Retiring Numbers (Merged)

From what I've heard, the thing a player needs to have his # retired is a Heisman Trophy.

That's because with the group that is, they are people whose numbers they wanted to retire, and it was a pretty small number. Had there been other considerations, the criteria for selection may have been different when they started.

Here's my 2¢
cents.gif
worth:

Since the players are "student" athletes I always thought that the decision to retire their number should be based on athletic and academic accomplishments (i.e. If they didn't graduate they don't get their number retired.). In addition, their degree and year should be annotated in the corner of the banner/sign. If a player leaves early (no problem); however, he/she must can come back and complete his/her degree requirements (after their pro career is over and/or in the off season, etc.) before his/her number can be considered for retirement.

This isn't unreasonable since:

1. The university's athletic program is graded on the number of athletes graduating.
2. The athletes are "role models" and this demonstrates the importance that the athlete placed on an education to the youngsters that look up to him/her, etc.

Sense we all seem to be donating $.02, I'll do my part...

I am fairly sure that a player needs to meet two criteria:

1. Be in good standing with the university - as Zurp pointed out, this is the magical line that gives the OSU the ability to make up their owns minds about who gets retired.
2. Graduated - I didn't see this mentioned any where before in this thread, but I'm almost 100% sure that this is a requirement for getting your number retired as a Buckeye. I don't think it needs to be a graduate of OSU (in case of a transfer), but the player still needs a degree. Personally, I REALLY like this rule. How stupid would it be to hang a bunch of names and numbers of players who never made it through their college courses? The player doesn't even have an alma matter, but he has his number retired??? Obviously, this rules Pace out. Don't get me wrong, Pace was (still is) an incredible Buckeye, but he does not deserve to get his number retired.

A couple things wrong with what you just said.

The number was not retired when Big Kat wore it, and he asked Archie permission to wear it. Even though it wasn't retired.

Plus if Wells wanted to wear it, and he asked Archie, I'm sure Archie would let him wear it.
TG re-read my post, i said it wasnt retired and i said if wells wanted it and it wasnt retired he would get it..

The 45 jersey was not worn.. i wonder if woody even offered that jersey when players were picking their numbers? No one wore it because it's archie's, and when it was worn it was with his permission.. but even if archie didnt want 45 worn by any other buckeye, he wouldnt say no to a young man wanting to wear it. I also believe he asked cooper first, but i may be wrong.. point is Kat shouldnt of worn 45, and coaches and former players (especially a player like archie who's a great all around human being) would never turn a player down however numbers like 45, 27, 31, 22, 47, and 40 should be retired. Anyway you twist it, IMO, all the great buckeyes over the last 100 years and these are the only 4 players to win the heisman(granted it wasnt around earlier) and chic's number hangs there because he was so good they built a stadium for him.

IMO, retiring numbers shows a HUGE amount of respect for Eddie, Archie, Hopalong, Janowicz, Horvath and Harley being able to hang up there across from Woody. I believe they have earned a right to have there names immortalized in the shoe.

I just want to add. In no way was I saying that I would want MoC # retired. I was just wondering what everyone else thought.
Retire it for what? Half a season, on a national title team, and a freshman rushing title? He should hang next to Archie and Woody... fuck that. Was MoC good yea...was he one of the all-time greats...we'll never no.
EDIT: TG05, just read your first post on MoC...disregaurd everything above, but here's a question..what if Troy wins the Heisman and he goes and fucks up real bad in the next few years before its "retired?"

John Hicks finished second in the Heisman, also playing offensive tackle. And Jim Parker may deserve it as much as those two. If they start retiring numbers for those guys, they'll run out of numbers.

edit - I'll merge this.

BB, I was going through all the posts to see if any one mentioned Jim Parker, who dominated his postion in college and then for quite a spell in the pros.

If you use Hesiman as the qualifier then logic would suggest that you should add Lombardi so that linemen gain recognition.

Perhaps we would be better off if they had taken the time and energy to expand and beautify the buckeye grove and set aside room for all the future trees. A forest of buckeye trees... now there's a pleasant thought.

Troy Smith was a great football a player and won the Heisman Trophy. should his number 10 jersey be retired like the Ohio State Hiesman winners.

I say yes.
What you say or I say doesn't matter.... it will be retired within, I would say, 5 years for sure.
