QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Boeckman in OSU's quarterback spotlight
He's not the starter yet, but he's eager to play

COLUMBUS: He has been in Columbus since the fall of 2004, but it wasn't until Thursday that Todd Boeckman discovered what it's like to be Ohio State's starting quarterback.

In this case, it meant standing for an hour in the muggy east concourse of Ohio Stadium, sweating in full uniform while answering round after round of questions at OSU's media day.

''I guess this was my 'Welcome to Ohio State Day,''' Boeckman said afterward.

The job does not officially belong to the 6-foot-5, 235-pound junior from St. Henry. But he has been grayshirted (starting his freshman academic year late, delaying the start of his four years of eligibility) and redshirted. His every move has been orchestrated to put as much distance as possible between him and 2006 seniors Troy Smith and Justin Zwick.

''It's been three, four, five, 10 years . . . I don't know what, it's been quite a while since I've actually taken a snap, so I'm looking forward to it,'' Boeckman said. ''I'm real excited, and I've learned from some great quarterbacks here.

''I've just got to stay relaxed and focused and keep working hard; the rest will take care of itself.''

OSU QB Boeckman trying to balance caution, daring
Tressel compliments QB after scrimmage, also says he should 'let loose' more.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman is being as cautious with the football as he would with an open container of nuclear waste, but coach Jim Tressel wants the junior from St. Henry to know he doesn't have to play quite so uptight.

Boeckman took another step toward nailing down the starting job by throwing two short touchdown passes with no turnovers in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday. And in a sign that he's winning Tressel's confidence, Boeckman took more than half of the snaps with the first team, while the rest were divvied up between sophomore Rob Schoenhoft and redshirt freshman Antonio Henton.

"Todd Boeckman has moved forward significantly since spring practice," Tressel said. "He has a firm command of what we want to do."

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Boeckman also appears to have the physical gifts to lead the Buckeyes, although Tressel would like to see them displayed a little more often.

"Todd's at that point where he's got plenty of arm strength. Now, he's just got to let it go," Tressel said. "But he knows it's a Catch-22. The most important thing is taking care of the football, but, on the other hand, let loose.

"He's got all the arm strength he could possibly need. I don't want to jinx us, but he's throwing the deep ball as well as anyone since we've been here."

Boeckman seemingly locks up QB job

Columbus- Ohio State's quarterback competition isn't quite over, but junior Todd Boeckman is already the winner.

Coach Jim Tressel said that by the middle of this week his top three quarterbacks no longer will be dividing practice reps equally, as they have been so far and will continue to do Monday and Tuesday. That means a decision looms, and every sign points to Boeckman tightening his grasp on the No. 1 spot.

"If we had a game tomorrow, Todd Boeckman would be the starter," No. 3 quarterback Antonio Henton said, echoing the line Tressel has used since the spring, before adding, "We do have [a game] in two weeks and most likely Todd will be the starter."

"I think Todd Boeckman has moved forward significantly from spring practice as to his command of what we want to do," Tressel said. "I'm not sure you become 'the guy' until you graduate. But I've been very pleased with Todd."

And then Tressel added the kinds of things you say to a starter. He said Boeckman throws the deep ball as well as any quarterback he's coached with Buckeyes. And now he wants the big guy to trust his skills and his knowledge and take the next step.

"Now he has to let it loose," Tressel said. "But he knows what's important - that's the catch-22 - the most important thing is to take care of the football, but on the other hand, let it loose."

Boeckman judged his own performance as "all right," "OK," and "average." But he knows he's headed in the right direction.

"The more reps we get, the more comfortable we'll be," Boeckman said.

Boeckman hoping this season is a home run

COLUMBUS — Todd Boeckman hasn’t started a game at quarterback for Ohio State yet, but some of his teammates still talk about something they saw him do in a tone of voice usually reserved for legendary feats.

A couple of years ago, some of the Buckeyes football players organized what they called The Early Bird Olympics. Part of this was a slow-pitch softball game on the women’s varsity diamond at 6 a.m.

Offensive tackle Kirk Barton, who didn’t have a glove, had himself safely positioned in the outfield when Boeckman came to bat. He was used to seeing quarterbacks throw footballs over his head, but he hadn’t seen anything like Boeckman hitting a softball over his head.

“Todd hit one, like on top of the roof of the Woody Hayes Center,” Barton said. “Oh my gosh, it was a monster shot.”

It would take a minimum blast of close to 350 feet to land a softball on the roof of the Woody Hayes Center at its closest point to the softball diamond.

Boeckman, who hit 18 home runs his senior baseball season at St. Henry, comfirmed Barton’s account.

Good to see Todd take command and start to gain Tressel's confidence. In my opinion this offense needs 1 QB, and not some kind of rotation. Todd has the experience, it sounds like that is really what is separating him during the practices.

Couldn't agree more.

And that QB is Antonio Henton!!!
Nothing that I have seen lends creadence to that. Is there a portion of JT's mind that sends you secret messages? Now mind you, I only care that the deserving ones pilot our team thru the season ahead, but I have seen nothing that would tell me that Henton is number 1.

I haven't seen anything about Henton at all. :)
I don't think right now. On one hand you have Henton who we know is a Troy Smith type, if you will, who according to the reports that I have seen isn't up to speed on the program as much as ,On the other hand, TB who is a 5th year senior who is up to speed and is a pretty capable QB himself.
So in the beginning there was Boeckman And then the others.

you don't have a troy smith type every year. troy had an amazing career and every athletic qb is not troy smith. :oh:
:io:

True on both counts but neither lends to him being the best QB we have either. Now don't get me wrong If Henton is the man I will be just as happy as with TB. I like to see all the Bucks excell.
