Shades of 'Brady'

Unflappable Boeckman shines in No. 1 Buckeyes' rout

T1_1027_boeckman.jpg

Buckeyes QB Todd Boeckman completed 19 of 26 passes for 253 yards and three scores.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Todd Boeckman has not thrown a game-winning touchdown pass across his body like Matt Ryan. He does not run over linebackers like Tim Tebow. He does not juke guys out of their shoes on the option plays, like Dennis Dixon.
But Saturday night at Penn State's overflowing Beaver Stadium, Ohio State's quarterback was every bit as effective as any of them in leading the nation's No. 1 team to a resounding 37-17 victory. He completed 19-of-26 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns, continually burning the nation's seventh-ranked defense with deftly placed intermediate throws and picture-perfect deep balls.
To listen to some of Boeckman's teammates tell it, the rest of us shouldn't be so surprised.
"I watch other quarterbacks [around the country]," said receiver Brian Hartline. "I haven't seen anything he doesn't do that the other guys do."
"Todd's not a caretaker," said tackle Kirk Barton. "He's a franchise-type quarterback. He's not like Trent Dilfer with the [2000] Ravens. He's more like Tom Brady."
Easy there, Kirk. Franchise quarterback? Tom Brady? You just guys just had one of those last year, a certain Heisman Trophy winner. You know ... Troy Smith? This guy -- some 23-year-old, fifth-year junior (no, that's not a typo) who no one outside of Columbus had heard of two months ago -- couldn't possibly be a star himself.
Could he?
Actually, according to NCAA statistics, Boeckman entered Saturday night's game as the nation's seventh-rated passer. (Among those rated lower than him: BC's Ryan, Kentucky's Andre Woodson and Missouri's Chase Daniel.) Hmm ... that's the exact spot Smith finished in 2006.

I think the comparison of Tom Brady and Todd Boeckman is accurate, especially considering the situations.

-The media calls the Patriots cheaters, and initially questioned how much of their success came off of cameras.

-The media calls Ohio State overrated, and says they aren't any good anymore after their loss to Florida.

-Tom Brady just sits in the pocket, reads the defense, and sends out big passes to his big play receivers. This is sort of like The Todd.

-Both defenses are the class of their field.

-Both offenses are disgustingly efficient.

-Both coaches seem to silently have a vendetta against the rest of the world. The media has just served to tick off two workaholics. They just don't show it externally.

-Both teams consistently reload and just continue trucking along, while most of their competition has to rebuild.

-Todd could end up breaking Troy's tOSU touchdown record. Brady is going to crush Manning's touchdown record.

-Their primary rivals are also trucking along. TSUN is on a 7-0 run right now, after losing to Appalachian State and Oregon. Ignore that, and you will see that they are 5-0 in the Big Ten right now. Indianapolis has been winning football games, period. They aren't doing it in a flashy way. They aren't doing it in a pretty way. They have been winning a lot of close games. Sort of like scUM.

-They both had to knock off upstarts that focused a lot on the passing game. Ohio State knocked off Purdue, while New England knocked off Dallas.

-Both have had a few easy games: 1-6 Jets, 3-3 Chargers, 2-4 Buffalo, 2-4 Cincinnati, 3-3 Cleveland (Actually, their hardest test so far, in terms of the game Cleveland gave them...), 0-7 Miami. tOSU has faced Youngstown State, Washington, Akron, Kent State, and Minnesota.

I can say that I have been on the Todd bandwagon before the season started, and have kept on it...

You can just see all the things that he does well, yes he is still learning to paly in game situations which is why you still see the high throws, the misses and the bad decisions, but no QB is perfect, especially not a first year starter, but what you can see is how Todd is learning...He is a very caochable kid as he is the son of a coach, and understands what coaches are telling him, when they are teaching him...

He just has all the tools, the size, arm stregth, mobility in the pocket, accuracy, the toughness to stand in the pocket, the backbone to take a shot and not worry after he lets it go, being on the same page with his receivers, and the understanding of the offense...

This season has been on his shoulders before the season started, and I said that he would lead us to 8-0, and then we would see how his progression was and how it would go from there...Well we are now 9-0 and he just had his best game of his career...

Buckeyes quarterback completes 73 percent of passes to keep perfect season alive on the road at Penn State

Oct. 29, 2007

OFFENSE:
Todd Boeckman, Ohio State
JR, QB, St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry

On the road against one of the nation's top defenses, Boeckman completed an astounding 73.1 percent of his passes for a career-high 253 yards while adding three touchdown strikes to keep Ohio State undefeated atop the Big Ten standings. The junior quarterback completed 19 of 26 passes for a Buckeyes squad which racked up 453 total yards of offense in a 37-17 victory over nationally-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions entered the game rated fourth nationally allowing only 15.0 points per game and seventh in the country giving up only 279.5 yards of total offense per contest. After Penn State took an early 7-3 lead in the first quarter, Boeckman completed touchdown passes to Brian Robiskie, Brian Hartline and Jake Ballard to give the Buckeyes a 24-7 lead in the third quarter. The Ohio native has now thrown at least two touchdown strikes in every game this season and ranks second in the conference with 21 scoring tosses on the year, which ranks fourth for a single season in school annals. He currently leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally with a pass efficiency rating of 164.3. Boeckman earns the first weekly laurel of his career.

Well..............he showed me and now, I believe!

I am impressed up to this point, but it will come down to winning at Michigan for most fans...

Per 1460 @ ~ 5:15. Herbie said he could see Boeckman getting invited to New York for the heisman if he has a strong final 3 games. It thinks it's a stretch but possible at this point with all the favorites falling.

Go get em Todd.

He's a longshot but 2 solid games against UW and UI(lets say 200 yards and 3 td's for each) and a monster game against scUM(like 250-300 yards and 3-4 td's) would give him the stats, exposure, and team success to get an NYC invite.
