to my knowledge) in college football. He may have not won the Heisman, but he did contribute alot to the program. He won us many games. Think of how many kickers hold the school record for most points in a career with over 350 points. How many kickers were named MVP for their team.(I believe he was named MVP by the team, is that right?)
As we know, Ohio State only retires numbers of former Heisman winners. With the exception of Chic Harley since the Heisman wasn't around then...Here's my question, say a player like Troy Smith wins the Heisman next year, in five years should his #10 be retired? What if its Ted Ginn, does that mean that his #7 should be retired?
This would be very cool if done right... and would highlight our tradition at #7 (green, galloway, germaine, gamble, ginn)I really don't like the idea of retiring numbers at this level. I've always been of the opinion though that "honoring" a number would be a cool thing to do. What I mean is, post a banner of a # and under it put the name of the player. At present, I would suggest banners of the #'s of the Heisman winners and of Harley.
