QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

Really he was just so damn indecisive distributing the ball and he looked extremely tentative running the ball. And then there are the fumbles...we got the win but the W goes to Hyde and the OL for this one. The fact was that he had a bad night given his capabilities. I fully expect him to bounce back to the real Braxton we know after a bye week to rest up and study up.

Braxton didn't play great but he certainly didn't have a terrible game. You know what he did do though? He made plays when we needed them most. Down 3 in the 4th quarter, he led us on an 81 yard touchdown drive where he went 4 of 4 for 65 yards. That's what I look for in a quarterback. Wasn't having a great game and still got it done when we needed him. I guarantee this talk about Kenny Guiton has him more hungry than ever and that can only be good for Ohio State.

That 81 yard drive Braxton finally got off his primary deep threat and started looking for his intermediate routes and checkdowns. Honestly any of the prior Braxton Miller's would have run probably all 3 of those checkdowns he had on that drive. A usually eager to run Braxton sat behind the line of scrimmage and got the ball to Carlos twice and probably his best play of the day when he waited and hit Brown for 38 yards down the sideline. Braxton's biggest struggle is his predetermination of the read option and the deepest WR route. If he starts taking those checkdowns instead of cutting upfield and trying to pick it up himself, we may finally start seeing a more of the ceiling that the coaches have talked about. Honestly I think that drive was his best this season.

Good observation. I think in one game we saw the worst and the best in Braxton Miller. What's promising is that the best came at the end.

He is an amazing athlete, but the truth is that he is not the Braxton we saw last year in terms of what he is best at - making something out of nothing with his legs. I'm sure some of that is by design. No one wants to see him carry the ball 25 times a game, and he is better at hanging in the pocket. But when he does run, he seems more focused on finding a safe place to land than housing the ball. Maybe that's what he is being told to do, but I sense that he does not trust that knee yet. That could be based on some instability or it could be more of a mental thing.

The way he has been playing is probably the best way to have him standing up by the end of the year, but at some point Ohio State will need him to be special with his legs. The first half vs. NW aside, he is so much better this year reading coverage, going through his progression, and delivering the ball accurately to the right guy.

The thing he does that really frustrates me is that the Bucks' staple running play is the zone read, and after 1 1/2 years in the offense, he continues to not be able to make that read a high percentage of the time. I don't get it.

I love that Braxton is developing his passing skills, getting down before getting his head knocked off, and running a little more passive. I'd rather him save that explosive running for when his knee is healthy and we are playing someone good. I guarantee you see Braxton being Braxton by the end of the year. For the time being, I think we'd be better off if we allowed him to develop his passing game. Just my IMO.

From Ross Fulton of 11W:
Miller's early turnovers and missed throw to Fields undoubtedly hurt Ohio State's efforts. But he recovered when Ohio State needed him. Though he never played poorly, Miller undoubtedly played his best in the fourth quarter. He ran north and south and made the correct reads in both the run and pass game. This was reminiscent of last season. Miller has repeatedly demonstrated he is at his best and most in the flow of the game when the game is on the line.

I doubt Braxton will ever have the same jukes regardless of recovery. He's a year older, body bigger etc. lots of kids come in with certain quickness that isn't there by year 4. I'm ok with that, as he still will have great moves if not insane like he showed in prior yeas. Meanwhile he gets better at the passing aspect all the time.

The only thing that disappointed me was that Northwestern was obviously taking away the deep ball but Braxton stays with his deep read so long that it hurts him reading the rest of the field. The receivers have done a great job creating seperation all year and he just has to realize what the defenses objective is earlier than the 4th quarter. This was a game where we should have killed them in the short passing game early to set up deep balls later in the game when Northwestern adjusted to take away short stuff. If Braxton can extend the play like Troy used to do, receivers will work their way open and his passing numbers will improve. The intermediate and checkdown throws along with accurate read option decisions really worked over Northwesterns defense on that 81 yd drive. If Braxton can start taking games over with better read option decisions and scanning the field better, I think this offense will take off even more.
