QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

OSU's Boeckman blossomed, thrived

The St. Henry product leads the Buckeyes into their second straight national title game.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State's Todd Boeckman never let the surprising success he was having through most of the season go to his head. But the junior quarterback wasn't quite as careful at keeping the bad times from infiltrating his mind.
Boeckman has thrown 23 touchdown passes this year, the fourth-highest total in OSU history. But he failed to register a scoring toss in his last two games while throwing four interceptions ? one-third of his season total.

Todd Boeckman 19-31, 237 yards 3 TD's, 1 INT. BCS MVP.

Dorsey and company will be making life miserable up the middle all day long. Beanie will finally make some noise once he gets a lather up late in the game but it will be Boeckman and his TE's that do the damage early off of play action. Robiskie will scare LSU and I see a cover two play against the Brians on the outside with the extra DB up playing the run support. I see them in a nickel blitz package most of the night to be honest which means Boeckman better be reading and reacting very quickly. Robo and Hartlines catches will be mostly underneath stuff I imagine. Our best plays of the night should be Wells/Saine out of the backfield Nicol/Ballard up the seam and with Sanzenbacher getting some mismatches against linebackers. The key is how well Person/Rehring and Cordle can do to keep the push up the middle minimal. Todd will have to throw a lot of passes away in order to save down and distance and live to play another down.

I can see it all developing, I just hope Todd can also.

OSU football: Boeckman looks to reverse downward trend

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Over the past three months, Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman has gone from being a nobody to a somebody, then from something special to something of a question mark. What a strange trip it has been.
The Buckeyes entered the season unsure of what they had in the 23-year-old, first-time starter.
Boeckman quickly proved he was more than a caretaker, leading Ohio State to 10 straight wins and the No. 1 ranking while hanging around the
top of the passing-efficiency chart nationally.

None of us expected this. Here we are 30 days from another challenge at the BIG ONE. Ohio State at this point is still a very YOUNG football team.

And I think that Todd Boeckman is still going over films of the Illinois game
to cover or correct the mistakes he committed. But this time its for the National Championship against LSU. I will bet you a hundred to one that Jim Tressel and Todd are spending alot of time together reviewing films of the past season.

My freind here in J-ville (Jax-Buck) predicted from the get go that Ohio State would be in the N/C game. Hw was right. And I was not as optomistic.

So I hope that Todd Boeckman can have a great game - I think alot will be resting on his shoulders. The rest of Ohio State players, will take care of its self along with some turn-overs from LSU.

Boeckman hopes to sing different tune in title game
By JON SPENCER
Mansfield News Journal

COLUMBUS - Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman is a country music fan who hates that his performance has turned into one of those melancholy, dog-got-shot, girlfriend-dumped-me country music songs. In the Buckeyes' last two games, Boeckman has looked nothing like the leader you expect at the controls of the nation's No. 1 team. He hasn't come close to resembling the first-year starter who rose up from obscurity to top the Big Ten in pass efficiency.

On the season

"The credit for this season has to go to so many people. You have to give credit to the linemen, the receivers, the running backs because everyone has done so much for this team to be good."

On LSU

"You have to be a very balanced team when you play a team like this. You cannot rely on just one thing. Their defense is too good for you to rely on just one thing."

On Ohio State's offensive line

"The line has done a great job protecting me this year. I have all the faith in the world in them. They will help get the job done."

On LSU's defense

"We have to use a balanced attack. We can't go out and expect to run for 50 yards or pass for 50 yards. They will come out to stop us. We have to go out and prove ourselves."

Boeckman hopes deep passes back on target
Flaw in footwork resulted in misguided bombs

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Letting it fly

Ohio State relied heavily on long passes this season en route to an 11-1 record and a spot in the national championship game. The Buckeyes completed passes of 40 yards or more in nine of 12 games.

Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman in recent days has spent hours watching himself on videotape and concentrating on where his toes are pointed in practice. The Buckeyes hope his efforts bear fruit, because they need their "Mad Bomber" back.
That's what OSU receivers coach Darrell Hazell calls Boeckman, who through most of the season was a prolific deep passer before some late struggles.
"A lot has to do with timing, the trajectory of the ball," Hazell said, describing Boeckman's ability. "Some guys throw a deep ball that's moving pretty fast, whereas his is kind of just nice and soft. It's an easy up-and-down, catchable ball."
In other words, few can bend it like Boeckman.

Here's hoping that correcting the footwork problem identified on film allows Boeckman to successfully throw deep on January 7th. LSU will crowd the box and force tOSU to hit some long passes before dropping their safeties back.

thats why it would not surprise me that the first play of the game is a deep ball to either of the brians. Could you imagine the crowds going nuts and LSU starts creeping up to the line of scrimmage expecting the 240 pounder then bamb we do our 7 step PA deep ball? Everytime I see Boeckman take that deep drop I stand up because I know he's goign deep. It would be awesome if we could connect early on one of the deep balls.

Boeckman says technical, confidence problems led to poor finish

AP
POSTED: December 20, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? For 10 games, Todd Boeckman was downright Heismanlike as Ohio State?s first-year starting quarterback.

After closing the season with games in which he played about like a bronze statue, the Buckeyes are hoping that Boeckman can return to form heading into their game against LSU for the Bowl Championship Series national title.

??He probably didn?t have as consistent a games in the last two as he did in the first 10,?? coach Jim Tressel said of his junior quarterback. ??But he?s the kind of guy, he?s going to study it and he?s going to go back and work on his fundamentals. I know he?s been working hard these last few practices on really going back and thinking about footwork. This has been a good opportunity for Todd from that standpoint.??

The quarterback position is at the forefront of a lot of Ohio State fans? tension these days, ever since Tressel stunningly revealed that Boeckman?s backup, Robbie Schoenhoft, has been working out at tight end. That move means that third-stringer Antonio Henton ? suspended earlier this season until pleading guilty to a minor misdemeanor count of loitering for prostitution ? apparently is now second team for the bowl.

After two rough games to end the season, Boeckman is looking to bounce back
Thursday, December 20, 2007
BY Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Right up there with ?Don?t tase me, bro? as one of the year?s most memorable quotes could be one from Todd Boeckman.

?Don?t faze me, bro? is the way Ohio State?s quarterback is looking at the end of his season as the Buckeyes offense tries to find itself before the Jan. 7 national title game against LSU. It will be up to Boeckman to head the search party.

Boeckman, stunningly spectacular for 10 games, lost his footwork, accuracy and a bit of his confidence in the last two games. Once a Heisman Trophy sleeper, Boeckman dropped off the national radar when he combined for four interceptions against Illinois and Michigan, on 20-of-36 passing for just 206 yards and no touchdowns.

?Maybe I got down on myself too much at the end,? said Boeckman, who has thrown for 2,171 yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 picks while completing 65 percent of his passes. ?At the beginning of the season, I was making mistakes and bouncing right back. At the end, I wasn?t bouncing back as quickly. You can?t let a turnover affect your entire game. I?m going to shrug those off and keep going.?

Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Bill Livingston comments on Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman

Tuesday, December 25, 2007Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
He is the cab bage, not the king. He is the one who followed the legend, tarnished as it was by the farewell game. He is not the guy who created the legend himself.
Meet Todd Boeckman, quarterback of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the No. 1 team in the nation, although you would have a hard time proving that outside Ohio.
Troy Smith won the Heisman Trophy last year, the first quarterback at Ohio State, the first quarterback in the Big Ten, to do so. He threw four touchdown passes to beat Michigan for the third straight time as a starter, an Ohio State first.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Todd Boeckman mustn't be pick-y

Tuesday, December 25, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Two weeks ago, Jim Tressel called Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman in for a healthy film session. About half of the Buckeyes' 11-1 season was there for the critiquing.
"I didn't know what to expect at first," Boeckman said. "But it wasn't too bad, going in there and seeing what you need to work on. It was constructive criticism. He'd say things like, 'You can't be throwing that ball there; you can't be doing that.' But when I'd make a good throw, he said 'Good read.' "
Boeckman was then ready to focus on watching LSU, Ohio State's opponent in the BCS National Championship in 13 days. He might want to also take a gander at the previous nine BCS National Championship games.

Well let's hope that the first play is not a long bomb to Robo, who scores a 70 yard TD, is injured during the celebration, and then we go to sleep for the rest of the game
