QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Boeckman has big shoes to fill in rivalry game
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer

COLUMBUS -- After Troy Smith went a perfect 3-0 against Michigan in his time as a starter, Todd Boeckman gets his first crack at the Wolverines on Saturday. It's the first time an Ohio State quarterback will make his first start in the series on the road since Craig Krenzel did it in 2001.

That, like most other Ohio State-Michigan games of the new millennium, was an OSU victory.

Boeckman watched Smith put up some of the biggest numbers in the history of the series, earning Smith the title ?Michigan killer.' Now it's Boeckman's turn.

As long as TB doesn't try to force anything, he will be fine. A lot of his INTs come from him trying to force the ball to a WR that isn't really open (see the first INT against Illinois). If we stay balanced and he does a good job of throwing the ball away or scrambling, when there isn't anything open, then I'm VERY confident the Bucks will come away with a W and in a big way.

If you check out my post above, I stand by this. I think TB has done a great job running the show for a first year QB. But when we become a pass first team, he tries to do too much and that has not been a good thing. When we are able to establish the run first, TB is very effective. But as we saw against Illinois, when we put it on TB's shoulders to lead us from behind throwing the football...well, he's a little raw still and tried to do too much. Balance is key. Anyway, I think as long as we don't get behind and rely on the pass, TB will be fine. He's a smart guy and he seems to stay pretty cool under pressure. I don't think he'll let last week get in his way this week. I think he'll still come out ready to fire. I just hope he can be content to take what scUM gives him and not force it. With that said...I'm reminded of Troy Smith's coming out party a few years back at the Big House. I sure wasn't expecting what he did that day. And somewhere inside of me, I'm thinking we might see "Todd Boeckman, Wolverine Killer" this Saturday. Would be a great way to bounce back after his first loss as the starter at tOSU. :osu:

Tom (DC): Who shows up Saturday... Boeckman vs. Penn State/Wisconsin or Boeckman vs. Illinois? Please tell me it was only one step back...

Mel Kiper: Everybody is going to have a bad game. Right now he is either the No. 1 or No. 2 ranked junior QB. The guy he's competing with is Painter from Purdue. Chase Daniel is also a junior. He's my fourth rated junior QB. Last week, Boeckman was 13-23, no TDs, 3 INTs. By far, his worst performance of the year. The completion percentage was the lowest of the year for him. He only had one other game this year where he had more INTs than TDs. The 13 completions was tied for the lowest of the year. He threw more INTs in this one game than he did in the previous four games. He's a first year starter. He had a hiccup. He wasn't the only player at OSU that played a subpar game.

Boeckman was loyal to OSU as UM recruit

The St. Henry product wore a Buckeyes T-shirt during his visit to Ann Arbor, Mich.

COLUMBUS ? University of Michigan coach Lloyd Carr recruited Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman in high school, offering a scholarship and coaxing a visit out of him.
The Boeckman party attended the OSU-Michigan game in 2001, but Carr probably knew his chances of getting a commitment were dim when the St. Henry star showed up wearing a Buckeye T-shirt.

"I sat on the side, and I think we were the only ones in the stadium rooting for Ohio State," Boeckman said.
Having been to the Big House as a spectator and backup QB, Boeckman knows how rabid Wolverine fans can be. But he's not intimidated.

Boeckman faces big test at Michigan

Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 11.15.2007

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]COLUMBUS ? When he was being recruited, Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman took advantage of the chance to watch games at as many college stadiums as he could.
One of those was Michigan Stadium for the 2001 Ohio State-Michigan game when he and his mom and dad sat right behind the Michigan bench.
Boeckman wasn?t as blatant as wearing an OSU shirt under his jacket or openly cheering against the Wolverines. But he and his parents were definitely in the minority in their section.
?I think we were the only ones on that side of the stadium rooting for Ohio State,? he said.
The Ohio State-Michigan ironies don?t stop there. The Michigan student assigned to host the Boeckmans that day was Courtney Bollman, the daughter of Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman.
Saturday, when Boeckman goes back to Michigan Stadium as Ohio State?s starting quarterback, his welcome will be a little less warm.

I trust that Todd will have his A game on saturday. We will need him as much as anyone else.
:oh:

:io:

While I agree that that will be his intention, the Michigan defense will also have their A game.

Damn - I'm just getting nervous about this game.

Me too. Tress always comes up with some wrinkle that gives us an advantage. 3 years ago, Smith ran on their asses. 2 years ago, Tyree came in as TE and we ran the ball. Last year, we spread the ball out. I think Tress will come up with something that will cause a major disadvantage for scUM. I think it will be Saine as a TE or flanker matched up with a LB. That will cause major problems.

I couldn't agree more. We need to stick to our bread and butter, which is pounding the football & running with Beanie & Mo. After we do that, PA fake and over the top for 6. I think we'll be seeing a heavy dose of Beanie this week (as long as he's healthy), to keep some of the pressure off Todd.

That might be good. I hate the TE idea, but I like the flanker idea. Start out with him and Wells in the backfield (or even Saine and other Wells wouldn't be bade). Shift Saine out wide, and make a linebacker cover him. Then, either run Wells that direction (whichever Wells it happens to be) to take advantage of the side that is missing a linebacker, or throw a slant to Saine to take advantage of the mismatch in coverage. Or, if they move a safety instead of a linebacker up on Saine, bomb it to the wide-out on that side.

But if you want to do something to "shake it up," you have to get creative. As much as I hate this idea, I also love it, but bring Henton in the game. Have him play 75% of the snaps on offense. Sometimes he's the quarterback, and sometimes a receiver. Sometimes he's the punter. Heck, try him at tight end or something. And keep Boeckman in the game, too, when Henton is the quarterback.

I agree with you that scUM will see a lot of Zoom. As a Receiver and a Back. JT has a special playbook for scUM every year, and they will get that and the kitchen sink thrown at them.
