QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

On College Football Live, Jesse Palmer (Answering a question from someone named "Brian" from Chagrin Falls, hehe) said that Boeckman has infact played himself into the Heisman race and could be as high as third on some people's ballots, right now. Three solid games to close out could make him a darkhorse.

Nice talk by the generally unreliable Palmer - still I think of it more that Boeckman places himself well for next year .

I say this for the other factor that plays a role in Heisman voting -- spread the wealth. Giving back-to-back Heismans to players from the same school is a relative rarity.
Army 1945, 1946
Ohio State 1974, 1975 (and only 2-time trophy winner to boot).
USC '04, '05

It would take substantial movement IMO for the NY Athletic club to buck what seems like a 30 year cycle - a cycle that has already passed.

But, if it did happen - how great to have two QBs as back-to-back winners at Ohio State? :biggrin:

I guess if Boeckman won the Heisman next year Beanie would have to stick around for his senior year to win his: :-P

But in all honesty, Todd's got a great shot at it next year I would think.

If he keeps going as he has he might have a great shot at it this year.

He'll have to put up some freakish stats to get some consideration. An invitation to New York is a long shot, IMO. As much as I disagree with it, your Heisman campaign starts with a strong finish to your junior year.

Can a RB win a Heisman in Tressel's offense? We clearly won't depend only on one guy next year to run the ball, even with a healthy Beanie. He'd have to get some sick stats against USC, and make the most of the playing time he gets the rest of the season. If Beanie has to put the team on his back to win us a game we are in some serious trouble, with the way Tressel has run a balanced offense spreading the ball around.

Maybe the Heisman talk can be split to another thread?

Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman was today named a finalist for the 2007 Davey O'Brien Natinoal Quarterback Award.

He and 14 other quarterbacks made the semifinal list. Those 14 are:
* Sam Bradford, Oklahoma, FR
* Colt Brennan, Hawai'i, SR
* Brian Brohm, Louisville, SR
* Shaun Carney, Air Force, SR
* Rudy Carpenter, Arizona State, JR
* Chase Daniel, Missouri, JR
* Dennis Dixon, Oregon, SR
* Graham Harrell, Texas Tech, JR
* Corey Leonard, Arkansas State, SO
* Todd Reesing, Kansas, SO
* Matt Ryan, Boston College, SR
* Tim Tebow, Florida, SO
* Pat White, West Virginia, JR
* Andre' Woodson, Kentucky, SR

Heisman consideration is great and all, really. But who would have honestly thought at the beginning of the season that Todd would even be mentioned in the same sentence with those other QB's? All most Buckeye fans were expecting was a caretaker, and Boeckman has turned into a star. The fact that he is even on that list just blows away any preseason predictions most people could have had.

Ohio State's Boeckman starting to pile up some accolades

By Staff reports

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

In addition to being named Big Ten offensive player of the week Monday, OSU's Todd Boeckman was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien Award, which goes to the nation's top quarterback.
The first-year starter is the only Big Ten player to make the list. The three finalists will be picked Nov. 18, and the winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN Dec. 6.

Boeckman, a junior from St. Henry, completed 19-of-26 passes for a career-high 253 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 37-17 win over Penn State.

Boeckman's watch?
So if, like me, you took in GameDay, or in my case watched in person, and heard former Michigan Wolverine and Cleveland native Desmond Howard mutter the words that Buckeyes quarterback Todd Boeckman deserves Heisman Trophy consideration should he perform well against Penn State, you should know that Howard did clarify those statements after the show.
The former Heisman-winner took note of the fact that it's a less-than-spectacular year even with the play of Andre Woodson and Dennis Dixon, the lightning-rod playmakers for Kentucky and Oregon, respectively.

Todd getting a little Heisman love from Pete Fiutak @ CFN:

My Heisman ballot this week would be … I vote based on a combination of three things: Most valuable player, most outstanding player, and the signature player of the season. I might wildly change my mind weekly, but I’ll sort it all out at the end. 1) Matt Ryan, QB Boston College, 2) Pat White, QB West Virginia, 3) Tim Tebow, QB Florida, 4) Dennis Dixon, QB Oregon, 5) Todd Boeckman, QB Ohio State
