Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

Sasso, Kharchla, and Romero moving onto the QF's tomorrow

Add Mendez and Smith, and that's a good showing... so a little disappointed on the results today overall. Seems there was a couple triumphs in the first round, but we might not even be top 10 at this rate. But hope everyone alive in the championships can make some more noise.

It's always hard to keep up with the first day but a lot of big upsets, I think there is a #27, 28, and 29 seed that advanced to the QFs in different brackets, including Caleb Fish from MSU. Cool to see.

Updated brackets going into today

Sasso gets #7 Yahya Thomas from NW
Kharchla gets #2 O'Toole from Mizzou, that'll be tough
Romero gets #3 Brooks from PSU, which is just cruel and unusual

Sasso seems comfortable wrestling Thomas, I like his odds to advance. Kharchla has a brutal matchup and I don't see a win there, but hopefully he can pull the upset off. Romero like you said and I said above about Brooks being seeded #3...that just sucks, Brooks is going to win that weight and Romero has to face him already. Side note - why is the UNI kid #1 above Brooks and Hidlay? I might be missing something but that seems absurd.

In the consolations, hopefully guys can fight back. In recent years that is where we earned a higher placing...not ideal obviously, but this year is trying to get as many guys on the podium as possible. Even back at Graham where we put out the likes of David Taylor, for most the goal was to AA because it is fricking hard. It is no different even at OSU, if you go down as an AA it is a huge accomplishment, so hopefully he have guys fight back to earn that status.

Mendez takes down the Michigan wrestler and advances in consos again, awesome to see
D'Emilio continues that tradition of beating Michigan wrestlers and also advances in consos
Paddy loses a tight one, 3-2
Smith beats the NW wrestler and advances in consos
Tate holds on and also advances in consos

4-1 for the good guys in Session 3 (whoops, guess it's still session 3), almost a perfect 5-0
Today shaping up to be a good day

Lee was up 5-4 and tried for a takedown at the edge of the mat with about 1 minute left in the 3rd. His foot was off the mat and outside the circle before he extended it back to touch the line; the refs were in perfect position and correctly called it out of bounds and the Iowa coaches tossed the brick in. Watching the replay, everybody agreed that it was not a takedown, except for the ref in the video booth, who reversed the decision and made it 7-4, Lee. Reminded me of a ref in Birmingham - yeah, too soon.

The over 2-minute delay seemed to refresh Ramos, who got an escape and then a takedown to tie the match with about 20 seconds left. Then he got himself around both of Lee’s arms and turned him onto his back, getting what would have been 4 points - but they were never awarded cause he improved his position with a few seconds to go and got the fall with 1 second left with the score officially still 7-7, but he had it won without the pin.

Reminiscent of Dan Gable’s loss to Larry Owings in 1970, but that was in the final.
