QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

What does that mean? :)

...

I'm hoping it means what I think it means. Which is best explained by recalling something I'd rather not. Here goes anyway...

As the telecast for the January '07 NC game got under way, the first glimpse we saw of Troy Smith was troubling. I tried not to believe what I thought I saw, but that image kept creeping back into my mind as the night unfolded. That first glimpse of Troy showed a man who looked like he was walking into a Physics final for which he had not studied (sorry for the geek metaphor... it's what I know). I don't know if that's fair or unfair to Troy. It's what we saw though.

Fast forward to the first few pics that Josh snapped of Todd as he arrived for camp. Continue to some of the pics where he had that same smile on his face during practice while he was throwing the ball. He looks like a guy walking into a test that he knows he's going to ace.

At this point I have to admit that I'm probably reading too much into a few snap-shots (ok, Josh: photographs). But I was looking for a reason to believe and I found it.

Fortunately, whatever I thought I saw will soon be shown for what it was or wasn't. We will no longer have to look for reasons to believe or reasons to doubt (which I know some of you do). One week from today, the picture of Ohio State Football 2008 will be starting to crystalize as we digest Saturday's events.

More fortunately, I won't be making any more posts this year that are based on nothing but hope and speculation. As of now, we really have something to talk about.

It's game week, Buckeye Planet. Pass me a beer, warm up my spread-sheets and Bring on the Buckeyes.

Bobby Hoying 1994 (JR): 170/301 2,335 yds 19 TD

Todd Boeckman 2007 (JR): 191/299 2,379 yds 25 TD

just sayin

Just to make it even more interesting, Todd's 14 INTs last season were the 3rd most INTs thrown in a season at OSU, tied with....you guessed it, 1994 Bobby Hoying. I couldn't find how many Hoying threw in 1995...anyone have a quick reference?

In command: Boeckman's growth in confidence creates comfort zone for Buckeyes

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

KYLE ROBERTSON Dispatch
Todd Boeckman finished last season as the Big Ten's most efficient passer in his first season as Ohio State's starting quarterback.

With a season's experience as starting quarterback and going into what amounts to his sixth year at Ohio State, there's something different about Todd Boeckman.
His father can see it.
"The biggest difference from last year to this year is just, very simply, you can see the confidence he has," Tim Boeckman said.
Boeckman's teammates can see it.
"Todd's the leader, his confidence running the offense is obvious, and you can see the rest of the offense feeding off of that," linebacker James Laurinaitis said.
His coach can see it, too.
"Todd Boeckman has great command of what we're trying to do," Jim Tressel said.

From the article above:

His father can see it.

No, I don't think Todd is too confident. His father and I see the same thing.

There is a small part of me that wishes JT would announce right now that he was going to RS Pryor. Perhaps then folks could begin to appreciate the tremendous potential we have in Boeckman.

Never have I seen a home town QB so berated for poor performance in a three game stretch during his first year as a starter. Never have I seen a kid who has contributed so much and who has the potential to contribute so much more be so unappreciated. Boeckman gets no credit for leading us to the NC game - only blame for the loss.

And I am not just talking about this board - although it does happen here. But when you talk among the great unwashed they simply can't wait for Todd to get out of Pryor's way - whether that means he graduates or loses his job.

So very unfair.

As one of those most vocal in his "observations" of Todd's play, I'd like to say that many of us don't blame him for losing the NC game, but rather are concerned in his change in confidence, and subsequently his performance, over the last 3-4 games of last season. If he is truly as confident now in himself as all the reports suggest he is, and more importantly, he can maintain that confidence throughout the entire season, then I think Todd just may have one of the best seasons any Buckeye QB has ever had. I still reserve the right to maintain my concern until after The Game...

Agree with you there, Oh8ch. Todd's first season ranks very highly in school history, but all people want to talk about are the low points. It's an unfortunate byproduct of the success in recent years. Fans expect every year to be better than the last, no matter how unrealistic that may be. One positive that may come from all of this is that TB has already felt every kind of pressure imaginable, and dealt with it very well. I can't go as far to hope that TP gets redshirted, but I see your point. If fans start to call for TB to be replaced after a few bad plays, they will only show their ignorance about the game. I'm sure everyone in the football program realizes that TB is the QB that gives them the best cance for a great season. When all is said and done, Boeckman will e remembered as a great OSU QB, and no one will admit to doubting him for a second.

"You're only as good as your last game." At least that's how the saying goes anyhow. I don't really buy into that totally myself, but I think most people do to a certain extent, even if just a little. It is just how the nation has come to doubt Ohio State as a whole; the season ended on a down note. I don't really think that's fair, but it is reality and it is human nature. And I think it is something that everybody has to deal with at some point in their lives. At some point everybody fucks something up or gets beaten.

But the important part is not that you screwed the pooch on something. It is how you learn from it and deal with it. A true winner and champion returns and overcomes. He erases the doubts, first in his mind and then in others. Todd Boeckman has been around winners and champions for nearly 6 years now at Ohio State. And because of that, I think Todd is going to erase the doubts in many of our fans. Just like I think the whole team is going to erase the doubts in the collective mind of the nation.

Go Bucks!
