QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Yesterday, ESPN's 'Hotseat' was talking about TB as the Heisman favorite.

It was Skip Bayless (I HATE that guy) saying that TB is the Heisman favorite, and another guy saying he shouldn't.

Pretty interesting, always nice to see some love for Todd.

Part of the attention is because the tOSU/Illini game is nationally on ABC/ESPN this week. They tend to hype a guy as a Heisman candidate for a few days before a game on ABC/ESPN, presumably in an attempt to boost ratings. It happened with Grothe of USF (at least in Joe Schad's mind), Ryan of BC, then Dennis Dixon (the deserved front-runner, but they hyped Ryan for a while first).

i assumed that this would be the case, hence me not sticking around for the story. Thanks for the update.

Bayless is a contrarian and an instigator. He's like the Tibor of sports television. I think that right now, for a host of reasons that most of us are aware of, conditions are right for him to come out and support Ohio State. The attention he would normally draw for ripping Ohio State is probably outweighed right now by the attention (from the south especially) he gets for saying things in support of Ohio State.

I think the publicity that Boeckman is getting right now is good, but I'm not sure I agree with the assertion that he's Heisman-worthy. His number are similar to Troy Smith's from last year, and he's quarterbacking an undefeated #1 team. There is an important difference though. Last year, the offense flowed through Troy Smith. This year, I think people began to see the same thing in Boeckman, especially after the Penn State game. It seems to me that the coaches even began to believe that up through the last part of the third quarter of the Wisconsin game. What happened after that with Chris Wells taking over the game illustrates what I think everyone needs to realize about the Ohio State offense and Todd Boeckman. It showed that the running of Chris Wells - or the threat of the running of Chris Wells - is truly what makes the offense go. Todd Boeckman has been able to do some wonderful things this year, but it has happened because the presence of Wells has opened up those opportunities for him. I'm not saying this to diminish Boeckman - he deserves all kinds of credit for taking full advantage of those opportunities - but I can't say that I think his performance has been Heisman-worthy when he is not the primary figure in the team's offensive success.

I agree here. Kudos to Todd for taking advantage of his opportunity and managing the offense. But I don't think Todd is ready to have the ball in his hands and win it all on his arm (and legs) as Troy did so well. Don't get me wrong. He's exceeded all expectations in my mind. But I just don't think he's in the Heisman ballpark where I would feel like "As long as we got TB throwing the ball, we'll win this sucker." I do think we're much better balanced this year with TB at the helm though and that's a great thing...just probably not a Heisman thing. With that said...go out the next 3 games Todd and prove me wrong.:osu:

Don't get me wrong. I think Todd is fully capable of going out there and making plays to win the game. He is talented and has all the tools to be an outstanding QB. He is more than just a caretaker. However, the opportunities he gets to prove he's more than just a caretaker are opened up in large part because of the presence of Chris Wells. I think the thing that makes this team dangerous and a real threat to win it all is because Chris Wells can shoulder that load - and if an opponent decides that they want to sell out to stop him, then the coaches can put that load on Boeckman's capable shoulders. He can go out there and make big plays too - he doesn't have to be counted on only to take care of the ball.

I didn't mean to sound like TB can't make big plays. I think he's proven that. But as last week showed us, Beanie is the "go-to" guy. I'd like nothing more than for TB to go out and show everyone that he is "That Guy" that can be counted on to shoulder the load. I just don't think he's quite on that level yet. I think he has the tools and the head. But in his first year as the starting QB, I think it's a little early to expect that of him. This team is all about balance...and as I said earlier...I think that's a great thing. Next year, I'm sure TB and Beanie will start the year on the Heisman watch list. (assuming they finish this year as we all hope).:wink2:

I think TB did an excellent job of "shouldering the load" in the Penn State game.

Beanie's 133 yeards didn't hurt either. That is what I love about this team. We are definitely a balanced offense. The passing game was getting shut down against Whisky and Beanie took over. Against PSU, Boekman was throwing it all over the place for 3 quarters.

Which is why many of the analyst are starting to finally come around on Ohio State. We are far from one dimensional and we really haven't missed a beat from last year past the first 2-3 weeks. In fact, I think our offense may be better. Our OL is more athletic this year imo(thanks to Boones improvement mainly and also excellent blocking from our TE's), which enables Beanie to bounce it outside, and it also makes Saine or MoWells very effective. Beyond that, the utilization of our TE's in the passing game has really helped a ton. Then to ice it off, Boeckman is just super efficient and gets it to where he needs to. Sometimes it's beyond just making the pass. Like when he sold the run so well to MoWells against PSU for that screen play. He does all of the little things right and our offense executes very well with Todd at the helm. I doubted him (and the rest of the QB's) early on and I couldn't be any happier that he proved me wrong. Great year so far Todd.

although I don't think Boekman is the "best" player on our team. He is probably the most valuable, partly due to depth at most other positions, and lack of depth at QB.

We clearly wouldn't be thinking BCS championship at this point in the season if Schoenhoft is our starting QB (no disrespect to Robbie but he clearly ain't ready).

From that perspective, there aren't too many other players out there that are more impt to their team than Todd.....

Couldn't agree more. I love having a balanced O and not having to rely on just throwing or running the ball.

Signal-calling baton passes from Smith to Boeckman

Wednesday, November 14, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- The game owned by Troy Smith for three years is now available for rent. Todd Boeckman is looking around, but to sign his lease, he doesn't have to be Smith. He just has to beat Michigan like him.
Boeckman has been replacing a Heisman Trophy winner since spring ball, but there may be nothing like filling the shoes of arguably the most dominant player in the history of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.
Jim Tressel is 5-1 against Michigan in large part because Smith is 3-0, the first Ohio State quarterback in 70 years to beat Michigan three times, accounting for 1,051 yards of offense and nine touchdowns in his three seasons of torturing Wolverines.
