Retiring Numbers (Merged)

I honestly don't think that Troy should be excluded from having his # retired just because of the incident he had with the boosters. If Troy beats Michigan again and in the style he normally does (300+ total yards of offense) and wins the heisman trophy next year, possibly carrying us to a NC, then I say retire his # the very next season.

What Troy has accomplished at tOSU so far is undoubtley amazing and I don't think that his "minor" infraction should hold him from having his # retired.

If I remember correctly, they have to wait five years after the player's career ends.

I know someone already mentioned this.

But in front of the stadium make a sort of walk-of-fame that honors all the great numbers that have player here. They have gave OSU and the fans everything out on that field, why don't we give the something in reward.

I also feel they should retire Spielman's 36. Setting a guidline of only former Heisman winners pretty much excludes all defensive players.

After thinking about it, I've decided I shouldn't have posted what I did.
So, nevermind.

Yes, I think they should retire the numbers of anyone who wins the heisman.

I'm against retiring a number simply because a player wins the Heisman. Winning the Heisman Trophy is simply the minimum qualification for consideration of having your number retired. There are many other factors to consider, such as how you've represented your school in areas other than football. None of our players who have had their numbers retired were ever suspended. In my mind, Troy Smith destroyed any chance of having his number retired the instant the booster money touched his hand.

This point along with the point about Torretta show that it depends on the player. I don't necessarily think that Troy is per se disqualified. If he turns in a heisman campaign next year and we win the NC, I think that may be enough.

but the five year rule allows you time to reflect on a player's college career. You sort of take the "i know it when i see it" approach like with the hall of fame in football. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

We had a punter that was a 3-time All-America in the 70's - Tom Skladany.

Thanks for remembering him. He was awesome on and off the field, a decent and good person by any description who treated everyone as he expected to be treated.

As much as I admire Tom, I wouldn't retire his number. I think the Heisman should be a minimum criteria and after that, we will all know. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...

I'm really kind of against Retiring numbers... especially in College...

You've got, what? 100 Guys on the Roster? In a hundred years you're going to have 30 numbers retired and 23 guys will have to wear "91"

Look... I'm pretty much all for retiring a Jersey with the players name and number... why make it so kids can't wear the number again... shouldn't they want to have that honor? Make them earn it (think scUM and 1)... who wouldnt' want to wear, 45 or 47 or even 7?

If I'm correct, if a player wishes to wear a retired number, he can get permission from the player, or if the player has already passed, the player's family. If he gets the go, then he can wear it.
