Retiring Numbers (Merged)

I'm glad you brought this up:

1. I'm not for retiring any numbers at the college level. To me, this retiring of Heisman winners is dumb. For instance, Orlando Pace was easily as great, as dominant, and as classy as anyone to ever lace 'em up for the Scarlet & Gray. His career at OSU was probably better as a whole than Eddie's (for example), but # 75 won't be going up to the rafters anytime soon. There are many, many great players who played at this university, and to ignore them in this fashion is almost a slap in the face.

2. College teams dress over 100 players for some games. They need all the numbers they can get.

3. I think (at most) one or two numbers should be semi-retired for truly great and very decorated Buckeyes. The Archie Griffin - Andy Katzenmoyer situation is the best way to handle it, IMO. Archie was a two time Heisman winner, so you have to honor his number and accomplishments to the University. But, when another great player (who wants to wear # 45) comes along, let him wear it. Its an honor.

I think scUM does a good job with this when it comes to the # 1. Its probably the most recognized number they have, and when the next great WR comes along, he gets to wear it. # 7 is becoming like that for OSU: Joey Galloway to Joe Germaine to Chris Gamble to Teddy Ginn. I wouldn't mind if OSU does that same thing with the # 45 or something.

4. I've always thought the Bucks did a bad job of honoring the past great players in and around the Horseshoe. Retiring numbers really isn't the way to go, but they should do something. I wouldn't mind seeing a Chris Spielman statue outside the 'Shoe as you walk in the main entrance, or something of a "Ring of Honor" or "Monument Park" type thing in the Stadium.

no, not really. how would you propose that we re-retire the same number?

That seems pretty easy to me. Goofy, but easy. Simply put another "retired number plaque dealy" up there next to the others. It would say Hawk 47. It would look silly to see Harley 47 and Hawk 47, but that's how to re-retire the same number.

I like the retiring numbers deal. But I'm getting annoyed with the double numbers thing. Maybe they need to either start letting the players include letters in their 2-digit number. (i.e. maybe next year Schoenhoft will be number R4.)

[There's no sarcasm font, so I'll just hope people can imagine the sarcasm.]

I'm kinda liking Sloopy's idea. Except I don't know that it's a good idea to erect a statue to everyone that anyone considers "great." But maybe some kind of fancy plaque with the guy's picture and when he played for Ohio State, and personal information on it. All the plaques can be in some monument near the stadium. I'd like to see some limits to it, making it extremely honorable to be inducted into the memorial (simply being all-american won't get a player in). Maybe make the rule that only 2 people per year can be inducted, or something.

For a tribute to Pace, they should just start serving pancakes or "Pace Pancakes" at the concessions...He pretty much invented the use of that term in football, and what better tribute for a big man than naming a food after him...

I don't think they should have a statue for all the great players. Maybe like 2 or 3 that strike a certain chord, and some kind of Monument Park inside or outside the Stadium that has plaques or tributes to all the great players that is more comprehensive.

Should tOSU retire any more numbers?

well, they got all the Heisman winners plus Harley, the "father" of Ohio Stadium
Should that be it? Personally, I think Orlando Pace should get it. He was one of the THE best in college football history, let alone OSU history. The only reason he didn't win a Heisman, but Eddie did was because of the positions they played. And Eddie is not even close to being the greatest player at his position like Pace is. the fact that Orlando managed to finish #4 in the Heisman race speaks to how great he was...
And I don't buy the "he didn't stay 4 years argument." Pace would have been a fool to stay for his senior year.

[sarcasm]Sure, why don't we do like the wolfpack and reitre all the "all americans" that come through[/sarcasm]

There wouldn't be any #'s left. While I loved watching OPaace play too, I like the way it is being done now.

If someone is going to be next, it should be Jim Parker.

I think retiring all the Heismans was kind of silly. Eddie had a great year, but he isn't even close to being one of the top 5 ever at Ohio State. Pace, Parker, Tatum should have had their numbers retired before Eddie should have ever had his retired. Heck, I'd retire #47 before #27.

John Hicks finished second in the Heisman, also playing offensive tackle. And Jim Parker may deserve it as much as those two. If they start retiring numbers for those guys, they'll run out of numbers.

edit - I'll merge this.

Id be hard to retire Pace's number without doing the same for John Hicks, or Jack Tatum, or Chris Spielman. Really if you get the ball rolling on retiring jerseys for non-Heisman winners, it'll be hard to stop.

I don't think the NFL HoF should have anything to do w/ OSU retirement-Archie, and the Heisman winners before him didn't have great NFL careers-it's about what you do as a Buckeye, not what you do in the NFL. This is OSU-retirement of a jersey should be tougher than at East Carolina or Akron, or wherever elese.....Also, I agree about not retiring a # unless you win a Heisman-you gotta draw the line somewhere-and manage to sneak AJ Hawk in there too!

Ohio State does not officially retire any numbers. They may not issue one out of respect, but they never retire one. Here is an exerpt from an Andy Katzenmoyer article.

"Consider what Andy endured as a freshman pushing his way into the starting lineup on a team dominated by upperclassmen -- and him wearing two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin's No. 45 at that. Although Ohio State does not retire numbers, 45 had not been issued since Griffin's senior season of 1975"

have you been asleep for the past 3 years?
