QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

This will likely continue for awhile, but could easily have and should've been dealt with this season by getting him real PT. There was just no reason to play Stroud every minute. Both McCord and Brown should've gotten substantial time as a foundation for the upcoming season. It's not like there was any question that Stroud was leaving.
This is unfounded worrying. How much "real" playing time did Fields have? Stroud?

True freshman quarterback Kyle McCord overcame early jitters to throw for 319 yards and two touchdowns, and true freshman TreVeyon Henderson ran for 93 yards and two scores in the first half before being done for the day.

McCord got the nod in place of C.J. Stroud, a freshman who started the first three games but has a sore shoulder and got a breather against the seven-touchdown underdog. McCord was 13 for 18 and got credit for the first touchdown pass of his career when Chris Olave turned a jet sweep toss into a 5-yard score in the first quarter.
Kyle started off shaky but overall had a solid performance as noted above. He has good size at 6'3.5" 222 lbs and he probably has a stronger arm than CJ but not as accurate (who is?). He will tuck it and run when needed, so that is nice. He has a good football mind and has been in Day's system for a couple of years now. In H.S. he had about 7,000 yards passing and 88 td's. Not elite like CJ or Fields but should be solid for us.

It's not a matter of worrying. I'm sure they'll be fine, but why not have them start the year with some experience? It's completely ignoring something you know will happen and not preparing for it. Maybe (clearly?) the vaunted QB development timeline prohibits actual game play.

Thanks for correcting my foolish post. I didn't even think to look at stats. I guess this fed into fans wanting him to start that year even stronger.

Kyle was a 5* recruit that played with Harrison Jr before even hitting Columbus. In his film, he's great at recognizing when to take off and he's a great athlete. The QB job will be an open competition and I like Brown, but I don't think fans have got to see McCord at OSU yet bc he came in and just handed off the ball. I've bitched about that enough and won't do it now, but point is we just haven't seen what McCord can do here yet.

I think he can be incredible here and he has my respect in droves by not transferring. He seems like a good leader. He has the arm talent to be good (not quite CJ though) and also the athleticism to move the chains at bare minimum (better than CJ). All things considered, I would be really excited to have McCord as the starter...not saying he'll be CJ, but he has the chance to be a great one here. That diatribe comes at the behest of many of my Buckeye friends doubting him when he's barely had a chance to throw a pass, he's a question mark at the college level but damn give him a chance.

It baffles me that fans have seen next to nothing from McCord, and even less from Brown, but yet so many are predicting Brown to win the job. The only thing any of us can go by is their HS film, and both looked talented. Brown runs more, but McCord wouldn't be confused with being a Manning. I'm excited for the QB battle, but I wouldn't feel right giving a prediction based on next to nothing

I'm predicting that McCord will win the job and be QB1 in 2023. He's done well in the 2021 & 2022 Spring games; I expect a solid performance in the 2023 Spring game too. If Brown does beat him out; he'd almost have be in the Haskins/Fields/Stroud ability/stats/consistency level.

Totally fair. I lean towards Brown because of that mobility and the fact that we'll probably need it due to our 2 OT's leaving. But obviously a lot more will go into the decision than just that.

It doesn't help that the only real PT for Kyle (Akron) was uninspiring. The final numbers were decent, but they were heavily built off two massive YAC throws (Garrett Wilson and Egbuka) and his ball placement was erratic to say the least. Granted it was his first career start and he was a true frosh so I'm definitely not writing him off. Just didn't leave a positive last impression in my mind

Can you point me the film that shows him “taking off” and “a great athlete”.

Not disputing it but I haven’t seen the film nor can I recall anything in his 2 years here that would lead to the conclusion.

I know I’ve seen footage of Brown and his ability to use his legs.

There’s a little bit in his HS highlights of him running. But he’s mainly known for his, and ability to throw on the run and move well in the pocket.

Kyle's high school video shows plenty of mobility to manuever the pocket. He's not as dangerous running the ball as the other options but he can move enough to keep things alive or pick up a first down when we need (maybe slightly less athletic version of CJ).

Personally I think we need one of the rich boosters to give CJ 20 mil to come back next year lol

I think he's going to have some steep competition from Devin, but that said....

Either QB will have their odds of success greatly improved by having a healthy Henderson and Pryor available. There should be so many slip screens for major yardage between those two. I think people forget when Tre was healthy and how much of a weapon he was, and I really like Pryor's potential as well. With the talent expected at every spot, having a QB that can get the ball out quickly and limit turnovers while improving as the season progresses is all we can ask for.

I don’t think we need the second coming of Fields legs at QB. What CJ showed against UGA is what I think Day’s system needs.

I think both QBs offer that

He will.
And all of the weapons line up great for whomever wins the job
