QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

You could almost say that Boeckman is a veteran, even though he hasn't played much in college. Look what Booty did last season at USC. Todd has waited for his shot, hopefully he'll have a breakout season, he's earned it.
im feeling very confident with him behind the reigns..

OSU coaches, defense impressed by QB Boeckman

St. Henry grad is 'doing a good job with all the things we're throwing at him,' cornerback says.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman notched two touchdown passes in a closed intrasquad scrimmage at Ohio Stadium on Friday and made a favorable impression on the team's defense.
But the 23-year-old junior-to-be from St. Henry knows that what coach Jim Tressel will remember most is the pass Boeckman completed to the opposition.

It's son's turn, but it's time for dad to worry

COLUMBUS

There were a couple of times Saturday morning when Tim Boeckman almost winced. The former longtime football coach at St. Henry High School was talking with ex-Buckeye Jim Lachey and some reporters.

But when the 6-foot-5, 235-pound quarterback took off on a run, Boeckman disengaged himself from conversation. He watched every move of his son, Todd Boeckman, when he was tackled on the turf inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Mostly he watched to make sure Todd Boeckman got up.

Todd Boeckman is one of three quarterbacks that Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel is auditioning this spring to take over for Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

Boeckman Leads 2 Others in OSU QB Race

By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The waiting is almost over for Todd Boeckman.
All those days spent holding a clipboard while standing on the sideline while somebody else played and got better ? those are in the distant past as Boeckman tries to strengthen his grip on the starting quarterback job at Ohio State.

So what is the probability Boeckman going to start, around 90-95%? I feel good about our depth chart because I actually thought Schoenhoft looked pretty good at the Spring game as well (actually better than Boeckman.) But I admit thats unfair because that was just a snapshot of their skill sets. Thankfully we don't play a team like Texas in our second game of the year so these guys can get their feet wet.

More like 100% barring injury.

I agree. I think he'll be a lot like Krenzel was - very few mistakes, but no flash. He'll make the big plays when needed, and he won't lose the game.

My opinion has always been that Krenzel was not a very good QB in the large scheme of things. He was fortunate to play with a stud RB, a very good OL, and the stoutest defense in the country. Boeckman will be much better than Krenzel, though the attribute of playing "mistake-free" will be vital to his success. It was always clear that McMullen had the better tools of the two QBs, and I look to compare Boeckman to McMullen, but with better leadership, decision-making, and movement abilities.

I came away from the spring game more than a little worried about Boeckman's penchant to throw the ball away when under pressure instead of taking the sack. There were a few plays where he literally just sorta threw it up as he was going down to avoid taking a loss. It was just the spring game, but I hope it wasn't an indication of what he will do in real game situations.

I dont want him throwing it up for grabs, but I like the fact he refuses to be sacked...

Not that it makes much difference, but I don't remember the offensive line being "very good" in 2002. They were better in 2003, and I don't think I'd call that offensive line "very good." But I agree. Krenzel wasn't the quarterback you'd build a team around. He played his role on that team to perfection, and his role was to lead the offense. His role was not to make plays. I think that that will be Boeckman's job: lead a nice, conservative offense down the field, and have faith that the Buckeyes' defense will beat the opponent's offense.

I do not recall that... Ive watched the game like three times and I dont remember him throwing anything "up for grabs"...

I think he has potential to be a very good QB if he gets protection

The few times he's been in games? he's looked under control.
Some passes looked wobbly but got there!
In the Spring Game he wasn't getting much time to set his feet.
But, what choices (at QB)do we really have?
