QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

That might be good. I hate the TE idea, but I like the flanker idea. Start out with him and Wells in the backfield (or even Saine and other Wells wouldn't be bade). Shift Saine out wide, and make a linebacker cover him. Then, either run Wells that direction (whichever Wells it happens to be) to take advantage of the side that is missing a linebacker, or throw a slant to Saine to take advantage of the mismatch in coverage. Or, if they move a safety instead of a linebacker up on Saine, bomb it to the wide-out on that side.

But if you want to do something to "shake it up," you have to get creative. As much as I hate this idea, I also love it, but bring Henton in the game. Have him play 75% of the snaps on offense. Sometimes he's the quarterback, and sometimes a receiver. Sometimes he's the punter. Heck, try him at tight end or something. And keep Boeckman in the game, too, when Henton is the quarterback.

Zoom has lined up as a TE (well, more of an H-back look) several times this year. he has also lined up at fullback in an offset-I, and as both the tailback and the full back in a wing-T look.

i suspect that if he's healthy, he's going to line up all over the field against TSUN.

Focus stays dead ahead
Boeckman can't afford to dwell on poor outing

Despite a rough outing against Illinois, Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman, being sacked, still leads the Big Ten in passing efficiency.

Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman didn't go into this week hanging his head like a hound dog. No one would have blamed him if he had. The three interceptions he threw in a 28-21 loss to Illinois last week cost the previously top-ranked Buckeyes greatly. But he didn't have time to mope, with the Big Ten championship on the line Saturday at Michigan.
"This is the first game I've lost, so I don't know, I've just got to keep on fighting, not dwell on the past because we know we have a battle this week," Boeckman said. "Michigan is a good football team and we've got to go out there and stay strong and stay positive."

Glad to see that TB has his head up and is focused on TSUN. I don't think we'll see a repeat of last week's game against scUM.

Todd has at least 6 weeks to get his confidence back.

His last 8 quarters of play were not his best.

But good win today nonetheless...go bucks

The weather obviously had something to do with it today. Neither Mallet nor Henne had any luck today either. As I recall, Boeckman was able to convert a few third downs today--more than Michigan was often able to do.

I find it interesting that he threw only two passes in the second half. That fact can be taken two different ways. I just hope it has no bearing on what occurs for the BCS game.
Todd was struggling, but that game felt like PSU 04. Best chance to lose was via offensive mistakes, as the opposing offense was doing almost nothing.

He started working the game clock after Beanie's 2nd TD.

I would say Todd has six weeks to get TRESSEL's confidence back. I am thrilled, delighted, etc., with the victory, but I wish we had shown Boeckman a little more trust by saying, okay, if it's there, audible out, throw thefreaking ball. Or whatever.... Both in the MSU game and again yesterday, our playcalling said Todd, we don't trust you to not screw things up so just give the ball to Beanie and get out of the way.....

Please understand I'm not really second-guessing the coaches as much as I'm just sayin' that we need Todd to be able to throw the ball when we get up against a D better than Meatchicken's....

I also like the idea of doing more called plays for QB draw type of stuff... that's one of the great things about the spread is that unless they have someone spying, he should always have the option to audible to a "let's go" draw when there's no one in the middle.

I hope he does a lot of throwing, and working with all the receivers over the next six weeks.

Hard practices, contact and all, in getting ready for the Rose Bowl is what we need.

Not that I know anything about anything.....

the pick before half-time limited what they could trust him with in the second half

That horrible decesion almost turned all of the momentum to UM before half-time and it was an awful decesion by Boekman to try and make that throw

He'll be fine in warm weather conditions come Januray

I think Todd will leave a fine legacy behind at Ohio State when he graduates. So, as someone who likes this guy, here's my take on TB, from the Barcalounger so to speak.

Todd started getting some serious mentions in the Heisman race and a lot of positive confirmation of his performance on the field. In the Illinois game, that came a bit unravelled for him. He was seeing pressure like he had not seen since the MSU game second half. The O-line just did not hold. Then, TB got thrown down in a tackle that swung him by the arm onto his other shoulder very hard. I think he may be nursing a bit of an injury from that tackle and some of the other hits he took in the Illinois game.

As the Illini game continued, TB uncharacteristically missed a couple easy passes, throwing behind his runners and was short on the long ball that he loves to throw. Then, he made a couple of really bad throws into coverage.

I think that performance, compared to the almost-Heisman accolades that he was receiving prior to the game, got into his head a bit and that he carried that into The Game.

I mentioned in The Game thread that Todd looked awfully tense prior to the kickoff.

It was nearly freezing on the field and it was wet. Fingers don't work the same, the muscles are more rigid, blood flows away from the extremities in those conditions. All of this affects a QB's performance. Henne also looked like crap, even Ryan Mallet (the Great) did.

So, TB, already questioning himself then falls and loses the handle on the ball a few times on the slippery field turf. You could see in his eyes that he was coming onto the field for each set of downs looking really stressed and lacking his normal confidence.

That interception was really a bad decision. If there is one thing that Tressel doesn't want happening at QB, it's bad decisionmaking. But I think the weather conditions were more likely the reason why he put it on the ground and drove it down their throats. The O-line wanted it (read some of their post-game comments). Beanie wanted it and was having a lot of success. It was bad weather. And TB was not looking his normal self.

So, I don't think that Tressel is really down on TB, even if he did mention the end of 1st half turnover. Rather, I think that TB's bad decisions derive from the conditions and his performance during the five quarters that ended at halftime yesterday and he might have been pretty happy to see the offense that was called.

Now TB and the coaches will work so that he can regain confidence in his own decisionmaking again and perhaps recover from the hits he took in the Illinois game.

So, in short, I expect him to be back in shape after a couple good completions against our bowl opponent and Tressel to call on him as he has all year.

Steve summed it up best, Todd got his confidence rattled, and there wasn't a whole lot of time to work on that from Illinois to scUM, so he tried Todd in the first half, he had a pick and then he went to Beanie. Odds are he spoke to Todd at the half to get a feel for him and went from there. I like Todd, I just think he needs to understand that bad games happen, something he hasn't really experienced yet. Tressel will get him back on track, there's plenty of time, and we should see him back in the Rose Bowl.

My only real comments on him are this: Sometimes the short slant routes are great for getting in rhythm, go with a few of those before you decide to try for the 50 yard pass if you are feeling off.

Boeckman starts shaky, holds on

Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 11.19.2007

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? Todd Boeckman always had a grip on where he fit into the big picture during Ohio State?s 14-3 win over Michigan on Saturday.
But he took the unusual step for him of putting a glove on his left hand after he fumbled twice early in the game.
Statistically, the junior quarterback from St. Henry had his quietest game of the season, completing 7 of 13 for 50 yards. In the last two quarters, he threw only two passes, both of them incompletions.
It didn?t bother Boeckman a bit. ?If we keep on winning, I don?t care if I throw any,? he said.
What did bother him early were the rainy conditions. Both his fumbles came on snaps in the first quarter. Alex Boone recovered one and he fell on another himself.
?It was tough. Every time you put the ball on the ground, it got wet. The first couple series I had trouble handling the ball and I wanted to get some sort of grip on my hands,? he said about his decision to try gloves.
