QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Morning Journal

Mr. Consistent

He didn't name Todd Boeckman the official starter until four days before the opener, but Tressel's confidence in his starting quarterback seems to grow every day.

Boeckman graded out in the low 80s against Youngstown State, but not quite the 85 percent needed to earn a ''winning performance,'' as Tressel likes to call it. Still, he was so pleased 225-yard, two touchdown day that he wouldn't commit yesterday to playing backup Robbie Schoenhoft this week against Akron. Of course, given Tressel's history of preparing two quarterbacks early in the year, it's still likely Schoenhoft will get at least one series against the Zips.

''I thought I played well, but I could've been better,'' Boeckman said. ''There were one or two throws in there that easily could have been intercepted. That's the type of stuff we have to work on now.''

I feel better about our QB play now as well. Todd throws a great deep ball and makes the throws he needs to. What stands out the most is he made good decisions though, which is his most vital role for this offense.

Agreed. My moment of truth for Todd came when he delivered the ball perfectly while knowing he was about to get a monster hit...he stood tall and delivered. Then he bounced right up after getting crushed.

Solid first game...especially when the offense was forced into one dimension.

Todd Boeckman, junior quarterback

On the gameplan against Youngstown State last Saturday

"It was part of our plan to come out strong and really try to establish the passing game. They stacked the box with eight or nine guys, which definitely played a part in our strategy. We have some great receivers, so I knew we could come out and be aggressive and really make a statement."

On his satisfaction with his effort

"Being a quarterback, it's always nice to be able to throw the ball around and be productive through the air. There will be games this season where we'll run it more, and we just have to do whatever the team needs."

On approaching opponents

"You definitely have to go out there and play hard and respect what the other team can do or else you?ll get beat. It doesn?t matter if it's Youngstown or Michigan. We have to have the same approach for each game."

Tressel: QB Boeckman 'solid' but can make better choices

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Thursday, September 06, 2007

COLUMBUS ? The Ohio State quarterbacks usually get a visit ? and a dose of bravado ? from coach Jim Tressel during warm-ups for practice as he shows off his soon-to-be 55-year-old arm.
"He's always saying his ball is the best-thrown ball, the best spiral," junior Todd Boeckman said with a laugh. "He says, 'You can't teach touch.' "

Boeckman turns film critic after his first career start

9/5/2007, 8:11 p.m. EDTBy RUSTY MILLER
The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Todd Boeckman started his first game at quarterback at Ohio State, celebrated the win with his family and friends, and then headed for a film festival.
There was no DeNiro or Streep on the screen. This was sure not a romantic comedy, and it definitely wasn't all that suspenseful.
Boeckman spent a long time poring over the video from Saturday's 38-6 victory over Youngstown State. He played, rewound, replayed and rewound each snap to learn more about what went right and to dissect what went wrong.

Nerves hit OSU father, not QB son
Saturday, September 8, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS During a 26-year coaching career, Tim Boeckman has had butterflies. But never stomach bubbles.

Until last Saturday.

That day, Boeckman wasn't a coach. He was a father, the dad of the kid 105,000 Ohio State fans had every eye on and for whom they had every finger crossed.

Todd Boeckman made his first start as the Buckeyes' quarterback last week against Youngstown State. It was as successful a debut as the Boeckmans could have hoped. Todd completed 17-of-23 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns.

"I'm willing to bet my wife and I were more nervous than Todd," Tim Boeckman said. "That's as nervous as I've ever been going into a football game. I coached 26 years, and I never had problems sleeping. Last week, I didn't get a lot of sleep a lot of nights.

"It was a very tough week. This was his opportunity that he's waited four years for, and you wanted him to take the opportunity and run with it."

I continue to be impressed with the accuracy of Todd.

Agreed, He just has to realize that he can't make every single throw a completion. No QB can, those 2 ints were both forcing and hurrying the throw. When he takes his time, TB is deadly.

TB is deadly... sounds like I'm talking about transmitable diseases of the 1890s

I think only one of those was forced. The other was just a miscommunication. He forced some throws, as expected, but his time spent here learning the playbook while waiting his turn has paid off more than I expected. This is way too premature but I think he has a future in the NFL. I get good vibes from him. Tressel hasn't really unleashed him yet. He hasn't even begun to explore the playbook and hasn't let Todd play a full uninterrupted game yet. I believe once he does we'll be more than pleased.

Boeckman, Buckeyes not quite there yet

It certainly wasn't for Ohio State QB Todd Boeckman in the first half of a 20-2 win over Akron on Saturday.

It wasn't just the numbers, as bad as they were (44 yards, two picks). It was the bad decisions and miscommunication that really stood out. He threw one early pass to empty field when freshman receiver Dane Sanzenbacher cut to the middle and Boeckman threw to the sideline. His interception at the end
