Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Two Bucks made it to the finals tomorrow

149
#1 Sasso vs #6 Blockhus (Minny)
Blockhus upset Gomez in the first round and continued on

184
#1 Brooks (PSU) vs #2 Romero
Interested to see how close Romero can keep it

At 133, #6 Nagao made it to the finals
Glad to see Amine lost

A pretty chalk bracket overall

The Mendez match was pretty frustrating really, no way he should have lost that with the start he had and a little disappointed with the coaching there. Sasso hopefully wins and he looks to be at his peak right now in every phase. Romero has wrestled really well, but odds of beating Brooks are pretty slim. Either way B1G finals are always a blast to watch if you are a fan of wrestling in general.

In the most recent news:
125: Gonzo went 2 and out, so we'll have nobody there at NCAA's
133: See above, extremely disappointing to not have Mendez in the finals.
141: D'Emilio strung together two wins in consolations and will place no lower than 6th, great showing and he has a winnable match to get him to 3/4 place match. Very good tourney for him.
149: Sasso wrestling for the title.
157: Gallagher goes two and out, awful showing for him. Unless there is an injury, there is an issue here...super inconsistent.
165: Kharchla got destroyed by Hamiti, not a good match for him to say the least. No lower than 6th but I think Kharchla is injured pretty badly, not sure if he ends up on the podium.
174: Ethan lost another close one to Labriola, not sure he is ever going to beat that dude though he is capable of it. No lower than 6th but I would say 3rd or 4th is the lowest he takes.
184: Romero in finals, he has looked great. Road probably ends at Brooks, might be a close match but I don't see anyone beating Brooks this year absent an injury or a fluke.
197: Looks like Hoffman took a medical forfeit and only had one win...could be another weight with nobody at NCAA's, he might have a spot allotted but seems pretty clear he is still injured or just not with it. Damn shame.
HWT: Tater won two in consolations and will take no lower than 6th...likely falls to Hillger in his next match, but good tourney from him all things considered.

We'll see how we round out this tourney and wrestle in the NCAA's, but I will say I am not thrilled with the progress of many of our wrestlers under this staff. I'm not going to go into every previous year, but look at this roster in terms of recruiting rankings (which in wrestling tend to be damn accurate) versus results from top to bottom. Malik was #1 nationally at his weight in HS, not once did he get on the podium (this year he got injured, but even healthy it was not going to happen). Mendez was the #1 overall recruit and I get he is a true frosh, but true frosh guys at PSU with that talent are not losing the matches he is. D'Emilio is fine and about on par with his ranking. Sasso was #1 nationally in HS, zero titles though he has overall been very good. Gallagher was #1 nationally at his weight in HS and shows talent, yet barely has a winning record. Kharchla was #1 at his weight in HS and never on the podium and even lost his wrestle off before the season. Smith has exceeded expectations without a doubt, no qualms there. Romero has had some injuries but even still, another guy ranked #1 that never got close to a title. Hoffman was #1 at his weight in HS and got that one AA by the grace of god, but came nowhere near his ranking while others in his recruiting class did. And that take doesn't even take into account the Decaturs (both #1 at their weight and did nothing here), Echemendia, Singletary from Blair and I know that is not the whole list.

Point is that the staff better get these highly rated recruits up on the podium higher...maybe it is unrealistic to expect PSU-level results as long as Sanderson is there, so I am not saying I expect that. BUT we are so far off the mark of actual results when our recruiting classes have been pretty similar overall. Yes you had RBY, Brooks, Starocci (list goes on) come in at the top of their classes, but so have we and we don't get close to the same results, to the point I am wondering if guys like RBY, Brooks, Starocci, etc. would be doing so well in Columbus. I would even throw out Haines as a guy from PSU to mention, certainly a good HS wrestler but nowhere near the accolades of Gallagher and can run circles around him right now. I don't think there is a better alternative out there than Ryan, but we need to take a look at how we are developing wrestlers and also at our assistants. I knew we weren't a top 3 school this year, but we have serious talent on the roster next year that we cannot squander...plus I think the recruiting run we have been on will dry up if top recruits are noticing the same thing.

I am also concerned about our coaching at the lower weights...results have been abysmal there lately and we love Logan Stieber for what he did at OSU as a wrestler, but is he a good coach? MH has underperformed by a lot and now it looks like Gonzales won't be the answer at 125, the Decaturs never developed into anything, D'Emilio did about what would be expected, Sasso you thought may be a multiple national title winner...the results in the lower weights have to get much better, plain and simple. And on Pletcher or McKenna, that had nothing to do with Logie except he did help Pletcher in the covid year where he could have won it and probably would have, but with or without Logie. Could be guys that just didn't pan out, put in the work or got injured, but the amount of shortcomings is getting to the point where I am more inclined to say it is not every single wrestlers fault.

Sorry for the rant, excited to watch some great wrestling today!

Watching on record, but good job Sasso on just finding a way to win...that said, please stop giving up an automatic takedown to literally anyone you wrestle in the 1st. That's his Achilles heel by a mile imo.

Not OSU specific, but that Hamiti kid at 165 for Wisconsin I really like. Super aggressive and aware for how young he is. Sky is the limit there.

Indulge me please and cut to the chase for me. Any chance for a national championship, and if not, how will we finish?

No chance at all this year. Next year very possible, but far from a given. We took 4th at B1G right behind Nebraska and probably did the best we could with our current lineup, so I would expect no better than somewhere between 5-8 for the team, with 3 being the absolute cap (PSU and Iowa are both way ahead of us this year).

All that said, we had a great comeback spurt yesterday at some weights. Mendez is disappointing in losing every match yesterday...went from should have been in the finals against RBY to 6th. D'Emilio rallied to take 4th. Kharchla and Smith came back to take 3rd. Tate beat Hillger 7-4 somehow and took 4th. That helps with seeds and getting a shot at NCAA's to make some individual runs, could have been a lot worse.

Predictions are as follows: Mendez fails to AA (he has the talent but looked awful this weekend), D'Emilio wins 2-3 matches but no AA, Sasso takes runner up to Yianni, Kharchla takes somewhere between 6-8 and gets on the podium, Smith takes 3 or 4 (Starocci and Labriola he cannot seem to beat), Romero takes 3-4, Hoffman I think is out, and Tater is the biggest unknown but I will go with one match away from AA, though he could very well AA (never know with that dude in March.

It is official... both Hoffman and Gallagher are in!

At large bids eh? Hoffman makes sense since he was AA before and I am pretty sure hurt (to the point where I almost doubt he wrestles in NCAA's). Gallagher I am honestly surprised on...no track record at NCAA's and really no notable wins this year that I can recall. But I will take it, the more we have in the better, you never know what can happen when they hit the mat.

SASSO WINS BIG TEN TITLE, BUCKEYES FOURTH OVERALL

Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso earned his second Big Ten Championship Sunday with a win over Michael Blockhus of Minnesota in the title bout at 149-pounds. As a team, the Buckeyes finished fourth overall and Sasso was named to the 2023 All-Big Ten squad.

Sasso took Blockhus to overtime to win by decision, 7-5, in sudden victory. Sasso was making his fourth appearance in the championships match. He also won the weight class in 2021.

Senior Kaleb Romero also battled for a title Sunday but fell in the 184-pound title bout to Aaron Brooks of Penn State.

Ohio State earned third-place finishes from Carson Kharchla (165) and Ethan Smith (174). Dylan D’Emilio (141) and Tate Orndorff (HWT) claimed fourth.

Freshman Jesse Mendez (133) finished his first Big Ten Championship tournament in sixth place. He fell to Michigan’s Dylan Ragusin in the fifth-place match.

Ohio State will send nine Buckeyes to the 2023 NCAA Championships. Seven as a result of their individual performances at the 2023 Big Ten Championships and two more as at-large selections

Qualifiers Jesse Mendez (133), Dylan D’Emilio (141), Sammy Sasso (149), Carson Kharchla (165), Ethan Smith (174), Kaleb Romero (184) and Tate Orndorff (HWT) along with at-large selections Paddy Gallagher (157) and Gavin Hoffman (197) all head to the Bok Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, March 16-18 for the 2023 NCAA Championships.

In the Pa. state finals Kilkeary won 8-5 and Welsh dominated 9-2. Rocco Welsh moves on to face PSU commit Josh Barr
next Saturday at the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic. The two have a good rivalry brewing as Barr defeated Welsh at Junior Nationals
last July and Rocco got his revenge at FLO's Who's #1 in September. Flo has Welsh rated #9 in their pound for pound rating
system and Barr is # 10.Let's hope these two continue their rivalry in the future when OSU and PSU meet.

2023 brackets are set (they were but I am late) and here we go:

125: Nobody for OSU.
133: Mendez at #14. Honestly pretty fair with how he finished and ended up with a pretty decent draw in the first match...but Arujao in the second match is probably game over in the championships anyways.
141: D'Emilio at #17, winnable first match but then #1 Woods if he gets there...so like Mendez, probably a 1 win max in championships and hopefully fights back in consolations.
149: Sasso at #2, not a surprise with Yianni at #1...hope he gets a chance to get to finals to challenge Yianni. Probably won't get a challenge until quarters or semis, but Sasso can look suspect to underdogs so not really counting on Sammy being in the finals, though praying for it it because he is our only chance of a guy being in the finals imo.
157: Paddy at #28, but faces an undefeated Lehigh wrestler out of the gate. Who knows with Paddy though, he could go on a run with his talent if he is healthy and has his mind right.
165: Kharchla at #10, first one that I feel is unfair but whatever, you have to wrestle everyone right? But problem is he drew Connor Brady out of the gate, who he was drill partners with in HS. Brady is good regardless but the familiarity has me nervous, you always hate wrestling your own drill partner because they know tendencies. But if he does win that one, I see Carson out to quarters against O'Toole most likely, then probably out of the championships...I don't think Carson is healthy right now but hope he can get on the podium.
174: Ethan Smith at #6 and that is probably fair. I think he has a great shot at making quarters and then likely faces Mekhi, which is not ideal but cross that bridge if he gets there.
184: Romero at #6, feel that is too low and worst part is somehow Brooks is #3 and if Romero gets to quarters then that is it. Brooks is going to win the Tourney and somehow he is the #3 seed? The selection committee royally screwed the pooch at this weight. So Romero is quarter finals at best and then hopefully can hit the podium in consolations.
197: Hoffman at #26, kind of get that with his season but drew a very tough Tanner Sloan for the first match. Hopefully he can get another magical run in him.
Hwt: Orndorff at #16 and who really knows with him on where he should be ranked...he is 15-7 this year but was also AA previously, so hopefully he knocks out the first but then he will get handled by Parris in the next round if he wins.

I see us at the very peak being top 5 this year, likely more in the 6-10 range. Not being negative, just realistic. Cool thing about wrestling is that you can have great individual performances even in a year where the team is not going to win it all. Get as many kids on the podium as possible.

RBO7OSU posted : " Mendez at #14.#

Actually it just came out that Mendez moved up to #13 because 11th seed McGonigal (Lehigh) sustained a recent injury
that has sidelined him from Nationals. Tough break, but for Mendez it means his 2nd round opponent would now be McGhee
instead of Arujao.

That is a fortunate twist of events for Mendez, thanks for the info. May not beat McGhee either but way better shot than Arujao.
