Retiring Numbers (Merged)

Out of curiousity, what would you do if some player wearing it over the next five to ten years also happened to win a Heisman?

Hmm, that would be a hard thing to do in that situation. Would Ohio State put both of their names in the North end of the stadium along with the rest of the Heismans?

Retire it twice.

And... honestly... I never liked retiring numbers... but... I never had a problem with the "ring of honor" type stuff... but... what's the big deal if you had #47 up there twice.... with 2 names under it. I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. Besides you can't retire too many numbers... but... someone tell me that Troy Smith is more deserving than Orlando Pace... hardware aside.

He's rocking #11 right now, which Schoenhoft claimed this year. Is '0' allowed? It would fit with the Block O in front of him.

I think Brutus Buckeye has 0 claimed for the next couple of thousand millenia.

They'll wait 5-10 years to retire his number, but it will be retired officially. It will be retired unofficially until then.

Just my guess, anyway.

You beat me to it. I do not like the retired numbers either. They should just have their names up on the plaques in the stadium.

i dont think any number should be retired. ohio state is to great of a place to honor one individual, not in a team game. i m against every number they put up there... (in basketball, football and hockey)

I totally agree because now more numbers will be doubled for the players to wear since a certain number is retired.

That may be true, but... what are you going to do? "Unretire" the others? The question isn't about the merits of retiring numbers in general, but whether Smith's should be retired. Given the precedent of retiring OSU Heisman winners' jerseys, yes.

Yeah, I think there was a thread on this a year or so ago.. it was which non-heisman winners should have their number retired.. the list gets too long and you have to set a standard.. but i couldn't give an argument against OP or many others
