QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

ON KYLE MCCORD, DEVIN BROWN
  • “Kyle has really progressed. I think he’s learning from C.J.”
  • Hartline said McCord and Brown have had the mindset of learning from Stroud as much as possible this season. He added that those quarterbacks have learned that they don’t have the same play style as Stroud, and that’s OK, but there are still things to pick up on.

That's the beauty with the OSU QB recent lineage. Most don't have the same play style but they learn aspects of the game from one another that makes them successful when they take over. Stroud is nothing like Fields, who was nothing like Haskins, who was nothing like Jones or Barrett who was nothing like Braxton, etc etc. And all had success and led us to where the program is currently at.

And none of them are like Herbstreit.

Not to argue with you because you have an interesting point, but were Haskins and Fields ever on the same team together? I thought that Fields transferred in after Haskins went pro?

Good question: In 2018, Haskins had 533 pass attempts, Tate Martell had 28. No one else attempted a pass for the Buckeyes.

In 2019, Haskins was in Washington and Justin Fields had the most pass attempts for the Buckeyes (and he definitely did not sit after transferring).

My fault, my comparison was a flawed one in this scenario. Take out Haskins to Fields. But I hope you understand my point. OSU has a varied type of QBs over the years, and each has helped one another to continue the QB success.

I do understand your point. It's an interesting concept. I don't think I'll argue for or against it - I really don't know if each is helping the next one out or not. But... I do know that each time OSU gets a new quarterback, I say, "We're screwed - that guy was awesome." And for the last 10+ years I've been wrong.

Smith to Boeckman - probably a drop in talent but we did win the Big Ten and go to the national championship game.
Boeckman to Pryor - doesn't really fit in, because Pryor just came in and grabbed his spot.
Pryor to Bauserman - ha - probably the only time I was right in this game.
Bauserman to Miller - easy choice to give Miller the ball.
Miller to Barrett - Miller was the faster guy, but Barrett could run the read option better than anyone I can think of. Maybe a drop in talent, but maybe not. Definitely not a "we're screwed" drop.
Barrett to Jones - Let's put it this way: when Barrett came out of the game against *ichigan, I thought, "Hold *ichigan to just one more touchdown, and maybe win this in overtime." I gave Jones no credit. Of course, Ohio State's scores from that point on were a long run by Zeke and a fumble returned for a touchdown. So I still gave Jones no credit. When Ohio State scored first against Wisconsin, my first thought was, "At least we didn't get shut out."
Barrett to Haskins - No way Haskins can work in this offense, right? Right? (crickets)
Haskins to Fields - Well, eventually there has to be a drop off in talent, right? Right? (crickets)
Fields to Stroud - Alright, I give up trying to guess how the next guy is going to do for us. Shut up and watch the game.

The biggest "what if" will always be if Pryor stayed for his last year, could mentor Braxton for his frosh year, and then hand over the reigns. But that then opens too many other scenarios as well

Every single guy in that list won the B1G QB of the Year award at least once

I still say that Alabama owes Pryor for 2 of their championships:

2011 - Put Pryor on that team. Very good chance Ohio State goes to the championship game. 1 loss at most, and they would have put Ohio State up against LSU, instead of Alabama. Ohio State lost to Miami something like 20-6. Pryor easily wins that game. Then they lost to (in no particular order, because I forget): Nebraska (try to convince me that Pryor can't hold onto that lead - just try it), Purdue (the game went into overtime without Pryor), Michigan State (Pryor easily scores more than 10 points), Penn State (I think it was a 6-point game or something - Pryor wins that), and *ichigan (6-point game - I think Pryor wins it). Then it would have been a rematch with Michigan State, probably, in Indianapolis. So... yeah, Alabama shouldn't have been in that game.
2012 - Pryor would have been gone, but Ohio State wouldn't have lost their 2012 post-season (in my scenario). Undefeated Ohio State, I believe, should be in over 1-loss Alabama against an undefeated Notre Dame team.
