QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

Played a poor first half and had a bad fumble to begin the 2nd, but bounced back and helped lead OSU on some key drives. Still see a big difference between last year and this year. Last year this would've been a loss and Wisconsinesque performance from him. Instead he was able to figure things out later in the game.

Still a lot of work to do, no doubt, but I think this will be a key game in which Miller will learn a lot from when he goes over it the next two weeks. These are the types of games that Smith and Pryor also had in 2005 and 2009/10 and they improved greatly afterwards. I'm confident the same will happen with Miller.

Braxton cannot run the read option very well. Does it need to be in the playbook if the QB isn't successful at it?
I dunno, that seems a tad hyperbolic. Braxton made several mistakes tonight (I think largely in the first half). The 2 fumbles are both on him. I think there were maybe 4-6 plays that he made a poor read on the defensive ends and gave the ball to Hyde. But there were some very good reads he made with a tremendous fake-tuck (however you want to term it). Braxton played very well but he also nearly cost us the game. The OL and Hyde were in beast mode all night and Philly Brown did tremendous when given the opportunity.

He DID make a couple good reads after I posted that, but that said he simply isn't good at it. Too often he makes his decision pre-snap. Braxton has some real strengths. Read option is a significant weakness compared to his strengths.

I think mentally he's not at the point where he trusts himself running the football. The bye week should give him ample time to gain that confidence back. If he does, look out! Last year we didn't have playmakers to make teams pay for focusing on Braxton. This year we do, but we need Braxton to rip a long one or two to bring that fear back in defenses. It's only a matter of time before he gets it together, IMO. Proudly wore the #5 jersey tonight, and will continue to do so as long as he is in school.

It was a new Defensive strategy for Braxton. Playing soft and not giving anything deep I think threw him off his game some. Not one big play in the air that I can think of. All underneath stuff.

That being said, if it wasn't for the 2 fumbles the game isn't as close. We would have definitely scored on the one near the goal line.

Overall, he threw the ball well. He was patient. It wasn't his fault that he threw the
INT. His biggest mistake throwing was when he overthrew Fields for the sure TD.

Shame on NWU. They did not got back far enough to watch the Wisconsin game 2 years ago and learn from it. He burned them by throwing deep when he could have run for the first down. Classic Miller. And here I thought folks at NWU studied a lot? For shame, they were partying instead of watching film from 2 years ago.

I'd hate to see big mistakes...
only one of his turnovers really cost us points. The one pass interception was not even his fault as his arm got hit by a defensive lineman and it was right before halftime so we might not have scored anyhow. The one fumble near the goal line could have cost us but our defense got the ball right back and we scored a TD. That is what a team is supposed to do pick their teammates up when they make a mistake.

It wasn't just the turnovers. This is the worst I've seen Braxton since he was a Freshman.

Have to agree with this basically. I noticed last week that he seemed to be playing tentatively when he runs the ball. Saw it again yesterday. I remember commenting that it looked liked he was afraid of getting hurt, particularly his body language just before contact on some of his runs. He would turn sideways to the defender or even turn his back to them and basically stop as if he was afraid of the contact. He apparently said something to that affect after this game. I think this and his sometimes poor reads point to a lack of confidence for whatever reason. I believe he has gotten into his own head. I don't know how to fix that if it is self inflicted. Hopefully Meyer and his psych degree will have the answer. I have noticed that Meyer has consistently deflected blame when he could have thrown Miller under the bus and instead focused on the positives of Braxton's game. Since he seems to be coachable I am hoping that he and the coaches can work this out sooner than later and we see a more confident Miller which should hopefully directly affect the offensive game plan because right now I think this is really hindering what plays can be called/executed successfully.
