QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

TB would be a great story if he won the Heisman this year because he had to sit behind Troy Smith Then of coasre eveyone knows Chris Wells will win it. So we could have three heisman winners in Tressels first decade. AWSOME

I've maintained since before this season that Todd Boeckman has everything he'd need (talent, coaching, supporting cast, setting, etc.) to accomplish over the course of two years most everything Troy Smith was able to accomplish in his final two years - and maybe more. There's still a long way to go, but he's well on his way.

Seeing this happen make you wonder how the college careers of guys like Stanely Jackson, Steve Bellisari and even Craig Krenzel would have turned out if they had been coached by Jim Tressel & staff from the moment they set foot on campus as freshmen.

Interesting... and good to see nomore Tebow on the list. Nobody on a team with 3+ losses should win the award. Jesse Palmer made a great comment regardin Matt Ryan and his Heisman hopes last night. He said, and I agree, that Ryan is rated #51 in passer efficiency. Seems odd that he is getting so much acclaim, yet there are 50 QBs that are, right now, more efficient than Ryan. Palmer said it was the undefeated record... but you have to wonder why Todd is just now getting mentioned even though he has been top 10 most of the year, and now at #3.

Always hated that qualification... Tebow is the heart and soul of that team, problem is there isn't one on the defensive side of the ball.

Heisman consideration is great and all, really. But who would have honestly thought at the beginning of the season that Todd would even be mentioned in the same sentence with those other QB's? All most Buckeye fans were expecting was a caretaker, and Boeckman has turned into a star. The fact that he is even on that list just blows away any preseason predictions most people could have had.

Wow, to think Todd gets mentioned with the likes of Corey Leonard. Who would have thunk it? :shake:

In all seriousness, I would agree that he has outperformed my and many other's expectations and you can see his improvement each week and his confidence increasing dramatically. It's really fun to watch.

Especially considering he hasn't played/beaten any real talented teams, nor do The Bucks really deserve to be ranked #1 and all. :roll1: It's nice that a Buckeye (not named Laurinaitis) is being graced with some national recognition.

Agree... it's disgusting that the Heisman has essentially become a team award and does not reward the best player... but that discussion is for another thread.

:slappy: So did I this morning when I achieved the ever allusive "clean pinch." Take that Matt Fucking Ryan.

Way to save toilet paper!

I actually hate to say this, but I don't want Todd to win the Heisman...I want his full attention and practice time available for the NC game (uh, if we do win the last three games, of course).

Todd is now #3 in the country in passing efficiency behind Tebow and Bradford, and ahead of guys like Brennan, Brohm, Carpenter, Dixon, and Ryan.

How can Matt Ryan be a realistic HT candidate when he's rated 50th in passing?

Ryan's a sentimental choice this week, but the rest of his offense is terrible, which is going to kill his candidacy.

Part of why Ryan's efficiency numbers are low is because he's throwing more short passes. His YPA and TDPA are significantly lower than TB's, yet he has something like 400 more yards. Despite throwing what should be higher percentage passes, his completion percentage is also around 8 points lower. (Probably because his receivers suck.)

Keep in mind that he's put those numbers up against an even weaker schedule than we're accused of having. They're going to get worse, not better.

Boeckman's success with the deep pass and high percentage of TD passes thrown (over 10% of his throws are for a score) bring his PE numbers way up, and Tressel generally coaches his QBs in a way that results in high PE numbers. Krenzel and TSmith both were at the top of the conference and at or near the top in the nation. Without looking it up, I think that they rank #1 and #2 in OSU history in that stat. He should remain near the NCAA lead in that, and may wind up at #1 in our record books as well.

Really, the only thing lacking in Boeckman's candidacy is a "Heisman moment" play. He's shown up big in all of our "first real tests". He's had no horrible your-campaign-is-over games, with the worst moment being MSU, and his performance has been not only steady, but key in OSU's dominance.

With no one having a lock on the hardware, it's possible that a huge game against Michigan may not only put him in New York, but give him an outside shot at winning it. We need the weasels to win out and sneak back into the top 10 so that The Game gets enough hype.

BOECKMAN TAKES CHARGE
Ohio State QB earns his position the hard way

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - This past spring, Todd Boeckman was one of three individuals trying out for the primary role in a gridiron drama that features a rich history and a long line of award-winning leading men - Ohio State football. If this was Shakespeare, to fully win the lead part Boeckman would have to prove he could play a convincing Othello, and do it on the largest stage. This would not be summer stock theater or the Stratford Festival - this was the big time. Nine games into the 2007 season, the Buckeyes find themselves unbeaten, ranked No. 1 in the country, and pushing towards a third straight Big Ten championship. Boeckman, a rare fifth-year junior who first enrolled part-time at Ohio State in 2003 and just practiced with the team, clearly has made the ascension into the showcase position with this year's Buckeyes.
