Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman has continued to develop since playing well in his first big road start against Washington.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Quarterback Todd Boeckman might have just been along for the ride the last time Ohio State played in Beaver Stadium, but he kept his eyes wide open.

That helped him see what he faces tonight when, as the starter, he leads top-ranked Ohio State against No. 24 Penn State. He knows there is a "white out" promotion being staged by Penn State students, just as when the Nittany Lions beat the Buckeyes 17-10 in 2005. He knows the rest of the crowd of more than 107,000 is going to be into it from the start.
And he knows some of those fans will be venting their wrath at the Buckeyes even before they reach the field.

When Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith exhausted his eligibility at Ohio State last January, Ohio State fans were understandably antsy.
Even those most loyal to the Scarlet and Silver wondered who would replace the multi-talented quarterback that led Ohio State to a perfect regular season, a No. 1 ranking and a berth in the BCS title game in 2006.
Enter Todd Boeckman.
Through eight games this season, the junior from the same Ohio high school power (St. Henry?s) that produced Penn State All-American Jeff Hartings, has completed 120 of 183 passes for 1,546 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
More importantly, the Buckeyes are again 8-0 the week before Halloween, on top of the Big Ten standings and ranked No. 1 in every major poll and the BCS standings heading into tonight?s game at No. 24 Penn State.
Todd is one of the leaders of this team,? said junior wide receiver Brian Robiskie, who has caught 37 of Boeckman?s passes for 728 yards and seven TD. ?He has really grown and has become a leader of the offense.?

Todd went 19 of 26 against Penn for 253 and 3 Tds The 60 yard pass to Ray Small opened up the passing game and led to a comfortable lead before the late second quarter interception. After the half Boeckman rebounded to lead the team to two more touchdowns and two field goals. His ability to lead the team on 80+ yard drives with consistent passes and QB sneaks for first downs made the difference in the game.

21 TDs on the Season, now 4th best for an OSU QB. 9 TD passes behind Troy Smith (30, 2006).

with 4 games left (bowl game), Todd has a great shot at breaking that record

Did anyone notice we never punted in the whole game? Boeckman and Wells were clutch on 3rd downs.

Lee Corso was saying Boeckman is attracting NFL attention.

Boeckman For Heisman?

If Todd keeps progressing like he has this season and we run the table, I think he has to get some Heisman buzz this year and be among the contenders next year. Against Penn State, on his biggest stage this year, I saw a lot of Leinart-Palmer characteristics. In the 40-plus years I've been following Ohio State football, I've learned you can't judge the team by looking back at what stars they lost from the previous season. You have to look at what the coaches have now because Ohio State has always been great at adjusting and coaching to it's current strengths. No, this offense isn't like last year's and to me not like 2002... it feels more like the USC teams that won two national championships. I wouldn't be suprised if Boeckman is stealing Heisman votes from Beanie next year.

He's also been a lot better throwing the deep ball lately! His size, vision, ability to move in the pocket, and his arm strength is far better than anyone could have imagined. He just needs to keep being steady and realize we don't need him to win the game for us. We just need him to be efficient like he has and it'll be a great next couple years.

I think all the deep throws before Penn were to get him used to throwing them in a real game but against teams that couldnt really hurt us if he made a mistake. Clearly the experience helped for this game. Thats good coaching on Tressel's part and shows to quickness to learn on Boeckman's.

[hypothetical]The Browns pick up Anderson for 1 more year (RFA), and he battles Brady Quinn again for the starting job. The F.O. is partial to Quinn due to his status and contract, the battle is close enough, and he becomes the starter. Anderson leaves via trade, and Cleveland subsequently ends their percieved avoidance of Ohio State stars by drafting QB Todd Boeckman.[/hypothetical]

I'm proud to say I've been on the bandwagon since the YSU game and never hopped off. :)

Tonight, Boeckman had a 6th sense for where everyone was around him in the pocket. He knew precisely when to step up and when to take off up the middle. I couldn't have been more pleased with his poise.

Another positive sign was his intermediate throws. He threw the ball with a lot more zip and didn't hang any receivers out to dry. He also didn't force a deep ball except for that one where Scirrotto slipped.

Congrats to Todd for making cnnsi's cfb front page this morning with the headline:

Star In The Making
In Ohio State's 37-17 pasting of Penn State, SI.com's Stewart Mandel writes America finally got a genuine glimpse at the runaway No. 1 and a leader who reminds some of Mr. Brady.

His progression from game one to last night is amazing......he is growing faster than anyone could have imagined. A couple of his throws last night were into small windows......can't say enough about his play up to this point.

But......unfortunately he will only be judged by most fans for what he does against Michigan.....this morning I like our chances in that game.
