QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

Stetson Bennett, Mac Jones, AJ McCarron, and Cardale Jones won championships fairly recently. A great QB gives any team a huge advantage but it's far from a necessity. And Ryan Day can get the best out of whoever he tabs the starter. If he's comfortable rolling with McCord and Brown I don't see any reason for us to doubt him... yet.

Yep, but all of those guys played on teams with very good to great defenses. Our defense looked to be improving much of this season before getting shredded the last two games. Hopefully, the strides we showed over the first couple of months can start translating to the bigger games next season, otherwise McCord/Brown are going to have very little margin for error.

If McCord/Brown are Mac Jones i'd be great with that. I don't think he belongs on that list. You can say he's not the greatest but he did put up bonkers stats his last year at Bama and got drafted in the 1st round. He's not that Ken Dorsey type that Stetson Bennett is.

If the OL play is there, we can absolutely get by with a good game manger type because the skill positions should be among the best in CFB

Yep OL play is absolutely the key. There are zero questions about the skill positions, especially if we can happen to have a mostly fully healthy RB group next year. A strong OL and whoever the QB is could be somewhat average compared to Stroud/Fields but still look good because of all around him. If the OL is shaky McCord/Brown need to be way more tip top.

If the OL is shaky, the more mobile QB will have to be the starter, as opposed to the one who is only slightly mobile when necessary

None of those guys had the offensive weapons we can provide except Mac Jones. And even he didn't have the coaching and offensive attack that Day provides. My point was more that our defense needs improved way more than our QB prospects. If that can happen, I'm confident either of our guys (or a transfer of Day's choosing) can be what's needed to keep on pace for another run.

Edit: I should have added Cardale with Mac, there were plenty of weapons on that team but he also had to overcome being the 3rd stringer coming on late in the season.

I can see that point of view, I just don't agree with it. He was surrounded by the best offensive units in the country and was about as basic as a QB could be. He executed well but was far from a playmaking catalyst for their success.

HEISMAN TIME, BABY. As I scoured the internet for Ohio State football content for today's Skull Session, I had several news articles regarding quarterback Kyle McCord continue to pop up in my searches.

FANDUEL 2023 HEISMAN ODDS
PLAYER TEAM POSITION ODDS
CALEB WILLIAMS USC QB +400
DRAKE MAYE UNC QB +1000
MICHAEL PENIX JR. UW QB +1200
BO NIX ORE QB +1200
JORDAN TRAVIS FSU QB +1200
QUINN EWERS UT QB +1800
SAM HARTMAN ND QB +1800
DREW ALLAR PSU QB +2000
KYLE MCCORD OSU QB +2000

As it stands in January, over seven months until the 2023 college football season will kick off in late August, McCord has the best odds of any Ohio State player to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy at +2000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

OK, he's not a QB; but I would have thought that Marvin Harrison would be the Ohio State player with the best odds to win the Heisman at this point in time. McCord hasn't even been designated QB1 yet.

These college football players will replace top stars who departed early for the 2023 NFL Draft

Ohio State QB CJ Stroud
Replacement -- Kyle McCord: A two-year backup to Stroud, McCord has been developing in Ryan Day's offense with the hopes that this opportunity would present itself in the near future. A five-star prospect coming out of high school, McCord enrolled early in 2021 but has seen action in just 12 games with one career start across the last two seasons. Now it's time for McCord to take the reins and deliver on that five-star projection, helming an offense that still boasts one of the best wide receiver rooms in the country with Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka heading into their third year of college ball.

Agree with the above. The OL[ will determine how well the offense becomes this year. OK, maybe McCord won't be the very accurate passer CJ was, but if he can do enough to move the sticks and score in the red zone, he will be very serviceable. It mayhap that Devin Brown can do it better, and if that's the case, then he will be at the controls. I believe the passing will get better with the reps, but if the OL can't pass pro, tOSU is toast. Same if the OL can't get a push for the RBs, even if the QB is spot on with his throws. We'll see how good a coach Frye is. tOSU didn't bring in any 5* automatic stud this year or last, so we'll have to wait, see and hold our collective breaths. Will the Buckeyes be good. Certainly. Will they be world beaters (OK, Xichigan beaters), remains to be seen. Never forget, our OL has to go against our DL, and that has to count for something. Go Bucks!

The OL is the only question mark on the team now IMO. We haven't had a bad QB since Coach Day has been here and we have two top flight 5 stars looking to be starter. I also feel great about our Secondary now too with the portal additions.

So like you said it's on the OL now. I think this is going to be a good offensive line (with that's returning how can it not?) but the real question is can we go from good to great? We dont need to be Moore award winners with the offensive skill we have but they've got to be able to hold their own vs the Penn States and Michigan's of the college football world (especially vs a team like Georgia or Alabama if we were to get in the playoffs).
